RB Trey Sermon, IND (3 Viewers)

I'm going to back Waldman on this. Sermon showed all of the traits of being a solid pro RB. His college tape is amazing. SF is the wrong scheme for him, well documented outside of SF beatwriters. He could very well go somewhere else and flourish.
Sermon should have NEVER been ranked ahead of Najee Harris, Travis Etienne or Javonte Williams. Never.
Waldman did have him behind Harris, Etienne and Williams in Post Draft RSP

I'm going to echo both RuffRodys and Trip and say that Sermon would be better served on another team. Time to cut the cord. They want an outside zone runner, and Sermon isn't that guy. The kind of guy Shanahan wants is a fast, one-cut runner. Sermon isn't that.

Makes me wonder how Breece Hall is going to do in NY. As much as I like Hall, I've brought this up before. And now with Carter looking like he's first on the depth chart, it seems like Hall is going through a Sermon-lite trial by fire in the outside zone as a runner whose hallmark is his Le'Veon Bell-esque patience.

Just a sidebar there.

The talent gap between Hall and Sermon is substantial, so that may shorten the curve, but you make a great point.

I learned the last few years to just never draft a San Fran running back. Shanahan can’t be trusted.

I’ll laugh when Sermon is starting week 1 for some reason and all the Mitchell drafters buttholes clench.

Sermon is kinetically‐incorrect for the NFL game. I can see it plain as day. I don't own any shares, but if I did I'd leap at an offer of a 5th round dynasty pick.

John Lynch on Trey Sermon today: "He worked incredibly hard and had a tremendous offseason. Hasn’t showed up in the games, but throughout training camp has been one of our best players.”
:ROFLMAO:

Perhaps it's because I roster him, but that seems like something to build on, actually. The Niners have had trouble on their interior line, and it was evident during the game last night.

His college tape might have been good but I can't forget the fact that Oklahoma, Ohio State and San Fran, coaches don't seem to want to play him. They always seem to be looking for someone else.

He got beat out by Rhamondre at Oklahoma. Given Rhamondre's prowess at the pro level his first year as a rookie, there's no shame in that. And he was tOSU's starter down the stretch when the games mattered. San Fran is more worrisome.

I don't put too much stock in college share anymore. That's just a function of a glut of talent sometimes, like at Bama, or poor coaching.

He got beat out by Kennedy Brooks and Rhamondre. In Sermon's last year at Oklahoma, Kennedy Brooks got abut 100 more touches than Stevenson or Sermon.

Heh. Well aren't you the fact Daddy...

Kennedy Brooks, huh? His testing was awful, too. All of those backs tested subpar.

“NBC Sports' Peter King believes Trey Sermon will be the #49ers No. 2 running back to start the regular season. #FTTB”

I was fooled once by Sermon last year. Shame on him.

I may be fooled twice. Shame on me.

Side note… can anyone teach me how to get tweets to post in a better format? I’m not used to it on this new board. And I end up copying and pasting the actual tweet itself.

So ... Now the waiting game to see who grabs him and whether it's somewhere that he'll get his shot.
The list of teams that don't have 2 RBs better than him, is very small. His best shot was probably in SF.

Giants maybe? Steelers? Titans? All of those teams have 300+ touch guys though.

I wonder if he's a practice squad guy at this point?

AZ, LA Chargers (pre-Michel), Buffalo sure doesn't, and the list goes on. He's almost assuredly claimed off of waivers by a club. SFO was reportedly trying to sneak him through to the practice squad (stupid).

That Elijah Mitchell pick the other night is feeling better and better,

How tragic for Sermon but at the same time, certainly an NFL team is going to invite him in, still see potential for him when he lands elsewhere. He simply was a bad fit for this team.

Somebody that thinks their special RB1 that has had a clear path all summer, now suddenly will see Sermon land on the roster, could make a few folks nervous depending where he lands.

WTF, shoulda kept Hasty
The 49ers have a RB fetish, and clearly they can plug in any mope, and he'll tear off a 5 game stretch. If I was a 49ers fan, I wouldn't care which backs they have.
It's clearly scheme.
Yes and no.

Yes, the scheme will make just about any RB productive.

But man I’d love to see a high caliber back in it. They’d be a superstar.

Trading for Mattison would be nice. Not sure he’s that high caliber, but he’s better than what we’ve got.

It’ll never happen tho.

They gave up on a 3rd round pick after exactly one year...going from that to being fantasy relevant would be quite the feat.

Yeah I'm really surprised they cut him after one season. They kept Jalen Hurd for what, 3 or 4 seasons? It's not like the 49ers to admit a bad pick that quick.

Square peg in a round hole. Ugly duckling, looking for a flock of swans.

I don't think he's 49'ers PS bound. That whole biz of him being the #2 behind Mitchell was a ruse to try to get a draft pick for him in trade. Didn't work, hence, released.

As a B1G guy who paid a lot of attention to him during his college career, I'll reserve judgement on his NFL fortunes until I see him on another Team, preferably one with a more conventional running scheme. I think the kid has talent. Just needs to find the right home.

Something like this happens, I always think it's personal stuff that we don't know about.

And I don't mean an arrest, but the team is aware of something with a player that leads them to believe it's not going to work out.

Like, the player isn't a hard worker, doesn't put in the time, doesn't eat right, etc. Or the guy has a hookers and blow problem. Maybe not fatal, but if deciding between two guys, maybe it makes the difference.

I thought the way Shanahan publicly called him out at first was telling. Some guys get in the doghouse and never leave. Shanahan's father was notorious for holding personal grudges about benign things.
