I suppose that is the most sensible conclusion to draw from that statement. It just got a little muddy when they threw in that totally unnecessary (if it is in fact not football-related) clause at the end of the sentence.

You're right, but as we've seen in the past, that can be worse.
New contract? He hasn't done anything to earn a new contract. Perhaps it is the latter however. It's probably something related to pissing off McVey in some way, or the dreaded "I have mental issues and need to take a break from football" related.

Is it? A bunch of day 2 picks never pan out, hell, look at both the Rams current RBs.So they have in next years draft a 2, 3, 6,6,6,7. Having to give up the 2 or 3 for an aging RB is a really good way to tank your team for years to come.I was wondering the same thing. They are also up against the cap aren't they? If the Rams are truly all-in, I wonder if they'd be in on a guy like CMC, or perhaps more likely, Kareem Hunt. I don't think they trust Henderson at all as more than a COP RB, as evidenced by him not starting over a clearly inferior player in Akers, and not putting away waiver fodder in Michel. Maybe David Montgomery as both Monty and Herbert owners could dream?
Realistically, it'd probably be someone like Zach Moss, or maybe Antonio Gibson.
I think everybody was of the opinion that Akers clearly looked awful going back to the playoffs last year.With Robinson's rapid decline & Akers woeful performances this year, we may want to revisit that whole "look at these two complete outliers as success stories from Achille's repair! Isn't modern science amazing?!" narrative that was going around early on.
Also, do the Rams care about the years to come? Stafford is in his mid 30s, and both McVay and Donald openly discussed retirement this offseason.

I mean, Gurley was an RB1 for 3 years, albeit very TD based in year 3.
I think its more just the RBs themselves than something about McVay. I think he wants a bell cow, but Henderson isn't built for that, and Akers hasn't stayed healthy.

Especially when McVay threw out the phrase that this was "uncharted territories", that really makes me wonder. Maybe it's uncharted for for him to deal with and that's what he meant but otherwise, if you take him at his word, it's would seem to be the type of issue we've not seen an NFL team have to deal with before.
And also if you take McVay at his literal word maybe it's not a thing but things because he did say they were "working through some different things".
So yea it makes you speculate and on top of that whatever transpired seemed to be between practice Wednesday and Thursday, or at least that's when it came to a head because he fully practiced Wednesday and the teams beat writers seemed surprised he was not around on Thursday.
I had heard from a Rams beat writers and a national NFL writer during camp that McVay had been re-thinking things this past off-season and came to the conclusion it was better to NOT have a bell cow RB. Obviously I can't say how true those reports were I only wish I'd heard them sooner because this was around 7-10 days before the season started and I had been drafting Akers a few places, I'd even say he was a target of mine. When I heard the first report I started to get a little nervous but was dubious because he basically made Akers a bell cow 6 months after an achilles surgery, during the playoffs, so why would he not with another 9 months or so to recover was my line of thinkins. When I heard the national writer later echo the same thing I began to consider I was wrong to question the earlier report as well as the multiple reports that stated he considered both of them starters and at that point started bailing on investing in him.

Hard to speculate outside the usual things like drugs/alcohol, mental health or I also thought perhaps an immediate family member is in need of care or he needs to be there and the team would rather he go see about his business and then return.
My money would be on the Rams working a trade as we are discussing all this. Maybe they just told him to stay home but i can't understand who would trade for him and what they would even part with, 5th/6th? Akers has not been helping the offense but that run blocking is horrific.

More likely the Browns would deal Hunt. They flirted with moving him just before the season started IIRC.
Hunt would be a scary good back for that team.
Actually Hunt requested a trade and they just shut it down. I had hoped a slow start would propel them to reconsider and it still might but at this point they got through 5 non-Watson games and are only a game out of the division. Maybe things change in next few weeks before the deadline but I get a sense they are trying to stay in this right now and they feel like they need a lot of their RB's to stay afloat.
I would think they would be considerably more open to dealing D'Earnest, even if they won't get as much back.
The odds of Cleveland wanting to trade either of them probably took a little hit with Ford going down as well. He's on IR but not sure if it's the season ending variety.
If it were a trade, I wonder if Akers would be thrown in for a different RB. Akers/pick for new starter type of deal.
Like for instance, if the Rams are shooting for CMC, if you are Carolina, would you rather see what Akers has, or just roll with Chuba/Foreman?
If it were just Akers being traded, I think a 6th sounds about right.

No idea really but his time would obviously be up in LA and you could see a valid reason why Carolina would want him back as part of the package if they moved CMC on idea they are getting him through end of his age 24 season, through end of 2023, and it's only going to run just a little over $2Million total and with their lack of draft picks that makes some sense.
One team your question makes me think about is the Vikings on a trade of Akers centered around getting Mattison back as part of the trade.
My theory would be that Mcvay is frustrated with his RB's and Kevin O'Connell knows and likes Akers(I have no idea if this is true, just spitballing) and that the Vikings would see benefit in Akers versus Mattison on idea that Mattison is a FA and they would have Akers locked up next season for fairly cheap.
All speculation now but sure does sound far more likely then not that Akers time is up and the Rams make some kind of move and to me the bigger question would it be a major move for like a CMC, a smaller deal for the likes of Mattison/Hunt or a really cheap deal like for a D'Ernest type or some kind of deal similar to what they did last year for Sony. Or maybe they'll go 2-4 and say screw it, we suck this year and we'll just roll with what we got.
As far as I know there is no way for the Rams to afford the CMC so i think that idea is dead

In this day and age of social media, does Sean McVey really think he can say what he did without herds of people making up their own stories? Why hide it? It's obvious that whatever it is will come out very soon. Until then, many theories will surface - some of which are not very nice to Akers.

I get the desire to know what’s going on, but there’s really just no reason to speculate. We’ll find out eventually and it will be what it will be. No use making up scenarios in the meantime.

What's the realistic likelihood of an impactful, midseason NFL trade happening? This isn't MLB where you can just open the vault and add another ace to your rotation or bat to your line-up at the trade deadline. Those guys typically just change jerseys and keep doing their thing.

To add to the Ram's RB issues, Jake Funk was poached off of their practice squad earlier this week, so there goes one in-house possibility.

While true most trades that are discussed never happen we just saw the Rams win a SB on the help of acquiring Von Miller and Sony which seems to qualify as impactful to me.

I’m not mocking mental health at all (nor was I in the Ridley thread) but I admit it’s extremely difficult to not engage in speculation here - the way McVay unleashed this one sort of begs it.
Like why tell us all that vague stuff at all? Just say he’s out for personal reasons and there it is.
Saying it’s new ground & they don’t know what they’re dealing with, suggesting it’s not football-related….it’s like a mystery one is compelled to solve.
I don't think they are going to trade for CMC but I don't know how anyone can say the Rams can't find a way to fit someone in their cap either..
As for Mattison based on a few reports he was made available for a trade back in August, according to one beat writer 12 teams called but no one was giving up enough. Hard to see how that would be considered far fetched they'd trade him.

It seems easy not to engage in speculation. I mean at some point we’ll know for sure. What difference does it make if some one on a message board thinks maybe he’s addicted to pain-killer or maybe he’s transitioning to a woman. I don’t see the value add.

Dealing for Gibson makes sense here. Since I sent him to the waiver wire and because his skillset would probably look pretty good in a McVey offense. Ron Rivera's offensive mind has no idea how to utilize him, as to my untrained eye... he still looks like the most complete RB in WAS.
