This is such a great narrative but it's total bull####. Plots of the prequels are convoluted disasters that bored my kids to tears.

True but I don't think Georges ep3 was directed towards kids. Maybe dumb adults. "He killed kids, see he's evil."

I was 10 when the 1st Star Wars came out. It's like they translated whole swaths of my imagination to a movie, but better. It was unbelievable. The spotty acting, the hokey dialog, Alec Guiness's bad rug - didn't matter. The audio/visual experience was unparalleled for its time as well. People poke holes in it today compared to movies that are made now almost 40 years later (and I still like many of the practical effects from the 1st three better than much CGI that gets foisted on us today) - but it basically dictated how sci-fi/action movies would be made (for better and worse) from that point forward. Everyone still has an inner kid - and this thing tapped into that for so many people at that time.

For comparison's sake, take a look at Logan's Run (from 1976, released basically 1 year prior to Star Wars). That was the sci-fi movie milleu people were walking into Star Wars from - as a result it definitely blew everyone away.

Let's put it this way, in my neck of the woods here in NW PA, a member of ISIS showing up would stick out like a sore thumb. This county is 99% white.

 
Notes-

UK reviews are absolutely gushing. 5 stars all the way. One reviewer admitted to crying 3 times during the film.

US reviews are very positive, but with some reservations.

Overall, I think we're in for a real treat.

I must have seen Star Wars in the theater 7-8 times? I lost count. It was a $1.50 to see a movie back then. I had my dad take me 3 straight Saturdays, my mom then took me 2 straight Saturdays and my buddy and I went alone 2 times on a Saturday riding our bikes to the the Surf movie theater on 73rd and collins ave in Miami Beach. This was well before the multi-plex generation.

It was a huge part of my childhood. I remember waiting on a half mile long line to see Empire Strikes Back. I was blown away by the Battle on Hoth. One of the great movie experiences I ever had in a theater.

This new film looks like it can recapture a piece of my childhood. Unlike the prequels which did not tap into that one iota (although I enjoyed them).

One thing I hope and pray for is a blue ray release of the original trilogy in it's original form. Please for the love of all that is holy can we get the films the way they were shown in theaters in 77, 80 and 83 on blue ray? Not the ridiculous CGI infused crap Lucas did in 97?

I'm sick of this argument, tbh. The prequels are flat out boring. Phantom Menace doesn't need to exist, actually. There is a reason all of the "Recommended Viewing Order" topics skip it completely. The OT had their faults...Luke acting in ANH was campy. Graphics obviously are dated, some people hated the ewoks...but the difference is the OT was entertaining, and engrossing, and fun. The prequels were a political lecture interrupted by soulless lightsaber battles.

Is this a possibility with the purchase by Disney, or are the old ones stuck where they are and still controlled by Lucas? Hell, he is probably tinkering on one right now.

 
They are all owned by fox still. They go to Disney in 2020, save for the original. That's with fox forever unless they decide to sell it back to Disney.

Look for the Despecialized Edition. Can't remember if it was mentioned in here but a group of fans have been working tirelessly with multiple sources to convert the original film viewing into 1080p.

It's a free download and they urge you only to download if you bought the blu Ray (to stay within fair use). Otherwise, laser disc and VHS are the only methods to get the originals anymore.

I have the nice black collectors box VHS THX remaster of the original trilogy in it's original uncut form. I have watched them on VHS in the past....but put away the VCR for good 5 years ago.

Seriously the demand for it is there. I gotta believe it will be re-released in the near future and a partnership between Disney and Fox should be able to be worked out.

I know you can find them on DVD and presented in letterbox format (and I knew I should have bought them when they came out but did not). Now you see that set fetching 100 bucks plus on Ebay etc. That's crazy for an up-scaled DVD version in letter box (not even anamorphic widescreen).

And all those are is a rip of the laser disc. Lucasfilms still insists the originals are beyond repair.

:shrug: My oldest kid loved Phantom Menace when it came out.

 
I went ahead and read a spoiler thread. I'm going with my kids Saturday and wanted to know what to watch for. Plus I'm as interested in the moviemaking aspects (acting, visuals, etc) as the plot itself.

I won't give details, but...

overall I'm already disappointed in the story line. They do a few things I was hoping they wouldn't, it seems like the writers got lazy.

I believe it is underrated. Sure there are things we would tweak about all of the episodes(sans the perfection of Empire) but overall I thought it was terrific. More Darth Maul and less Jar Jar would have been nice, but I liked it.

it's not quite that bad but close enough to warrant conversation.
 
God all these glowing reviews are getting me super excited!!!

Going tomorrow night to see it in 3d. Too bad my wife is off this week (she works nights), I should really be re-watching at least the originals this week.

in the plot, assuming the writer wasn't embellishing, yes.

 
Watched 1, 2, and 3 with the kids (9 & 7) over the weekend.

Going to watch 4 tomorrow night and hopefully 5 & 6 in a Friday night double feature.

Tickets to see 7 Saturday at 4:00 (after kids' games but before nighttime craziness) in 3-D at local theater with recliners.

Then getting paid to see it again at another local theater in 3-D again on Sunday. :pickle:

I'm not clicking on your spoiler, Fubar, but the plot of this movie is likely to be disappointing if you just read it in a script.

The plot of the original Star Wars isn't all that deep. Young guy meets old man, learns about an ancient religion, uses that religion to destroy a huge spaceship and deal a relatively hurtful blow to an empire.

But it's everything else that made Star Wars good. The music, the characters, the light sabers and the overall feel of the movie.

And word is this one follows a similar script. I believe they made this first one very similar to the original to get their legions of fans back on board quickly. IMO I think this film will feel la lot like the '77 film(obvious from trailers) with new faces to carry on the torch.

I would bet that probably 9 out of 10 folks will love this coming out of theater and a few snobs myself perhaps included will like it but perhaps feel like we have seen it before.

Mad Max really hit it out of the park on the reboot, I hope this one even if its a carbon copy gets us to the next part of this in one piece. The whole Luke angle seems obvious but this thread is not for spoilers, more as a pep rally so I'll stop there.

 
Only read a handful of reviews so far but from what it sounds like both Daisy Ridley and Harrison Ford have hit it out of the park performance wise with Boyega legging out a Triple. Starting to get very excited to see this.

A few others I've read said as good as that trio is they thought Driver was even better.

 
So far 146 positive reviews, only 6 negative reviews and quite honestly most of the super critical ones actually said it was well made. Is this a spoiler if I say that

97% on the RT site...most tent pole films you would be happy to just clear the 60 mark. I thought 80+ would be good but wow.

I'm guessing the 6 negative reviews are people like this one friend I have from high school. He's the guy who complains about EVERY movie being made today. When they announced JJ was doing the movies, he declared that they would be horrible and has posted at least one thing a day on FB talking about how bad it was going to be. Guy was fun back in the day, but he's just become a bitter old man.
