RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (4 Viewers)

He was on the injury report. League can't fine them. Worst they could do is tell them don't do that.
Slap on the wrist and the undying hatred of fantasy football nerds everywhere.
Little different in the wide wide world of gambling now, wagering is the entire purpose of the injury report, so inside information can't get exploited
It’s an easy “he misspoke” situation -
we told him to be ready, young man was just excited after his big game!

Even though we know they are lying their asses off 😂

He did have the (dreaded) "Q" next to his name, no? Injury was designated as a calf - for about a month - and last week it was noted that they added an Achilles. That couldn't have given owners a warm fuzzy.

It was a stunner how it played out, but not as though he was struck by lightning walking to the ballpark. Those that drafted him had to have a bit of "uh oh" in the backs of their minds.
This is right but CMC did the whole song and dance about he’s 100% playing and I believe Lynch on Friday also said he’s playing.

If there is actually proof that he then told this kid he’s playing that night I could see the org getting fined.

There’s no way that will happen though, I’m sure their statements can all be parsed to give them cover.

Or even easier, they can say he was told he would be the STARTER on Friday, but they still hoped CMC could be the backup right up until before the game.

I mean, even if he’s honestly Q, why wouldn’t you want your opponents to game plan around his presence? Despite protestations, his game day status reflects the team status that was attributed to him…

When Jay Glazer said yesterday he pulled himself out of practice Saturday I felt a lot better about passing him.

Thanks @menobrown Not warning people more is a huge fail on my part and I'm trying to learn. Do you have exactly what Glazer said? Or a link? I couldn't find it.
Nah, Joe. I doubt the report was that he pulled himself because of the issue more so that he did to put himself in a better position tonight. Although...wouldn't we have heard about it if it was an injury-specific issue before now?
He said he pulled himself because of the injury.

This is literally the only tweet I see on it. Maybe he did a TV segment on it?

Yes, just mentioned it was on a segment he did yesterday morning on Fox, was a few minutes before the games kicked off at noon.
Wish I’d caught that. When asked on Saturday if he’d play he said “absolutely”. When asked if he’d have his full workload he said “I hope so”.

Had he said anything negative at all I could have subbed in a WR at flex and instead of losing by 2.5 points I would have won by 12 in my home league.

What an absolutely brutal loss.

What also kills me about the reporting on this is when I had my draft I checked the news right before picking him 1.01 - everything was sunshine & butterflies. Returned to practice, no issues. Even the slightest bit of bad tidings & I either take Lamb at 1.01 or I move down to 3 and take Lamb or Hill or Hall.

At the very least I would have reached further for Mason.

Just a horrible start to the year for so many of us. Luckily this is my only share out of 6-7 redrafts & 3 dynasty leagues.

He was doubtful. There’s no question after Mason’s comments.

i think a lot of the fantasy community missed this in the rankings some to be honest, he shouldn't have been 1.01 pick. RB with an achilles and a calf issue all pre-season those were red flags.
Most drafts occurred before Achilles was mentioned.
But not the calf which is a soft tissue and usually lingers, added concern b/c 28 yr old RB. Not trying to imply i'm the smartest guy in the room here but that's enough of a red flag to have some concern.

That’s all fine and reasonable. He’s also something like 5ppg better than every other RB. It’s a risk/reward decision, and I’m faulting not a single person for taking the gamble on McCaffrey. Season is far from over, and if you handcuffed with Mason you’re perfectly fine.

Is there anyone that did not draft him #1 overall. What a disaster for FFers. I hope he gets well soon. One of my favorite players in the NFL.
I took Barkley at 1.01.................let me caveat that by saying our draft was on Saturday so I had seen how good Barkley looked and was still worried about the calf issue. In addition, if I didn't take Barkley I would have been facing Jayden Reed and his 19 pts as well as Barkley. Figured it was worth the bird in the hand. I feel much better about it now.

I have to say that I'm shocked by this development. I know he's had a calf injury and so does Russ Wilson and probably many others. I heard nothing about achilles until this thread today. I have to think that the niners think / thought was a minor / short term issue otherwise why wouldn't they go out and get some additional RB help?

The Achilles showed up Friday evening. That should have been the red flag for all of us. Also sucks they they did remove the doubtful tag. Shannahan trolled everyone.

- Friday afternoon McCaffrey has to leave practice early
- Sometime on Friday Mason is told he is starting
- Saturday, when asked if there was any doubt in his mind about his Week 1 availability, McCaffrey simply replied, "Nope."

This was all coordinated. They knew he wasn't playing. Obv they will try to lie about it and twist words around but this kind of thing can't happen with the NFL in bed with sports betting sites.

There's no way around it for San Fran. This isn't a court of law. There's no reasonable doubt. Everyone looking at this situation knows they ****ed around to gain a perceived advantage at the expense of those who might bet on the game.

Goodell isn't going to go easy on them.

They said all week long that CMC was 100% playing. CMC said it. Shanahan said it. Lynch said it.

And now we know they told his backup he would be starting 3 days before the game.

Not only that (and this is the real lynchpin, no pun intended), but Schefter said BEFORE THE GAME EVEN STARTED that he would be surprised if CMC even plays NEXT WEEK.

So any argument that CMC was really just a gametime decision and they wanted his backup ready to go just in case can we hand-waved away as ********. They knew. They kept it a secret. And Vegas is going to be absolutely out of their minds PISSED.

They have to set an example. If they don't, deep pockets will lose confidence in the game.

And that can't happen.

Hefty fines and penalized picks incoming. And the worst part is the dumbasses didn't need the advantage they perceived to gain in hiding the injury.

I was drafting too late in the order to be bothered to follow the CMC "August calf" situation closely, but is it possible that the Achilles wasn't a thing until he started to ramp up his activity second half of last week?

And his "availability" to play versus "100% he's starting and getting normal (heavy) workload" are very different things as well. I mean it seems possible that McCaffrey really thought that he would be available to play MNF and then came out for warm-ups and felt something right away and SFF Staff shut him down.

Shanahan was asked about Mason's "Friday" comments and he said something to the effect of "I didn't tell him that" referred to another coach (used some name, seemed like a RB coach perhaps) who may have been giving him a "be ready" type pep talk.

Did also mentioned that he did think Mason would be used a lot on Saturday though, so they knew.

Mason was asked again about this comment and he looked like he was on trial for murder and said lets skip that question.

They are lying their asses off

SF should get fined for it too.

There are quotes being thrown around that McCaffrey would have played if it were a playoff game but also that he is likely to miss week 2. Now they are just messing with us

Along these lines, all the beat writers and insiders were convinced the team was just being ultra cautious with him and that he'd suit up for week 1. It would have been hard to keep it that quiet if the team had genuine long term concerns about his health the whole time. I'm guessing the fact that CMC is not ready was a surprise to management rather than the product of some intense cover up.

No one is saying that though. They're saying SF knew he wasn't playing on Friday afternoon/night. They kept it under wraps until gametime. That should bring down hefty penalties and fines if so.

Full quote from Shanahan on this:

“The Achilles is tendonitis and that stuff comes and goes. And when it is acting up, it’s something you’ve got to be very careful about. Christian's very diligent about that stuff. And if it was a playoff game, he made it very clear to me he believed he could go. But when you hear that type of stuff and it's not a playoff game and it's week one and especially when you're dealing with the lower extremities like that, it was a tough decision, but hearing all the words in the long run, it made it easy.”

So... "no update"? We know the league cares about its public perception in terms of trustworthiness with its ties to betting sites, now. Wouldn't take a "no news" update as some kind of confirmation they don't care about the f*ckery that happened Monday night.

Dr Feeley on the 95.7 the game just said CMC’s Achilles tendon issue is *not* a risk for Achilles rupture.

Just uncomfortable to play on when it flares up. Said there’s no magic cure, just rest.

Once it’s feeling better, he’s good to go, but it could flare up mid-game. Recommends that they ease him in.

SF homers,

In the event CMC is out for a while or God forbid the season, what would this RB picture look like?

SF trades for a vet? SF rides Mason? Who backs up Mason ...Guerrendo/ Taylor?

Shanny not amused by Rappaport’s premature reporting that CMC is a longshot for the Vikings:

Head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't definitive of McCaffrey's status for Week 2, but he did respond to an ESPN report that said there's a "real chance" that the running back wouldn't play next weekend.

"It's amazing. That person must be God," Shanahan said after the 49ers' victory against the Jets. "We just found out he wasn't playing today. I have no idea how he's going to feel tomorrow, or the next day. I thought he was playing this whole week until today. So I don't know who knows that he's not playing next week."

Day to day, could have played Sunday.

It’s clearly overreaction SZN. I’m not very optimistic that he’ll play, but he did practice today.

Guerrendo. If CMC misses extended time they’ll pick up another body at the position but it’s unlikely to be in a trade.

Is this a doctor with the org/firsthand knowledge of CMC specifically, or just based on the wording of the stated diagnosis?

I came into the convo late, but he was not some random call-in - he was an invited guest, and a sports medicine doctor.
Listening to it now. Basically just trying to get a feel for if it’s a more educated guess or roughly equivalent counterpoint to Jesse Morse (also a sports medicine doctor, but more of a fantasy guy than a Niners insider), who does seem to think there’s risk of rupture https://x.com/drjessemorse/status/1833862497746518389?s=46&t=TeGV-WnhJLZUOQoiLrvzEw

He's been at practice again this week. Anyone think he plays? I'm forced to consider starting Jeff Wilson tonight or waiting until Sunday to see if CMC plays or throw in someone like Hopkins or Palmer or something.

Would you just go ahead and start Wilson and not wait?

He was at practice yesterday, and all last week, too. I think he sits again this week, bit I'm just a schlub with an opinion.

Would you start Jeff Wilson tonight with Mostert out and take the risk of CMC starting and not being able to play him? For context, I have Breece Hall and Gibbs as well (keeper league and had first pick). So I'll be starting Breece and Wilson as RBs and Gibbs in flex.
