Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (2 Viewers)

We don't dine out very often but part of the financial calculation for me is NOT HAVING TO DO DISHES AND CLEANUP!!!!1111one So it's more this year verses five years ago, okay.....I think I'd pay a good $10 or more to get out cleaning up pots, pans, knives, loading the dishwasher, putting food away, etc.....

I'm not sure if I'm making any sort of point in here, but the cost of things is more everywhere and it can be a little silly but my god, do I enjoy the night off from cleanup.

paper plates bro...chicks dig them

My wife won't let us have them in the house.....no bottles of water either.

:kicksrock:
Oh wow. My wife and I eat off paper plates about 90% of the time. The only time we don’t is pasta …a huge salad with grilled steak or chicken etc stuff like that. We do not own a dishwaparts.

To each their own. Paper plates are just going to end up in landfills. I'd rather whine about doing dishes than litter the planet with more trash.

And no, this isn't my wife posting.
We burn paper here 😃

Yeah, that's part of the problem.
I have lots of problems. Burning paper in a barrel once in awhile ain’t one

I would suggest stop visiting these places that have out of whack prices
Isn't my place to tell someone else what to do with their $, but this was a contributing factor to us cutting out fast casual. Haven't been to chain casual dining in years and fast food has always been restricted to a last resort (< once per month), but fast casual was something we sustained from college to pre-covid. Not on the other side though. Only if I can expense it as a business meal.

I'm baffled by how many people aren't doing mobile/app orders.
We eat ~90% local so we specifically avoid using apps to maximize the $ going into their wallets. With proper planning we try to pay in cash too.
Same confusion up above. He was talking about apps for the restaurant like Dominos has their own app and rewards. Same with Wendy’s or Moe’s, etc. Some places also have rewards on their web site.

He’s not talking about Door Dash or Uber Eats which make eating more expensive and take money from the restaurant. Usually, local places don’t have rewards but most chains do and also have coupons/specials in their apps. People who don’t use their apps pay more.

I'm baffled by how many people aren't doing mobile/app orders.
Aside from rarely eating fast food (Taco Bell a half dozen times, Chipotle once, in 20+ years), can’t stand a bunch of otherwise worthless apps on my phone. I do like OpenTable for reservations though.

The wife uses Grubhub/UberEats to order food for trainees, and her Dad, since her Mom passed a couple years ago.

I'm baffled by how many people aren't doing mobile/app orders.

Brutal honesty: I hate having 1,000 apps on my phone. Just too messy of an interface for me.

I guess there's ways to tidy up the presentation so you're not scrolling through pages of apps you use once a month at most. But still. Inertia.
Yep. I limit apps to one page on my phone. If something really merits adding, it has to jockey for position, and something else gets demoted.

We went to this very dive restaurant the other night. Awesome seafood. All you can eat shrimp for 35- which is up from 22ish pre-Covid. It’s a lot of food though and very good so I’m fine with it.

I did go to McDonald’s for 3 breakfast sandwiches and 4 hash browns the other day and that was alarmingly 28 dollars.

Fast food is just not worth the cost anymore. You can go almost anywhere else and get better food for the same cost. I guess paying the workers 20 bucks an hour is taking a toll

I'm surprised how many people eat fast food tbh.....

I consider myself an awful diet person and eat lunch out multiple times a week but outside and occasional Chick-fil-A stop I can't tell you the last time I ate at McDonald's Wendy's etc

Some of ya'll are just so out of touch with reality sometimes - I read these threads about having to go back to the office, and why do people eat fast food.
Fast food is, well fast. A vast majority of the American workforce a) only gets 30 minutes for a lunch and b) gets paid $15-25/hour.
Groceries are expensive these days. Most fast food restaurants have value menus or less expensive options that can allow an hourly worker to get a meal to sustain them for less than 10 dollars in less than 10 minutes.

And even an old guy like me has been able to figure out how to group apps by function and put into folders on my iphone.
Does it suck having so many apps? Obviously yes. FFS I have 3 different apps just to access my payroll and benefits at work.
But super easy having a folder called "food" or "sports" or "business" etc... if I want to find something in a hurry.

As my kids have aged out of the guru household, I very rarely eat fast food as well, but I certainly can understand WHY so many people eat fast food (because American's are lazy). Way I figure it I have enough vices, I may as well eat healthy.

Groceries are expensive these days.
It's still much cheaper to make your own healthy (or at least semi-healthy) lunch than to pay $13 - $18 for a crappy unhealthy and poor low quality burger and fries and large Coke. If you want to complain about the costs of eating out, laziness isn't really a valid excuse to eat at McDonald's.

Single dad with a teenage boy, daughter in college - we order fast food sometimes. Thursday nights are boneless wing night 2-3x month. BOGO - total of 30 with tax and tip for under $23. Chipotle order saved - 2 entrees 20.99 and ready in 10 minutes. Large soda and medium fries for $1.09 on Fridays thru McDs app.

Apps are fantastic - regularly use Chipotle, BW3, Taco Bell, McDonalds. No ordering Into a speaker, less wait times, little to no tip.

I'm certainly not making any excuses to eat at McDonalds, I was simply passing along an observation. I have an 18 year old and 23 year old that both eat out a majority of their lunches instead of brown bagging it.
I make my lunch every single day. I've ate at my desk > 95% of the time over the past 5+ years. I haven't ate at McDonalds in over 10 years. Now the fact I don't eat red meat probably plays a part. But I also remember a time when I was younger and in college. I used to eat at Wendy's a good 2-3x per week as I could get a jr bacon cheeseburger, biggie fries and a drink for $3.25. I was on a budget and could have made lunches cheaper, but I was lazy.

I remember when you could get a hamburger, small fries, and a small coke for less than a dollar at McDonalds and it wasn’t 50 years ago either. Well, maybe 30 or 40 :)

I don't do it much, but the spicy chicken sandwich and the waffle fries from chick fil a for 10 bucks is a delicious value. That and in and out when I'm out west are the only two fast food places I find desirable.

Nothing wrong with meat. In fact, I offer it to a vegan friend at get togethers all the time.

Value? To me $10 bucks for a fast food meal is absurd.

Its all relative. I can't get something better for less so to me that's a good value. I personally don't have a problem with food prices in general though as I also get raises at work that more than make up for the part of day to day costs that are disproportionately affected by inflation.

another thing people are missing when they lament how much cheaper things used to be. You know what else was "cheaper" back then?, the wages you earned.

Somehow, people are still able to post pictures of their families in Hawaii or their brand new Mercedes SUVs - while also posting stupid memes complaining about a dozen eggs costing $8 (when even the high end eggs aren't even close to that).

When I look at how hard it is for young people to be independent these days, making between $17 and $20 per hour and paying ridiculous cost for an apartment, paying a half hour or more of their current wage for a fast food meal isn’t helping their cause.

I was only talking from my own perspective about the value of chick fil a compared with other similar takeout alternatives. I'd probably have some advice for those young people but if they're anything like my teenage kids, they ain't gonna be listening. LOL.

Willing to bet inflation especially on food prices is outpacing wage increases. I posted an example awhile back in another thread that a bottle of Hellmans squeeze mayo has gone from $5 to $7 in the last 3 years. Maybe if I get bored I’ll go pull all of my old Kroger receipts for every day purchases

I'm not saying its a 100% direct correlation, but I think the point is clear.

Also people are forgetting about the COVID issues making the cost of things a little out of whack, and that's moving back slightly (although the horses aren't going back in that barn now).

I guess the main point is people seem to feel entitled about eating out at nice restaurants when that should be considered a luxury. If it's too expensive for you, stay home. It's the same as sporting events or concerts - if you think paying $300 for nosebleed seats to see Taylor Swift is insane, then stay home a stream her songs for free. Personally I love live music, but I've chosen to see smaller bands at smaller venues rather than paying what I think is an outrageous price for a legacy act like the Stones.

look i have a standing 720 tee time on sundays, a number 2 meal from mcdonald’s is a must on the way up at 615. the only real decision is a powerade and coffee or just a coffee 😡

I remember when you could get a hamburger, small fries, and a small coke for less than a dollar at McDonalds and it wasn’t 50 years ago either. Well, maybe 30 or 40 :)
Wasn’t that long ago that a double cheeseburger was on the dollar menu
I don’t go often but when I do, the Big Mac has gotten so expensive, I order a McDouble with no ketchup or mustard and add Big Mac sauce. Basically the same thing as a Big Mac minus a piece of bread a couple of bucks cheaper.

After reading this, I’m a cheap old man!

You can get big mac sauce separately?

Remember also, construction and day labour for lunch. What is interesting is my last 2 interactions with contractor types. Once in Italy (italians) and the other in the US (mexicans). In both instances, they took lunch at my house outside and brought their own food. The U.S. group brought a microwave, in fact and i have seen this more and more here. These guys used to run to grab chinese lunch or fast food or even a taco truck. Locally, the taco truck is now $3-$4 for one small street taco.....it was $1.50 as recently as 2 years ago. There is a difference between a $5 and $15 lunch out daily.

I've mentioned this here before, but my treat has always been an iced coffee at starbucks. usually a grande. i remember when i first moved to NC in aught 7 it was around 1.95. gradually flew thru the $2 range. last 2 years it went high $3- and i moved to iced americano, which was about $.30 cheaper. the americano is essentially 3 espresso shots, ice and water. it was around $3.95 and then moved to $4.10 before xmas. I came back from italy in january and ordered the grande iced americano and it was now $4.60.............$4.25 and .35 tax. i just make it at home now. But i see people ordering and getting these large drinks and some of them are in the $6-$7 range. That's an awful lot for a half cup of ice and sugar.

You'll take my bottled water, paper plates, paper towels and zip lock bags from my cold dead hands.
My wife yells at me if I don’t recycle. I smile as I heed her wishes, but when she isn’t looking……..

jk

….but when you’re out and there is only a single trash can….weii, I’ll drop that can in that trash can.

@General Malaise we don't have bottles of water in the house either. It's dumb to have them anyway - our tap water is delicious
funny thing about bottled water..........i am a buyer. i like to add in the arnold palmer packet (also a restaurant trick for old men). they have gone away from selling only spring water to also selling "purified water" at the same price or higher. filtering your tap water and selling it to me seems like something i can do.

Laziness for sure but a lot of these folks are addicted to the food. It's made that way for a reason.

You don't need to filter your tap water. I mean, there are some places in the US where you need to on occasion, but like 99% of tap water is just fine to drink

talk about being addicted, imagine smoking a pack or 2 a day. what is a pack now, $9? more? crazy high prices and you're killing yourself.

You guys know you can make folders and put multiple apps in them right?
Seems to be a PITA on an iPhone, though I did manage once to make a folder called "Stuff". It has one app in it (Spotify). Could probably spend some time learning how to get more in there, but not yet all that motivated to do so. Academically, I know it's easy and all.

One thing that surprised me is that I did something once to make the Notes app icon four times bigger than normal. It's still that way now -- no idea how I did it or how to get it back. Yes, I could Google it and figure it all out. No, I don't feel like it just yet.

Might be that laziness we're talking about, just manifest elsewhere. Inertia is a heckuva drug.

Not cool man. Disposal of trash is a huge concern
I’m joking. But I do ignore it if I’m out and all that is available is a single trash can. I’m not carrying that empty plastic bottle around until I find a recycling can.

in NYC, it was $17 a few years back. Sure it's close to $20 now.

If you think about it, fast food is killing you much like cigarettes. Trade in lung cancer for diabetes and obesity related diseases.

I'm sure she has her reasons, but if that's important to her, put her in charge of the dishes.

Can you tell her for me? :oldunsure:
Sure, next time I'm in Oregon. Until then, maybe these would help? I don't want it to seem like I'm worried about it too much, but I would be miserable without paper plates.
