QB Cam Newton, Retired (2 Viewers)

Cam Newton described the lingering pain in his ankle as a "thump" when he moves on it incorrectly.

It's entirely possible Newton's surgically repaired ankle will be forgotten once the games start. It's also possible that these are legitimate red flags. "It’s like a thump from your mom when you said something that you weren’t supposed to," described Cam. "She’ll thump you dead in your ear or on your head. It’ll hurt for that little second but it’ll go away after 2-3 minutes. It’s a reminder that, hey, you better check yourself." Newton's ADP -- currently in the late-seventh round -- has fallen enough that we believe he's well worth the perceived risk. Cam drafters may want to secure a QB2 a bit earlier than usual, however.

Right the injury he has played on since college and while setting rushing records in the NFL is now going to stop him from playing. And if they had bothered to go with the entire quote he mentioned it happens occasionally it is not a constant. He also says he finally doesn't have to limp but he has been doing it so long he has to learn to walk and run without a limp over again. So personally I am not very worried about "red flags".

Speaking after Thursday's limited practice, Cam Newton (ribs) hinted he may not play Sunday.

"I am human," Newton said. "I don't want to put this team in jeopardy (if I'm not ready)." Newton said it's hard to make "sudden moves," and that it's "sometimes" manageable to throw. He did add that he's "on pace" to play, but the quotes speak to real doubt about his Sunday status, doubt that wasn't evident before Thursday. Newton, who has never missed a game, should no longer be considered guaranteed to suit up against the Bucs, and fantasy owners must come up with contingency plans. Derek Anderson will get the call if Newton can't go.

Speaking after Thursday's practice, Panthers coach Ron Rivera admitted Cam Newton (ribs) will likely be a game-time decision for Sunday's opener against the Bucs.

For what it's worth, Rivera agreed with Newton's assessment that he's "on pace" to play, but it doesn't sound like we're going to gain clarity before Sunday. That's bad news, as the Bucs and Panthers don't kick off until 4:25 ET, meaning some fantasy owners could be forced to set their lineup without knowing their QB1's status. Newton owners coming into the season without a backup quarterback need to make a move some time in the next 72 hours. Derek Anderson is the Panthers' No. 2.

Cam fully participated in practice today taking every rep. I am telling you they are just trolling the Bucs. I will be absolutely stunned if anyone but Cam is behind center at the start of this game.

I think he's going to start, but I'm worried about how effective he'll be. All reports are he's really struggling. But he is the kind of stud who brings it magically on game day...so I'm really on the fence about starting him week one. My other options aren't too great though (Palmer and Shaun Hill).

*sigh*

Getting nervous with a little over 12 hours to go. In my dynasty it's either him or...Shaun Hill. Really don't wanna risk taking a goose egg at my QB spot if he doesn't play. Actually starting to think Hill's the better (safer) option.

That doesn't sound particularly good.

The ankles not even an issue now, right? It's just the rib.

Roto saying coach may sit him for precautionary reasons and have him healthy rest of season. I may have to roll with Geno to avoid risk of goose egg..... Cam is game time decision but I have to decide by noon game.

Coach Ron Rivera admits Cam Newton is dealing with "constant nagging soreness" in both his ankle and ribs, and he'll do so for the remainder of the season.

Newton's current routine is to get treatment every Monday and Tuesday in an effort to get everything calmed down before practice on Wednesday. It's a reminder that Newton is still banged up, and will be until February. He rushed just four times in his Week 2 debut and was sacked five times. Expect Carolina to lean more on Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tobert near the goal line.

Well I was wrong on opening day. Still surprised. But Riverboat got it right and that was a gamble. And pretty much every player is sore until Feb.

What's the feeling going forward with Cam? Is he going to return to his old form? Another owner is trying to trade him to me and I just don't know what to expect from him.

Cam is such a physical beast..but torn here. may go Cousins to be safe, but i could see Cam having a nice day despite the injury

As an RG3 owner, I, too, have an offer on the table for Cam. I didn't see the game last week but he supposedly looked pretty good and not really limited. Can anyone confirm?

He looked good. I didn't see any hesitation from him when deciding to take off. I don't recall any designed run plays for him though, but I could have missed those plays. Could of had a bigger day passing but some of his WRs dropped some passes

The dropped passes and his mediocre receivers is what makes me hesitant to pull the trigger on the deal for him.

The new receivers have dropped less passes at this point then the group last year had. His receiving corps over all is better this season than last. Right now Cam is getting his timing down with the new guys.

He had one option where he decided to keep it and one scramble I think.

Ok, So without this sounding like an assistant coach forum question. Would you trade tannehill and welker for Cam in a ppr start 2 wr league. Other qb is romo. other wrs Julio, Cruz, Hawkins, Gordon

Well played. I knew it was a bad idea to post it but I couldn't help myself.

Why is it not sounding like what you meant it to be?

I very well might.

Traded Andre and Romo for him. Just to give people an idea of where I think his value lies.
Andre Johnson? Interesting.
not that anyone cares about my team but it was not fun to get rid of Andre, however I have Brown and Quick as my WR1/2. Romo was KILLING me and Cam is a notable upgrade.
Hmm. Interesting you think enough to Quick to elevate to WR2. I just picked him up and am looking to move my alleged WR2 for Cam and bump up Quick.

Yeah he's serviceable. Lots of catches and yards but won't get a lot of Tds. Kind of like Andre without the name prestige

Cam Newton completed 24-of-35 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown in Sunday night's Week 3 loss to the Steelers.

Newton was sacked three times and removed late in the fourth quarter after getting shaken up on multiple hits. He was under heavy pass rush all game behind the Panthers' shaky offensive line. Newton lost a fumble on the opening drive of the second half. His touchdown came on a 37-yard pass to Greg Olsen. Newton appeared to re-aggravate his ankle injury and could be limited in practice this week. He'll remain a QB1 for an upcoming matchup against Baltimore's secondary.

The Panthers did not call a single zone-read run in Sunday night's loss to the Steelers.

The Panthers are still coddling Cam Newton's ribs and it's killing his fantasy upside. He had a career-low two carries Sunday night one week after running just four times against the Lions. OC Mike Shula says he's going to gradually ease Newton back into the run game, but we'll believe it when we see it.

I think his ankle is more of a problem then his ribs. Just my 2cents after watching him play

I think his OL getting put in his lap right off the snap half the game had something to do with it too. Man, was Heyward just owning his guy or what?

I have never been a Cam fan so I hope they switch to Anderson if Cam is healthy or not, but I know that will never happen.
