Screw You Kimmell (1 Viewer)

I thought it was funny. FF is overwhelming in its popularity and it is far and away may favorite hobby...but to suggest it is any different than a bunch of high school dorks in costume playing D&D or Star Wars geeks waiting for days in line in costume is wrong.

gato - the NFL has NO control over what comedy comes out of Kimmel's mouth.

Seriously, we need to back away from FF sometimes and gain some perspective (like I'm one to talk).
My perspective is that the millions of people who play FF (including you and me) are paying customers of the NFL and the companies that sponsor ABC. Whatever business you're in, you don't ridicule your customer base. Hell, you don't ridicule even potential customers. That's just plain dumb. Tell me I'm wrong.
you are wrong - ABC/ESPN get their money from advertisers and from cable co.s - not from the NFL.They PAY the NFL to broadcast their games.

You may not ever watch Kimmel again, but I sincerelty doubt you will boycott an NFL game on ABC just b/c of that comedy schtick.

FF players are NOT ABC's customers. we happen to be NFL fans who also play a game based on the NFL.

Finally - this was KIMMELL doing SCHTICK not the "voice of ABC" dissing FF

Seriously, guys, lighten up. It's one thing to diss Kimmel for this - quite another to think that anything he has to say in a comedy bit at halftime of an NFL game affects the NFL's attitude towards FF or ABC's bottom line.
You're so wrong on so many counts, I'm just going to let it go. Ignorance is bliss.

How can fantasy football people be dorks, geeks and nerds? The majority of people on this board makes 6-figures, drive Porche's, bench press 400lbs, and have supermodel girlfriends/wifes.

ok - tell me what I'm missing.i told you why you were wrong in detail - just saying I'm wrong doesn't make you right. Tell me what in the above statement was "wrong" on ANY level.

I have the feeling you won'tbe able to explain why ABC should care about FF, or how the NFL would be able to control Kimmel's mouth when he is employed by ABC - but please explain it to me if I'm so ig'nant.

I may be a geek :nerd: and that doesn't bother me and even the fact that Kimmel had to rip on fantasy players when there where much better things to talk about. BUt I fall on the side of the people that are saying it's not a good thing to rip on a large portion of your fan base during your broadcast because you are bound to piss some of them off. Also Fantasy Football does affect the amount of people who watch Monday night football or any other football game. I bet all over the country there are people who watch this game 1. Because it is the 1st game of the season and 2. Because they have ( or their opponent has fantasy players in the game). How many times have you as players found yourself watching a game that you normally have no interest in or has become a blowout yet you watch for fantasy football reasons. So to say it doesn't affect the bottom line is jut incorrect. The more people watching the more you can charge for the commercials.PS Who takes 9 hours to draft anymore what are they drafting 50 rounds ?Why I am a geek: I play fanatasy football, On-line Computer games and Played D&D in my past and would play again if I had the right group and work in the IT feild. But I have a life I coach Little League and T-Ball and Play softball and raquetball and lift weights. Being a Geek is actually a cool thing when you are an adult.

No big deal. Learn to laugh at yourself. Fantasy football is fun, but it is kind of dorky. I'll admit it. I just don't care.
Yeah. It's about being secure with who you are. If you are, no amount of dorky behavior should make you change how you enjoy life. Oh, and Jimmy Kimmel just sucks at fantasy football. That's why he's bashing it.

You may not ever watch Kimmel again, but I sincerelty doubt you will boycott an NFL game on ABC just b/c of that comedy schtick.

You're right - I won't watch Kimmel again, which means that whatever businesses advertise during that segment won't be seen by me or anyone else that feels the same way. And since the fantasy football community mirrors the advertisers most desired demographic (males - ages 18 to 35), that isn't too smart.

FF players are NOT ABC's customers. we happen to be NFL fans who also play a game based on the NFL.

We are viewers and the network cares because ratings = advertising revenue. Ever heard of Nielsen? They wouldn't measure it if they didn't care what we think. Not to mention the fact that ABC is owned by Disney and I'm sure you've purchased something from them during your lifetime. Yes, guess you ARE a customer.

Finally - this was KIMMELL doing SCHTICK not the "voice of ABC" dissing FF

Wrong again. Anybody who is on the air speaks for the network whether they say so or not. Ask Jimmy "the Greek", Gary McCord, or Ted Koppel - they'll enlighten you on this subject.

Fantasy football is the equivalent of middle school Pokemon and high school Dungeons and Dragons. I've never played those two, but I could see the the relationship of saying:"My Tom Brady beat your Kerry Collins this week." as the same as "My three headed ogre beat your pikachu."Neither actually happened except in our own minds. Learn to laugh at ourselves as we play with our invisible friends.

good points - buit you still haven't proven me "wrong" or "ignorant"ABC is not targetting FF players - they are targetting NFL fans. Overall, they could care less if they turn off FF fans.

They had Deninis Miller calling plays - people will watch b/c it is the NFL -regardless of the talking heads - and FF fans will watch as welll.

Sorry Gato but you calling me "ignorant" was WAY overboard.

I definitely didn't take offense to his comments (as I fly cross country to play FF), but they just weren't plain funny. Was there any line in there that made anyone actually laugh?

You're right Marc. I was not being excellent to you and your feelings are obviously hurt. How can I make it up to you? Would you like a cookie?

As someone who grew up watching soccer (i'm probably the only soccer fan on these boards) I can offer you this advice:Deal with it!! Enjoy your hobby, and stop caring about what other people think or what they say about it.

I have come to realize that anyone that states you are a geek(or other word) if you participate in fantasy football only do so because they know they would not be able to come close to doing well at it.
If that's true then all of you's a buncha sex geeks.

It's funny because it's true and the only ones who could have been in on the joke are the guys who play Fantasy.Me thinks many of you doth protest too much.

lighten up francis.

it was schtick.
It is interesting though that the NFL's half time entertainment would be a joke on a very large group of its fan base.
Don't know about that, I would bet there are WAY more people who watch that aren't in fantasy football. At least I know tons more people who won't play fantasy sports but watch football religiously.
I didn't say the largest group. Just a very large group and its growing all the time. I will also challenge that alot of those people you say wont play fantasy sports are actually people who have not played fantasy sports and will get into it in the future. And I challenge you that everyone of those people is friends with someone who plays fantasy sports.
We are mostly gambling on ourselves. It Gambling. The more you think of it, the more you realize it. Vegas and Internet gambling on FF is now growing as much as the hobby itself. All of us in Cash leagues are gambling on ourselves. People who follow the NFL religiously are mostly gamblers and are giving there money away. Kimmell should have said all gamblers are idiots. That would have covered about 90% of the die hard NFL fans. If he had said that he would have been right because gamblers, almost all, are idiots.(for giving there money away, that is.)

Except for the bench press, that's a pretty good description of geeks and nerds in the real world. Once you're out of high school, being a brainy little geek is pretty rewarding.

I'm just as geeky as the next guy about Fantasy Football, but I don't define myself by what some comedian has to say about it. Nor am I going to validate his "schtick" by starting some rant about how we should boycott this or protest that. Just as William Shatner chastised the Star Wars geeks on Saturday Night Live, I really believe that the intended message of last night's routine was this:It's just a game! If you let it rule your existence, then you really should step back and put it into perspective. Don't take it so seriously! If you do that, then you might actually see the humor in the routine.

I play fantasy football for the entertainment value. I watch the NFL for the same entertainment value. Some would say we are geeks for either act.I make fun of the "geeks" who come to Indy in droves to play Star Wars at our convention center. I guess I have a new perspective and should let them have their fun. Considering they probably laugh at my geekness of FF.With all of this said, I am rarely amused by Kimmel and grow less entertained by MNF. I mean, the horse trailer, Maroon 5, and Jimmy Kimmel wore me out last night!

Agree Completely.... why would the NFL put this guy on.... we're (fantasy players) becoming a big part of thier bread and butter... :( Idiot indeed.
Perhaps they thought we had a sense of humor. How silly of them.

When are people going to understand that the NFL and ABC take our viewership for granted. All the non-football material (e.g.,pre-game, half-time, announcers) on Monday Night Football is geared toward drawing in the more casual fans.

I can't believe I missed it. Next time I'll wait until halftime is over to put on my Warf costume.

I also believe agree that there are more football fans who don't play fantasy than do play. And I can't imagine that any of them would "get" /appreciate what Kimmel was saying. If you play, you can chuckle at a couple of the stereotypye lines, like sending smack e-mails or agonizing over 3rd string receivers. If you don't, I think you'd just be scratching your head saying wtf is he talking about?

I missed the Kimmel shtick, but really - if he said we are geeks, and the result is a 2+ page thread on a message board about how he is insulting us, then we are far more geekish than Kimmel could possibly have insinuated.

Why I am a geek: I play fanatasy football, On-line Computer games and Played D&D in my past and would play again if I had the right group and work in the IT feild.

But I have a life I coach Little League and T-Ball and Play softball and raquetball and lift weights. Being a Geek is actually a cool thing when you are an adult.
You, my friend, are exactly the kind of fantasy football freak that he was talking about, and someone who gives us casual fantasy footballers a bad nameD&D??

Raquetball??

Croquet??

Badminton??

You, my friend, need to take some time off, go to Vegas , and get you some poontang. Seriously, before it's too late

And believe me, your lifestyle is far from cool

It was funny - lighten up a bit. He probably plays ff too and was laughing at himself and his buddies also.I laughed when he made the comment about not being able to get to sleep while you try to figure out which 3rd WF to substitute for Randy Moss on his bye week. How dead on is that? Don't believe me? Check out the Assistant Coaches forum some time...Two of my kids called to laugh and ask if my team is the "Shermanators" and joke around with me on it. We had a chuckle and then I got back to the game.My Raiders lost and I still enjoyed the evening. Football is back, how can you gripe about anything? :D

lol, i forgot about the shermanator line. the 3rd string wr was the one that stuck with me. :excited: he has to play to come up with these things.but, like i said above, i can't believe all of the people who don't play would get it or find it funny. seems like a poor topic for the slot.

EXACTLYWhen you are a geek and can laugh about it you are a loveable geek. When you are a geek and cry about being called a geek then you are just.

Well...an annoying geek.

Lighten up people, we are fantasy geeks, enjoy it!

He seems happy, you sound bitter.

good point, he was the sports guy at KROQ radio here in L.A. he used to talk about his leagues all the time on the air

So there you have it. He was doing a "tongue-in-cheek" bit making fun of himself, leaguemates and all the rest of us. Get over it!
