Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (14 Viewers)

Watching Fast & Furious 7. I am a big proponent of suspension of disbelief and all that, my posts in here support that fact, but I have no idea why I haven't switched to anything else. Like My 600 lb Life is more engaging than this. Bart Simpson reading the collected works of E.E. Cummings would be more exciting. And mind you I am 5 glasses of wine in and think Ash vs Evil Dead is hilarious and awesome. On paper a film like this is tailor made for me. Beyond it being a truly brilliant level of awful, horrible, disjointed filmmaking what is the appeal of these movies?

Seriously, explain it to me like I'm Officer Pete Malloy.

I don't mind action movies that know they're dumb, so this one didn't bother me.

I thought it picked up a bit around the point of the Ronda Roussey vs Michelle Rodriguez throwdown.  But I really have no idea how they got 8 or 10 or however many movies out of this franchise.

Well, you have some idea  :)

But seriously, when The Rock uses his giant muscles to smash his cast, that's the movie telling you there's nothing here that's possible in the actual universe. It's not that the movie is good, because it's terrible. But it's joyfully terrible.

Yes, it had a few moments here and there but for a 2+ hour movie, man it was dumb. I also couldn't help thinking that if the God's Eye was searching everywhere, why didn't they have the Hacker girl just wear a ski mask???

Totally get that and laughed when he did that.  Walking down the street filling a helicopter full of bullets from a minigun was fun too (it not crashing when he blew out the tail rotor was weird though).  I am all about suspension of disbelief but I still thought this movie was mostly crap for the first 1/2 and then still pretty much crap but with a few :lol:  moments probably due to my BAC.

They make money which is why they keep making them but I have no idea why they make money.  Then again I have no idea how Trump is going to win the Republican nomination either.  Although I fear there is a direct correlation between the two.

 
But you were ok with them dragging a 10 ton safe down a city with 2 cars??? Or bringing down a C130 with 3 cars?

I mean I was but this was just another in line with 5 and 6 but not as good

Again, you know why they make money. Some people want to walk into a movie and turn their brain off for 90 minutes. I love talky art movies more than anyone in the world. But I do think that there's a place for entertainment like this. I watch Agents of Shield with my son. Now, there's no way I would have got into this if I didn't have a child, but I do like it and it's a nice way to escape every week.

:goodposting: We take DVD's with us up to Canada in case weather keeps us indoors( No T.V., phones, internet where we go everything is on a generator) and these type of movies are perfect to watch on those days.

Take out the Cribbage board, put these type of movies on and enjoy a few :banned:

My BIG screen, surround sound and subwoofer are why I watch these :)

 
So I rented Bridge of Spies for tonight.  I know it is up for awards and stuff, but what did you guys think about it?  Any good?

The only movies I tend to go see in the theater are "Action Movies"... . As an example.. Really want to see "Eddie the Eagle" as it brings back memories of those Olympics.. But will wait for Pay per view..

The first time I saw the commercial for "London has Fallen" I said "Really... Same movie, same cast, just in London this time???

Hate to admit it but it has been awhile since a :popcorn: movie has been released that I'll probably go see it with my Dad   :bag:

True Detective - Season 1

Re-watched this for the first time since the initial airing. I remember this season as being great, and I was wrong: it's a masterpiece. This season is better than most films. Better writing, better acting, better photography, and better plot. Brilliant. I don't think I will ever tire of watching this show. I think it's relevant to touch on Season 2 here. A lot of people were disappointed with season 2. I get that. Season 1 is a lot better. But this is like saying Casino isn't as good as Goodfellas. Ok, so it isn't as good. Slap a new title on True Detective Season 2, and you have a very good 8 hours of television. Season 2 is still a great deal better than 80% of TV shows.

Agree 100% on the acting, photography, and writing.  Overall it left me unsatisfied for whatever reason.

 
The Last Days on Mars - I had no idea what to expect going in. I thought it was more sci-fi based with a virus/bacteria killing them.

[spoiler alert!]

Very disappointed when the Martian zombie jammed a power drill into the guys stomach. I didn't think it would be that kind of movie, especially with the quality of the acting and cinematography up to that point. It definitely could have been a lot worse though. Poor decision after poor decision by the scientists, Martian zombies and an incomplete ending make it tough to recommend. 2.5/5

I always thought Liev Schreiber would have had a bigger career. Solid actor that seems to make some questionable choices in roles.

 
Hail Caesar!

What a hilarious movie. I always see Coen movies in the theater. But after seeing A Serious Man and Inside Llewyn Davis, I was a bit concerned that this would be yet another flat Coen effort. Don't worry: Hail Caesar has several laughs. Highly recommended to Coen fans.

 
Watched Room, while I could not be engrossed in it, it was good any my wife loved it.   It had the exact opposite effect on me and the wife.   When I watch movies they usually have my full attention and she watches while playing on the phone or surfing the net.   With Room, I was the one surfing the net while watching and she was engrossed with the film.   I would give it 7.5/10.

I always hope the comedies I go see have several laughs.  Only a few laughs is a waste of time, and money, and a whole lot of laughs carries serious health risks.  Several laughs is perfect.

I really need to find the time to go back and watch this again.  Loved it the first time around.  If it were a movie it would have been an Oscar darling.

Finally saw American Sniper, way overdue.  I thought it was really well done and Cooper was great in it.  Solid 7/10.  I'm struggling to figure out why there was such controversy around it as the movie didn't really get politcal at all, and instead focused on the character.

Also caught The Interview on Netflix.  I was expecting it to be pretty dumb and over the top with just a couple of funny moments, but I was pleasantly surprised.  It was a good comedy all around and didn't degrade quite as much in the last act as most comedies do.

 
San Andreas - yes I knew going in that it was you typical bg budget disaster flick but this one felt WAY TOO predictable.  I mean they usually are but this one felt like it used every generic plot point from every disaster film ever made.  If it had a different cast I probably would have turned it off.

Started watching - Interstellar but fell asleep.  Enjoyed the first half thus far

Had never seen this.  Really enjoyed it. 

Spotlight 3.5/5

Watched it before the Oscars and didn't know it was up for best picture.  Good realistic drama movie with superb acting, but I wasn't terribly blown away by anything in it.  Really didn't feel like there was an arc.  Again, the acting was great and I think it did a nice job with the story, but I got bored at times and the fact that I knew what was going to eventually happen probably ruined some of it. Worth a watch, but not best picture.

I think the controversy was more so around the issue of whether the main character is an American hero or a sociopath who happens to have been directed down a legit path (or somewhere in between).  It may have turned political because the sides of the political spectrum probably very closely aligned with the answer to the original question. 

American Sniper reminded me of the "Passion of the Christ" in the sense that it was exactly what I anticipated it to be.  And if you're into war accolades and Jesusy things you're probably going to find them to be awesome.  If you're anti-war and anti-religion you'll find them distasteful and bigoted.  

ETA: As jdoggydog correctly points out, if you're into movies you'll probably find both to simply be mediocre scripts and films.

It had been quite sometime since I sat down and watched Big with Tom Hanks from beginning to end... When my daughter said she wasn't sure if she'd seen it we sat down and watched it over the weekend. . 

I forgot how many :lmao: moments there are.. still funny all these years later. :thumbup:

This movie didn't bother me at all politically. I'm a pinko liberal socialist, but soldiers don't get to choose who they fight. So injecting political controversy into a movie like this is dull and pointless. 

My problem with the movie is the script is mediocre.

Yeah, I guess I don't know what the overall buzz was about the movie, but I didn't really find it that political.  I just thought it was an average movie that they tried to inject faux drama into with the telephone calls, etc.. and I thought they glossed over his mental stuff when he got home (seemed like one meeting and all is good).  Just thought it was a bland movie for an otherwise interesting person and story.

 
Spotlight:

Watched it again tonight, and it deserved the win last night.  Loved everything about it.  I still don't get why so many around these parts seem to think it was a weak year for movies - I thought it was a fantastic year.  Still have more to catch up on, too.

I watched it last and thought it was a very good movie.   Not sure it was Oscar worthy as it didn't blow me away or leave me wanting to see it again.   8.5/10.

Now, thinking, I have not seen Revenant or Brooklyn but all the other best picture nominees.   Of the ones I seen Spotlight and the Big Short were the best.

Be against war. That's fine. I have no problem with that.

But this is like hating SE7EN because murder is wrong. Movies often tread in moral relitivism, and that makes for interesting plots and scripts.

I keep saying it - I still don't understand some of the ratings around here.  8.5/10 is a movie you wouldn't see again and didn't blow you away?

I will admit that I went in a little reluctantly.  Been more on the "miss" side of stuff that critics seem to love in the action/comic book realm - GotG, Mad Max, etc..  Ended up loving this one.  Quips and humor aside, what really drew me in was the decent action and how dark it actually got at times.  Just had a bit of everything.  Will think about it more later, but I think this would be pretty high on my list of favorite "superhero" movies.  8/10

If you like Deadpool, you should rent Punisher: War Zone.

The kills are so violent, they're hilarious. One of the best comic movies ever made, and absolutely inappropriate for children.

Yeah, take last year for instance.  I seen all the movies for best pic once.   I only rewatched Sniper, twice and Whiplash many times.   The other movies were good like Birdman, Imitation, Budapest, Theory but no desire too see any again.  All their value to me was in the first viewing.

i posted in the DeadPool thread after i saw it last weekend. for me, i just didn't think it bowled me over. it had funny moments but that's about it. the script was pretty weak despite a very game RR. worse still, the director had little idea of how to stage or show a fight scene. it just mostly bored me.

I agree with almost all of this, and yet I did like the action sequences.

If somebody wasn't laughing all the way through, I could see how this would be a chore to get through.  I guess I liked the action more than you, and if it wasn't for R.R. this movie would have been a dud.  Like you said, there was really no plot to speak of, the villains were weak, and the X-Men sidekicks were bland.  Despite that I had a blast, and Reynolds carried the movie.  I liked him and his girlfriend a lot.  I am sure my low expectations and not seeing a trailer (don't know how) also really helped keep it fresh enough to get into it. 

 
Man Up:

Average little rom-com with Simon Pegg and Lake Bell.  He mistakes her for his blind date, she goes along with it, and hijinx ensue.  I liked them togethe and had a few laughs.  Also has a sexy as hell bowling sequence.  I say this a lot for this genre, but you could do a lot worse if you are looking for something to put in on date night.  6/10
