Edge of Tomorrow

You'll walk out thinking that was pretty badass. It doesn't have a lot of heart but it also doesn't drag. Tight action movie. They could have gone for more but great as is. Worth going to the movies for. Think E. Blunt is about perfect but in this flick she didn't have me drooling. Her "dip" scene was eventually almost comical not incredibly hot like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment. You'll understand when you watch.

1. Edge of Tomorrow

2. Captain America

3. X-Men
Really looking forward to this.

My wife and I recently rented and watched the following:

1. Short Term 12 - fantastic movie. Melancholic, but really well done and very interesting if you've had any experience dealing with troubled teens.

2. Her - Really enjoyed it. Probably been discussed her before.

3. Perks of Being a Wallflower - Similar to Short Term and the Way Way Back. Good stuff.

Enough Said with Julia Louis Dreyfuss and James Gandolfini. Good performances, some touching scenes and some chuckles. Not horrible.

The Way Way Back - Carrell is doing his level best to get away from his comedy typecast and I think he is, for the most part, successful but Rockwell (who is always good) and Allison Janney ("Yes, I'm off the wagon. Accept it and move on." :lmao: ) steal the show. The lead kid really isn't that interesting and some of the circumstances that the writers tried to make seem plausible really felt contrived (stuck in the tube, dancing, passing in the tube).

It got a ton of love in here and while I was watching it I wasn't sure why but the more I think about it the more I think that at its core it is a good story that has real charm.

Europa Report - Found footage space film. Pretty decent I guess.

But ultimately

We spend billions (trillions) and risk the lives of humans to go to Europa and find a bacteria and a killer octopus.
that's what it boils down to. In reality that doesn't seem worth the cost.
If we went to Europa and found that it would definitely be worth the cost. Think about what that would mean if it happened.

Apologies if this was already posted, but it's a nice guide to what's available:

The 101 Best Movies Streaming on Netflix 2014
I've seen 70 movies from this list, and I must say this is an excellent collection.
i checked in around the mid-60's. i think i might have missed a number of the docs they listed. i just don't have the time to watch like i used to between my duties as dad and as boyfriend.
I've seen all but 19 or 20.

Lots of good stuff in there- and lots off the beaten path- along with some dogs (cough, cough, English Patient)
I can't remember one thing about that movie. Not a good sign.
I just remember it's length (and girth) and coming out annoyed. One of those "oh look at us- ENGLISH ACCENTS- aren't we fabulous"

What would it mean?

Verification that we are not alone in the universe? Which just by the sheer number of stars and planets in the universe is a virtual certainty. So we find a bacteria and a killer octopus on Europa, who cares? Maybe, possibly we find the cure for cancer in those organisms, but we're just as likely to find the next virulent plague that wipes out massive portions of humanity. The only truly important thing about Europa is harvesting the water, #### the killer octopi. They wasted trillions of dollars and sacrificed six lives for questionable potential benefits.
Although to be fair the sheer amount of work and research put into that program almost certainly led to many beneficial advances in technology.

The last part (advanced in technology) is very important.

In addition to that, knowledge is worth it. It's just money. From a "what can it do for me" perspective I'm sure no one really cared when we found out the Earth wasn't flat either, but that ended up mattering a lot. Additionally, would you rather live in a world where we thought the Earth was flat, the sun revolved around it, and that light in the sky was angels shining flashlights on us if it meant we could have a few trillion extra dollars?

Finding advanced life on another planet, no matter what form it took, would be the biggest discovery in our short history. And octopi are very intelligent they certainly qualify as advanced life

It seems like you are creating a false choice I am not suggesting halting all scientific research so it doesn't have to be a "Spend trillions and go to Europa or don't spend trillions and go back to the stone age" scenario. Besides determining the earth was round and revolved the sun were inexpensive observational endeavors.

To answer your question it depends, are people still starving?

Well if you can make good sushi out of them, then I'm on board.
Otherwise it ain't worth it.

Lone Survivor:

Had a tough time with this one. I could feel the passion in the project of the people involved wanted to get this story on screen. At the same time, I couldn't shake the feeling that it felt like a very bloody Lifetime movie. Great story, Ok movie. 5/10

In A World...

Quirky movie about a female trying to make in the male-dominated voiceover business. Lake Bell stars, writes, directs. Funny, serious, sweet, and just well done. There are feminist themes, but they're not overwhelming; rather, they're subtly done, and they show how both men and women devalue women and value men based on voice. It's not a clobber you over-the-head type of thing until Geena Davis comes in and gives us a healthy dose of both reality and cynicism about modern feminism. It's worth the watch. Ken Marino, Rob Coddry, Eva Longoria, Geena Davis, and others all show up in this movie.

Also, according to Roger Ebert, they got the guy who was the voice of the NFL Today (and the guy from A Serious Man) to be the father of the two main character daughters in the movie.

7.5/10

I saw this on a recent plane ride. It passed the time on the flight but yeah, it wasn't anything really special.

I would have still ziptied their hands to slow them down heading back to the camp.

White House Down might have been one of the worst movies I've tried to endure for a long time. Had to pull the plug on it. 3/10
I haven't seen WHD, but I have to imagine it was better than Olympus Has Fallen.
I am not willing to find out.
It think that's wise. I actually got angry watching Olympus.
seems like most of the people I encounter like the one they saw first better. yikes.

Brake

Stephen Dorff plays a secret service guy trapped in the trunk of a terrorists car. Not too bad. Saw it on Netflix. Some decent twists and turns. Definitely held my interest, much better than I thought it would be.

3.5/5

Holy hell... RIPD... yep. Kept waiting for the Dude to just be the damn Dude and take me to another movie.
While this is an unapologetic ripoff of Men In Black (is at least related in some way - anybody know?) I actually thought this movie was mindlessly enjoyable, if immensely dumb.

I liked the movie in and of itself. But they embellished a lot from the actual events which I found rather frustrating.

Olympus Has Fallen wasn't great but White House Down looks terrible. Jamie Foxx as president? Channing Tatum as the hero? Is it supposed to be a comedy?

It's beyond terrible. i watch it in 15 minute snippets just to get annoyed.

Saw Jack Reacher. So I guess it's not a sci-fi movie like I was expecting :bag: . Pretty stupid overall in spite of the cliched story arc of - wait, who REALLY did this. Love the murderous cabal of evil entrepreneurs. Basically terrible... but somehow, I still kinda sorta enjoyed it.

Also saw Trance? Think it was Danny Boyle? A hot mess. Except there's some famous US actress going full monty, so I guess that was good.
I enjoyed Jack Reacher also. Not sure why, don't like Tom Cruise and fairly bland in the action aspect, but I liked it

If you like Brake be sure to check out "Buried". Brake was the red-headed pseudo sequel to the much better Buried.

The ending of Brake is a little fuzzy to me, but...

I thought it took it one twist too far. What was the master plan all along? Hope that they would coincidentally be driving right past the location at the same time his wife was asking him about it so he might glance at it and give it away?

Tim's Vermeer

"Inventor Tim Jenison seeks to understand the painting techniques used by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer." Penn & Teller documentary.

Would catch myself with an awestruck smile throughout this. Jenison is a remarkable guy.

Tim's Vermeer

Cute little documentary. Maybe a little long in the beginning and not enough after the payoff. It's about a quirky, geeky inventor who is intrigued by the artist Vermeer and believes he's figured out the secret to how Vermeer was able to paint so well. So, with no formal training in art, or painting, at all, Tim goes off to Amsterdam, measures Vermeer's room from The Music Lesson and recreates the dimensions, walls, props, etc. in a warehouse in Texas so he can try to duplicate a Renaissance master with the first painting Tim's ever tried to paint.

Like I said, wanted more of the payoff so time to check the DVD extras.
Yeah Hockney and the other dude really didn't give up the props.

Perhaps involving more of Jenison's family would have worked. Would imagine it was an emotional reveal to them when they saw what their dad/husband painted. Especially if they were kept from looking in on his progress.

How to train your Dragon 2 A-, Good just as not as good as the first

It lagged in the middle and it wasn't as funny as the first movie.

Sad to see Stoic bite it, but the final battle scene was well worth it.

I saw it in 2D, I could see where a couple of parts could be good in 3D, but I didn't miss anything.

And my daughter and I loved it when Toothless went all Godzilla trapped in the ice
Sorry about the spoiler

Edge of Tomorrow

Very entertaining. The movie is structured much like a video game wherein if you fail, you have to keep replaying the level over and over again. The effects are wonderful in this movie, but the star could be the editing. Every time Cruise's character reboots, the movie is edited such that it never feels repetitive.

Recommended for sci-fi / action fans.

Silver Linings Playbook

Awful. Couldn't even finish this movie. While the story is ok, and I generally like Bradley Cooper, this movie is a failure because I don't believe for a second that Cooper's character was mentally ill.

Maybe it's Tom Cruise fatigue with Oblivion and Jack Reacher streaming in a lot of places. Oblivion was decent and Reacher was terrible IMO. Nobody turned out for this one. As the commentary has said you have an action flick that is not a super hero movie nor a sequel yet can't find an audience. Disappointing. Edge of Tomorrow is very satisfying.

Edge of Tomorrow a generic title. Should have went with Live. Die. Repeat.

The Rover C- Too much "Meh", not enough Robert Pattinson. Never thought I would ever say that.

Him singing "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" was hilarious.
And then when his brother shoots him, damn, it got dusty in the theater.

But all that death and destruction over a dog? A dead dog? Guy Pearce could have asked the guys when they stopped and talked. "Hey, you can have the car, can I have my dead dog in the trunk"?
And that soundtrack was annoying as ****. I swear they grabbed all the vuvuzelas left over from the 2010 World Cup and put them in this soundtrack
