RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, NO (2 Viewers)

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire left the Chiefs' Week 5 game against the Bills with a knee injury.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was carried off the field by teammates after suffering a bad knee injury. He went to the locker room soon afterward and was quickly declared out for the rest of the game, per the official broadcast. He finished with 13 yards on seven carries on the ground in addition to 11 yards on one catch as a pass-catcher. If he misses any time, Darrel Williams would be Kansas City's RB1 with journeyman Jerick McKinnon mixing in behind him.

When they showed him walking to X-rays near the end of the game, he was walking kinda slowly, but didn’t have the pronounced limp he went down the stairs with when he left the field. And in that late clip they showed him walking up stairs, which is also kind of good sign, ligament-wise.

Just saying what I saw. Maybe it’s worse, maybe not, but I kept thinking “why they makin the dude walk down and up stairs with a major knee injury?!”

I’m optimistic it wasn’t as bad as it looked on the field. I’ve been wrong before though.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss a few weeks with an MCL sprain.

It's actually a pretty fortunate update from how it looked last night, where Edwards-Helaire was carried off the field by teammates. Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon stand to gain the most from Edwards-Helaire's injury. Williams led the team with 37 snaps and five carries last night, and should be the lead back, while McKinnon mixed in mostly on passing downs.

Chiefs placed RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (knee) on injured reserve.

This was expected after Edwards-Helaire was said to miss "a few weeks" for recovery. Darrel 'The Mentor' Williams closed Sunday night's blowout with five touches (and four targets) to Jerick McKinnon’s one after Edwards-Helaire was helped off the field in the third quarter, suggesting Williams will be treated as a workhorse without CEH for the team's soft upcoming schedule against The Football Team, Titans, Giants, Packers, Raiders, and Cowboys. McKinnon has also handled just one carry all year. The team additionally signed RB Derrick Gore from the practice squad as insurance.

Worth a buy low? 🤷‍♂️

I don't think so, he was only a desperation start before the injury and will be even more so now.  Even before the injury, his usage was on pace to decline for the third or fourth week in a row.  Williams and McKinnon will continue to get more usage even if CEH is healthy.

Week 1 - CEH had 17 touches for 72 empty yards, while playing 47 of the team's 65 snaps (72%).
Williams and McKinnon combined for 18 snaps (14 & 4), but only 1 touch

Week 2 - CEH had 13 touches for 46 empty yards (and a lost fumble), while playing 33 of the team's 51 snaps (65%).
Williams and McKinnon combined for 18 snaps (14 & 4), with 4 touches

Week 3 - CEH had 19 touches for 109 yards and a TD (and also a fumble), while playing 49 of the team's 79 snaps (62%).
Williams and McKinnon combined for 30 snaps (27 & 3), with 9 touches

Week 4 - CEH had 16 touches for 114 yards and a TD, while playing 35 of the team's 67 snaps (52%).
Williams and McKinnon combined for 32 snaps (24 & 8), with 12 touches

Before he got injured in week 5, he certainly was not a desperation start.  Sure, his snap percentage was dropping, but he was RB19 even with the 2 weak fantasy games to start the season.  He was an RB1 in both weeks 3 and 4.
CEH had 341 yards on 65 touches
Williams had 99 yards on 25 touches
McKinnon had 14 yards on 1 touch

A healthy CEH can be a very serviceable RB2, even if he cedes playing time.  Now for the important question - how long before he comes back?

What's the latest on his timetable to return? I believe he's eligible to come off IR next week, but I was reading today's Primer at FantasyPros and they mentioned off-hand that Williams is expected to have the starting role for at least the next two weeks. Is that based on any specific report? I can't find anything at Rotoworld and the like.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire injury update

Edwards-Helaire (knee) can return from IR in Week 9, but we'll have to monitor injury updates later in the week to get an indication of his status. What we do know is Green Bay is a middle-of-the-pack defensive unit against RBs, so the matchup is neither scary nor favorable. Chances are, this will be a high-volume passing game, and Edwards-Helaire hasn't been involved in the passing game on a consistent basis.

For now, our rankings are built around the assumption CEH will be out, and we rank Darrel Williams as the RB15 in standard and PPR leagues. Williams has arguably been more productive than CEH, especially through the air. Derrick Gore stole more touches and looked good on Monday night, so he has potential flex value in standard leagues.

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (knee-IR) has not yet been designated to return.

Edwards-Helaire's three-week minimum requirement for IR has been met as he was placed on it after Week 5's game, but the Chiefs have not yet even opened his practice window. Darrel Williams will remain the lead back in Kansas City for the short term, with Derrick Gore nipping at his heels after a nice debut on Monday night.

Wouldn't it be something if the problem with the KC offense of late, was missing CEH?

Its probably not, but I'm expecting some of those stories to come out.

CEH getting hurt coincides with Mahomes struggles. There's no overlap.

Who knows if it's a direct correlation?

Their Points For dropped when CEH went out.  In the 5 games CEH started (including week 5 when he got hurt) they averaged 30.8 ppg.  In the 4 games CEH was out they averaged 16.0 ppg.

Week 1 - KC Scored 33 points

Week 2 - KC Scored 35 points

Week 3 - KC Scored 24 points

Week 4 - KC Scored 42 points

Week 5 - KC Scored 20 points - CEH got injured in this game

Week 6 - KC Scored 31 points

Week 7 - KC Scored 3 points

Week 8 - KC Scored 20 points

Week 9 - KC Scored 17 points

It's probably coincidence. Teams had just switched to the two-high safety look that is giving them undue fits. They have to run the ball and expect the score to be in the high twenties rather than throw the ball deep and beat teams with thirty-five to forty.

CEH should see mucho action when he gets back, though, because of the new defensive alignment, so it's quite possible he scores well if they choose to stick with him running the ball.

If they don't stick with him, that'll tell you all you need to know about this experiment.

Chiefs have a lot of problems. Mahomes doesn't like being patient, I don't think Kelce is quite the player he was and the wrs after Hill are crap.

It is good news as a CEH owner that the other rbs have been worse. So he's not completely useless. Maybe they'll throw him the ball a bit more when he comes back.

If he gets the green light to go this week, I'm forced to start him in my main league.  Down to Eli Mitchell, Adrian Peterson, Mark Ingram otherwise.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said it is "probably a stretch" for Clyde Edwards-Helaire (knee, IR) to return for Week 10 against the Raiders.

When asked if CEH would return Sunday night, Reid transparently responded that Edwards-Helaire "worked all week" but "it's probably a stretch." Darrel Williams has averaged 18.2 touches in his last four games sans the first-rounder and will continue being used as a workhorse RB2 ahead of Derrick Gore for as long as CEH remains sidelined.

You been drinking?
No, just laughing to myself. CEH was such a disastrous dynasty pick over Taylor and Swift and it stems from being too slow, too small, too fat, and not a tackle breaker or terribly elusive.

But if you get him in open space, he's awesome!

Narrator: Everybody is awesome in space.

Stop it, rock. Nobody cares. Sorry, guys. I need another self-imposed ban from the thread. This is turning into like when I hated Eddie Lacy as a back. I just got sucked in by my GB wgoldsph, who I know has this thing for Clyde for some reason.

Luckily for CEH, Darrel Williams has not done enough in his 4 games as starter to threaten CEH's comeback.  And, as @travdogg said, KC is probably looking for any reason to mix things up at the moment, which includes getting CEH back on the field.

You know I love you rock.  Even after you stopped being a nation.

And over that same time the KC offense as a whole has looked pedestrian.

he was quite fat, and slow, IIRC.

I bought in redraft after his 1100 td ROY season. Then he started tweeting about food all the time, & got bigger & bigger.

good times. Sigh

All the people were doing victory laps on my head after that season. Then...well...we saw what happened. I think he had one more good one, and then nothing.

But boy did I take stuff for questioning him and his weight.
