Brissett for me. I've been on record here, I have serious doubts Cam even has the desire to play beyond the end of his contract next year.If the rest of the season didn't matter to you - who's the better dynasty QB, Newton or Brissett?
Then why would he have foot surgery?Brissett for me. I've been on record here, I have serious doubts Cam even has the desire to play beyond the end of his contract next year.
I doubt this is the type of injury where he couldn’t walk normally. Pain yes but my guess is it’s probably something he would just live with it if he wasn’t a professional athlete. Big difference between walking and playing in the NFL. He had been able to rehab the injury. That wouldn’t be possible if he wasn’t able to walk normally I don’t think. To walk normally again?
Apparently rehab wasn't working. Personally I think he's coming back to play, and how well he does at playing will dictate how long he continues to do it. I don't think this recent news of a surgery makes his decision to come back any more or less likely, though. He tried to rehab, that didn't work, so now he's trying a more aggressive form of treatment (surgery). I've had two foot surgeries myself, though neither were a Lisfranc.I doubt this is the type of injury where he couldn’t walk normally. I think he still wants to give it his best shot for next year. And he'd probably get it straightened out at some point down the road anyways as a quality of life thing, so may as well do it now while preparing for next year. Then why would he have foot surgery?
They are not going to out right release him. Thats just sillyCam Newton on Panthers’ Firing of Ron Rivera: ‘This One Hurt Deep’
I could be wrong, but this feels like the Panthers are preparing to rip the bandaid off in their efforts to move the franchise in a new direction.
Step 1 - fire Ron Rivera
Step 2 - trade or release Cam Newton during the off-season
If you were 30, and had pain in your foot that could be eliminated with surgery, you would opt to live with the pain for the next 40 years instead?Gandalf said:I doubt this is the type of injury where he couldn’t walk normally. And the surgery cost you nothing, and your job at the moment literally is to do nothing but rehab it.If you were 30, and had pain in your foot that could be eliminated with surgery, you would opt to live with the pain for the next 40 years instead?
Maybe? I guess it would depend on how bad the pain was. But if I was a professional athlete I would absolutely have surgery to fix it and make a full recovery. If you were 30, and had pain in your foot that could be eliminated with surgery, you would opt to live with the pain for the next 40 years instead?

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms the Panthers will attempt to trade Cam Newton this offseason.
The Panthers expect plenty in return for Cam and are open to holding onto him if interested teams aren't able to match their asking price. Newton, who is due a reasonable (at least relative to other QBs) $18.6 million salary in 2020, is the best trade chip Carolina has at the moment. Moving on from a franchise icon is never an easy call, though Carolina's new ownership may feel it's what's best for the organization as the Panthers embark on what figures to be a lengthy rebuild. The former MVP is slated for foot surgery this week but should be up and running again by March.

I haven’t seen much from this source that has been accurate. Wouldn’t expect a lengthy rebuild under Tepper. Wouldn’t say a team with these pieces would fall into the rebuild categoryRapoopoort spam
Journeyman?Cam-to-the-Chargers would be a terrible idea. You don't replace a franchise icon with a journeyman veteran.
Rivers is 38 and no longer good. Cam is 30 and a huge injury risk but possibly capable of being a top-5 quarterback. Any team weak at quarterback should be intrigued by Newton. Rivers should retire. His low level of play will only get lower.Cam-to-the-Chargers would be a terrible idea. You don't replace a franchise icon with a journeyman veteran.
I was thinking about this too. Anything that he was doing to accentuate McCaffrey's style of play, check downs screens etc (whether it's due to a dead shoulder or not) could be done just as effectively with Ekeler, maybe slightly more so.Rivers is 38 and no longer good. Journeyman?
Or quicker than you can say Rivers?Football players can go from "Future Hall Of Famer" to "journeyman" quicker than you can say "Lis franc".
The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue and Joseph Person gave 50% and 15% odds that Cam Newton has played his last snap for the Panthers.
The fact that they are split on how likely the new Panthers coaching staff is to move on from Newton goes to show how wide open this offseason is. The Panthers reportedly want to see Newton (Lisfranc) work out on the field in March before weighing their options. They could let Newton play out the final year of his contract or look to trade him. By trading him or releasing him, the Panthers would save $19.1 million in cap space.

Top 5 QB is where I think most of the disagreement in here and in the league is. I personally don't see him ever being a top 5 QB. Not talking about FFL here....Rivers is 38 and no longer good. "Possibly capable" - maybe. But no, he's not among the truly elite. Mahomes, Russell, Rodgers, Wentz, Lamar... He's probably top half if healthy. Not better than Dak, Jimmy G, Goff, Stafford, etcTop 5 QB is where I think most of the disagreement in here and in the league is. I personally don't see him ever being a top 5 QB. Speaking to the Associated Press, Panthers GM Marty Hurney "refused to answer several" questions about Cam Newton’s future with the team.
"He’s rehabbing, that’s all I can say," was as far as Hurney was willing to go on Newton's health. He then refused to address Newton's Super Bowl week assertion that he would "absolutely" be back in Carolina in 2020. Newton also said he had an "unbelievable conversation" with Hurney, coach Matt Rhule and new owner David Tepper. General managers aren't known for their expansiveness, but Hurney's complete refusal to comment is certainly noteworthy. With the new league year approaching, we will likely know Newton's Carolina future by this time next month.

Kuechly retired. Now they need CMC to take the year off... Then maybe.pantherclub said:He gone. Right or wrong he gone.
Tanking for Trevor engaged
They won 5 games with his record setting year. They are losing basically their entire d line and half their secondary. This is going to be a historically bad defense and in turn team. They can delay all they want. Everyone knows Watson and Mahomes are studs and Mitch is not good. They screwed up.I think Cam would be a good fit in Chicago although I am sure the brass there will want to delay hanging themselves by ignoring the fact that Trubisky is not the answer.
So true. And how I feel as a Redskins fan when we drafted Doctson over Michael ThomasThey can delay all they want. Everyone knows Watson and Mahomes are studs and Mitch is not good. They screwed up.
Speaking Tuesday, Panthers owner David Tepper said Cam Newton's future with the team will depend on his health.
"There’s a lot of different things that can happen, but first is, is he healthy?," Tepper said. "Tell me that and then we can talk." It's a cop-out answer, as the Panthers aren't going to have a definitive answer by the time free agency starts. The Panthers' dissembling since Newton's Super Bowl week assertion that he would be back seems to suggest a team that is ready to move on, but the truth remains elusive.

The Athletics' Jourdan Rodrigue reports the Panthers believe QB Cam Newton is likely to pass a physical and be cleared for football activities in March.
Rodrigue added that the Panthers are still likely to exercise precaution through spring workouts if Newton remains with the team. It's been awhile since we've seen Newton at full health. His 2018 season was cut short by a bum shoulder that limited his arm strength, while he played just two games in 2019 due to persistent foot problems. There have been few players in the history of the league that offer Newton's elite dual-threat ability, but his inability to stay healthy in recent years is problematic when predicting how the soon to be 31-year-old QB will perform later in his career.
