Star Wars Universe (1 Viewer)

That was the last time they made a good mainline Star Wars film.
This is completely inaccurate.
Rogue One would like a word.
Mainline.
The Force Awakens is a better movie than Return of the Jedi. The Last Jedi is also a solid movie
I'm glad you enjoyed those films. This franchise belongs to people like you now, and I'm glad it's giving you pleasure.

Man I'm sorry/not sorry - they are just awful movies. If they didn't have a Star Wars skin around them more people would dislike them.

I loved Force Awakens. No it wasn’t that original but it felt just like Star Wars to me. I love that movie. When I was in the theater I felt like a kid watching Star Wars again. That counts for something for me!

Last Jedi I can hear the arguments on - that middle act was really bland and pointless but I really liked everything else around it.

I'm just teasing a little. There's plenty of movies I enjoy that make people wonder about me.

Force Awakens would have been fine if it wasn't insanely derivative of the original films. There's a reason it felt like watching star wars again. I choose not to engage on LJ.

Yea discussion is always good. I definitely see the sides of not liking 8 and 9. 7 just really worked for me.

Yea but I liked the new characters and seeing Han and Leia again after 35 years and it was like just having a favorite meal again. I’m ok with that. Not everything has to be original. Plus they went somewhat original on Last Jedi and people hated it anyways.

I understand the perspective, because I walked out of the movie thinking the same thing until I gave it some further reflection. Yes, the first two movies were wild swings on the pendulum of originality.

I don't dislike Force Awakens as some do, I didn't think it was a bad movie, but the take that it is better than any of the originals is...... well..... a strong stance for sure.

When we were making the prequels, George said multiple times that “these movies are for kids”. So us old dudes not liking them didn’t matter to him. He was aiming for the same age demographic that the original trilogy was. Heck, he even had his young-at-the-time son, Jett, sit in on weekly reviews with him occasionally to see what he thought was cool or not.

George Lucas
Son, I'm finally moving forward with the prequals but want to be sure they're still fun for children. What are the kids looking for in entertainment these days?

George's Son
How about a dispute revolving around the taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems?

George Lucas
That's very... specific. You sure this will resonate with eight year old's?

George's Son
Also, it's all about the midichlorian count now, 'kay? We really need to drive home that Jedi have a median midichloian count of 12,350.

George Lucas
I mean, I didn't realize how sophisticated the younger generation is these days.

I was talking more about the fart jokes. Political drama and stiff dialog was all George.

Being old doesn't change your ability to recognize that Empire is simply a better class of movie than Attack of Clones. No idea why you think age matters here.

One set of films features Harrison Ford in an iconic role. The other features Jar Jar Binks and the worst screen performance of Samuel L. Jackson's career. But saying one is better than the other is probably just my old white guy side coming through. Just like how The Hobbit was every bit as good as Lord of the Rings, and how Godfather 3 fleshed out the world that had only been hinted at in the first two films. I should read the room.

I agree that Last Jedi felt like Star Wars again. But huge whiff on redoing the Episode 4 story and HUGE HUGE whiff on going right past the New Republic to The Empire is a thing again and seemingly just as powerful as they ever were, but now they're the "New Order". Huge whiff.

Huge. Huge.

Whiff.

Did I say huge whiff?

Not sure what metric you are using for "whiff"

But, it looks like the final Trilogy made about $3B in profits. ~$4B in gross, and $1B in budget.

And, "remaking" Episode 4 - nearly 40 years after the original, is hardly a bad idea...bringing that updated story to new generations of viewers.

Sometimes I get the impression that "Star Wars Guys" think the only path for Star Wars is to continue to appeal to their sense of right/wrong good/bad - from the 1970's...

Again, people say stuff like this as if it's self-evidently bad. Why?

Obviously you're correct that SW was originally set in a world in which the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. The Empire is very obviously The Third Reich in space. But Darth Vader gets a little redemption at the end of Episode 6, so even then it's not like it's just literally black and white -- there's still scope for personal growth. But I agree that the morality system is pretty straightforward.

So? How many more shows do we need that feature a morally ambiguous hero? Or a deranged anti-hero that half the audience comes to cheer for? Does every show need to be Game of Thrones? Does every show need to the The Boys? What's wrong with having some subset of our entertainment being a little less gray? Or are we just too darned sophisticated for that?

And yeah, if you take an IP that was "Jedi good, Empire bad" for six films and suddenly to try to course-correct into a ham-fisted "From my point of view, the Jedi are evil" thing, it's okay for us to point out that you've changed the underlying soul of the product and to have an opinion about that.

Not angry at all, and I don't. The reason I stopped watching Star Wars isn't because I'm old -- I watch tons of new programming -- and it's not because Star Wars got too intellectually sophisticated for me. The quality just dropped off.

My kids, and their friends, love the prequels.
We don’t.

It appeals to their generation and not ours. Simple as that.

Of course I’m generalizing, but, generally speaking, I think the above is true.

The conundrum is that we seem to want more SW content, but with each series the specialness of the SW universe is diluted.
There are two things there....

1st, yes, we want more Star Wars content BUT you have to pace it out. Fish want to eat.... but if you give them too much food they eat themselves to death.

2nd, quality is so very important. The focus, it seems, has not been on developing the best content in a coherent SW Universe but producing as much as you can with creatives that clearly have no love for Star Wars or are even true fans. Outside of Filoni and Favreau it seems like they have had a parade of show runners, directors, writers etc who are more excited about telling their pet project stories within the Star Wars universe than to be a part of the Star Wars universe. I think that is a real and substantive difference. I am sorry, you will never convince me that hiring a writer that had never even seen a single Star Wars movie or show and "thinks there is a dog in it" is a good thing. Real fans can see and feel that lack of respect for them and the universe that they love so it shouldn't be any surprise when they get let down with a ton of stuff that is just sub par.

Kennedy very badly needs to be fired. I would love Filoni to get that role but then I don't want him taken away from content creation because everything he is involved in isi gold.
I'm with you on Kennedy, and Filoni will get the benefit of the doubt from me forever, if for nothing more than the final season of Clone Wars.

But creatives who have no love for SW? Leslye Headland is a huge SW nerd. She wrote SW fan fiction growing up.

And in a room full of writers, they had one person whose job wasn't to develop plot lines, but to say, "Does this thing that the rest of us have written make sense to someone who is experiencing SW for the first time?" I have no idea how anyone views that as a problem.

Cool. Millions of people watch Real Housewives, too. Quality is a thing, and no amount of peer pressure is going to retroactively convince me that the prequels were good actually.

When I hear someone saying they are excited to tell their pet project story in the SW universe rather than being excited to tell a SW story... sorry, you don't love it like I do. I don't care if you wrote fan fiction or not. Your love for something else is the driver here. Fans feel that. Fans react to that. Then all involved dismiss the reactions as being whatever 'ist' they can label them with.

I am sorry, you don't need someone who has never even seen SW to be a writer. Hell, if you cared a tiny little bit, you would actually, I don't know... invest the hour and a half to watch one of them. That will never be ok with me and it shows the absolute disregard and dismissiveness in what Disney has done with a lot of the Star Wars content they have produced.

That means nothing.

There are fans like me that will go and see every SW thing there is. For most of it, watch it several times. I have watched 7-9 several times even though there is so much wrong with them. Why? It isn't because I am a fan of the movies... it is because I am a fan of SW. Disney can't beat that out of me.... no matter how much they seemingly try to. I will keep coming back like a battered wife thinking that the husband will change.

Oh, I think you’re confusing my attempt to explain the lack of appeal of the prequels to Us Gen Xers, with a defense of the quality of the films. I think they stink. And I worked on every single one of them.
