Shark Pool Mock #1 (1 Viewer)

That is what I thought, Andy, just asking because STL 1.13 listed as avail?

I can take DAL if needed, last years rules said it was OK to take one or two teams. Let somebody else have them if we have enough timely volunteers.
Hadn't thought about that. I copied the 1st round order for the signup but changed the Indy pick and not Washington.

Just a handfull of teams remaining:

2 Washington
16 Dallas
23 Kansas City
26 Indianapolis
27 New Orleans
31 Denver
32 Seattle

The high picks can do their wheeling and dealing and start picking whenever they're ready tomorrow morning.

Remember, there are no rights/wrongs here. Mock drafting is just to discuss the players coming into the league, how they'd fit with certain teams, and what teams need most and/or what their management usually does in the draft.

Bob in case you have me on ignore, please squash that for the good of this draft. I'll of course not bring up anything besides this stuff. Let's get a deal done.

I've never put anybody on ignore, plus you are one of my favorite posters. I'm confident in saying my respect is commensurate with yours. :) I didn't see an offer.

* MIA way too far from the 1.2, but would be ideal for the 1.13.

edit/add - now I see it, I missed it because it wasn't at the top of the stack (I had just sent a PM regarding the 1.2 pick). I'll PM you.

** Do I get three guesses on the position being moved up for?

OL, OL and OL.

It will be interesting to see who is available when the Raiders come up with the 5th pick. There are several players I like at that spot.

With the first pick of the 2014 NFL draft, the Houston Texans select Jadeveon Clowney.

My logic behind the pick breaks down as follows:

Clowney is going to have a monster combine. There is no questioning he is a physical freak, he has been since HS. My key question behind him is his motivation after he gets paid, however I feel JJ Watt is the best thing that could happen to him. JJ will be pushing him and making him better. This will give the Texans a nearly unstoppable DE combo. I actively tried to trade this pick and move back, but couldn't find the right value for the pick. I'm pretty confident if this mock was post combine, I'd get the value I want.

If anyone is interested in trading for his rights, please send an offer.

ETA: I like Bridgewater here, but I think Cowney ends up number 1.

1.2 - STL TAKES AUBURN LT GREG ROBINSON

Fisher hasn't taken a first round OL, but has never had the 1.2 (three top 10 picks, took McNair, VY and Pacman), and he inherited Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews and solid LT Brad Hopkins. GM Floyd Reece ran the HOU/TEN drafts. The history of Snead/Fisher is only two drafts deep. Jake Matthews is the son of Bruce, or course, but both the HC and GM have ties to Auburn (Fisher's son played with Robinson, and Snead is an alumni).

There was an offer to trade down (which I think is more likely to happen than not), but it was lower than I felt would guarantee getting a player from my short list, and less than I was looking for (offer was a 2015 first or 2014 second, and boring getting an imaginary 2015 first :) - I think if STL moves down as far as this proposed move, they will get more). If I knew I could get LT Matthews at that spot later, would have pulled the trigger.

SERIOUS consideration was given to Watkins. But if the OL is a mess, he would be a moot point (see how human Manning looked against SEA, and STL has to play three top 10 defenses six X a year). Long returning from a torn ACL and showed signs of breaking down in MIA, Saffold was an ordinary, oft-injured OT that flashed signs of being a Pro Bowl guard but more likely than not to take the money and run in free agency, RT Barksdale is solid if not special but only signed through 2014, they have nothing at LG, center Wells has missed nearly half of his games since 2012, and with RG Dahl (injured in 2013 - detecting a pattern here?) is about 33 and not the future. Robinson could serve four functions - be a dominant, Pro Bowl-level interim guard (BAL Hall of Famer Ogden began inside), ditto as a starting RT, injury insurance and heir apparent for Long at LT. Auburn's scheme leaves him somewhat of an unknown commodity in pass pro, but this isn't Jason Smith 2.0, who was a former TE conversion. Robinson has better feet, is a natural knee bender, more physical by temperment and plays angry but under control. SEA and SF have brutal defenses, and sometimes you need to fight fire with fire. It is scary to think he could get bigger and stronger. The thought of him blowing up SEA and SF defenders for the next decade is appealing.

Watkins would be awesome (maybe that is the actual STL pick?), but I think existing talent, like Austin, Cook, Bailey, Givens and Quick can be better leveraged by infusing the OL with much needed talent, youth and depth. Taking a WR so high could be overkill given the direction of the run-centric offense. Robinson is a better fit in that context and will elevate RB Stacy as well as the receiving weapons. He is a tone setter, and his physicality, toughness, nastiness and intensity could have a ripple through, cascade effect throughout the offense and team as a whole.

* I wouldn't have taken Clowney even if available. New DC Williams presence alone improves that side of the ball. They could be a few players away from being top 10 or better, and those players don't need to be taken this high. A better offense can help the defense, too (by keeping them off the field, helping with field position, playing with a lead could make the opposing offense more one dimensional and position their DL to make a greater impact with even more big plays, etc.).

Huh, no one wanted to move up for a QB Bob? I thought for sure we'd see a trade up to get Bridewater. I'm almost certain we'd have seen a trade if Clowney was there.

Okay, FUBAR is going to take Kansas City, lsutigers take New Orleans, and I'm going to take Denver.

Anyone else want to take one of the remaining teams as a 2nd (Washington/Dallas/Indy/Seattle)? We could always do it as a board consensus too...

Maybe we shouldn't have started this on Prez's Day (what a dumb holiday, BTW).

WTH, I'll try Indy. I've watched them enough this year to know where the holes are.

*edit* If any Colts fans decide they want the spot, I'm cool with that and I'll just grab Seattle.

With the 3rd pick in the 2014 draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

This is an ideal position for the Jags to be in, with both Bridgewater and Manziel available at 1.3. I could have gone with either one and been happy, as both have some questions surrounding them. The Jags are hoping that Bridgewater can be the guy that finally fills thier longstanding quarterback void. I did give some consideration to Mack here and would have looked hard at Clowney had he been available, but in today's NFL, if you have no quarterback, then you have nothing. Jaguars fans have patientiently waited for a franchise quarterback to come to this city. Here's hoping that Bridgewater is that guy.

I love Bridgewater, I like him a lot for Houston, but I just think they end up going Clowney.

This would be a HR if he falls to 3.

The Cleveland Browns have traded their 1.04 pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

(Browns give their 1.04 and 3.7 picks for 1.7 and 2.6)

With the 4th pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Johnny Manziel.

I tried to trade up to the 2nd pick so I could draft Bridgewater, but I'd still be ecstatic getting Manziel here. Obviously, I'm not sold on Glennon, and if we were able to trade players, I'd immediately be looking to trade him for a 3rd round pick.

I expect the Bucs to sign a DE in free agency (probably Jared Allen), and getting Allen and Manziel would be huge steps in turning the Bucs into a legit playoff contender.

I don't see anyway the Bucs trade up to get a QB in the real draft - but this is your mock so not saying you shouldn't have, just commenting on what I think will happen.

I don't disagree with you. I don't expect this to happen either, it's just what I would do.

I'll take Seattle if you don't want a 2nd team. Not a Seattle fan, but it's the only spot left. But if there IS a Seattle fan who wants it, they can have it.

You're the new Seattle GM.

We still need someone to pick for the Washington Nicknametobedeterminedatalaterdate's.
