Stella Artois is garbage - Somehow now StarbucksChat (1 Viewer)

It has its place. You're not going to drink 25 St. Bernardus. As far as Euro lagers/pilsners go, I prefer Bavarian or Czech but if I'm at the beach and there's a 12 of Stella around, I'll pound it.

I think the problem is less the beer than the marketing. If you think this is a rich and complex beer because the ad showed you a guy in a tuxedo pouring it, that's on you.

i use stella to clean carbeurators so it has that going for it take that to the horsepower bank brohans

I hate people who generalize beers by saying one is good or bad just because they think it's good or bad.

I personally think IPA's taste like garbage.  ALL IPA's.  But I get that some people like them, so whatever.  Doesn't make it a bad beer, just a beer I don't like.

...and yes, I actually really like Stella, and Corona, and a lot of the other stuff a lot of folks consider garbage.

For some reason, more often than not the Stella in a bottle tastes skunky.  Out of a tap it is much better - only way I'll drink it.

My favorite Belgian beer is Westmalle - a Trappist beer.  I can get it at Costco, so I do that frequently....

Stella used to be one of my preferred options before the craft beer explosion and the only beers on tap were Stella, Bud, Miller, Heineken, Natty, etc.  I don't think I've ordered one in over 10 years though.  I have a bunch of Stella in my house leftover from a party, and my wife criticizes me every time I come home with beer.  I think I need to host another party and just put out the Stella to get rid of it.

Not a fancy beer, but one created to be consumed by the hundreds.

Could not agree more...it's like food...you may think it sucks and I may like it...and we both can be right...one maybe a better quality but that doesn't mean it agrees with what your preference is...I actually work in this industry and I always get a chuckle out of people who somehow feel their choices are superior to everyone else...I have seen a ton of places screw themselves by doing wine or beer lists based on what they like and not what the general public likes (these guys love to impress their friends with their knowledge)...on the flipside I see places that screw themselves by only offering mass-marketed items...they get an attitude that anyone who doesn't like Bud thinks they're too cool...the smartest guys offer it all and cast the biggest consumer net...

Same here, hate IPAs, like Stella on tap. Especially if I'm having more than a few.

What iritates me about Stella bottles, besides it not tasting as good, is they shortchange you half an oz per bottle.

I am betting 99.9% of the people you think are thinking they are drinking good belgian beer are just trying to have a beer.
And 90% of beer snobs regularly drink, bud light, coors light, miller light or the like.

Almost all mass marketed beer is garbage. 1 craft beer is better than 6 regular beers any day.

I do like a Miller Lite Alum Bot when I am watching the marlins, makes me feel like I am at the park.
Perfect example.

It's better than Bud Light, Busch Light or Budweiser...
Agree and in some dive bars and restaurants that don't have many taps and/or haven't heard of craft beer it's the best thing available.

:goodposting:  Not sure there is a beer on earth I wouldn't drink.

As you age Sir Tony it gets a little harder to keep drinking heavy craft beers...unless you are satisfied with 1...I am now but I used to down 6-7 craft beers in a night...I lived down the ally from FO in Santa Monica, the stories I could tell about us closing that place many times.

Likewise, no one cares what you do or don't care about.  It's a message board, we discuss things here.  People voice opinions.  If you don't want that, why are you here?
I'm here to tell beer snobs to shut the #### up.

Garbage is a bit strong as it's better than the average domestic.

Good beer? Of course not. Although I do dig the glass.

I never noticed that!  I will say that Stella on tap >>>> bottles.  Not even close.

I like this. As others have stated some places just have mass produced options. There's a golf course I frequent that only has like three beers on tap and a few can/bottle options. After a round there I go Stella as it's reliable, not heavy and on tap.

Be wary of any beer in clear or green bottles -- sunlight is what "skunks" beer and brown bottles prevent that much better.  For those complaining about "heavy" craft beer or disliking hoppy beer -- just try a different style.  There are plenty of options out there that are light and refreshing without being overly hop forward.  In many cases, craft from a local brewery is better because many styles of beer are much better fresh -- a long journey from the brewery and a long time sitting on a shelf in the store is going to deteriorate most lighter / lower ABV beers and will really hurt hop-forward styles.  As well as the whole "support your locally owned businesses" angle which is important to a lot of folks.  Drink what you like -- but branch out a little and you never know what you'll find.

Nothing wrong with that!    Not sure what age you think I am, but, I've been know to down 8-10 craft beers.  And I've been known to down 8-10 PBRs, or more, too.  I just find it hard to call any beer garbage, because you know, it's still beer.

A tap lineup I see a lot in average bars and restaurants are all the regular "American" beers, the most popular local craft that I don't care as much for, and Stella.  When I see that I usually choose Stella.  Around here it's easy to tell if a restaurant owner is a beer drinker of if they are just checking the box.

Never understood the colored bottles and sunlight theory.  Who the hell stores their beer outside?  And who the hell has beer that's been in storage for very long?

If I was going to bash anything to do with beer it would be the beer companies and the stupid sales gimmicks.  Miller lite's vortex neck, wtf is that?  I have an idea: why not put the vortex on the outside of the neck and market it as a pleasure for women.

I found these two postings back to back to be pretty ironic.  Who the hell shoves a beer bottle up...well...you know...

:P

Maybe that's the issue here. If you don't leave your Stella in the hot sun all day, it's not bad.

I got to drink some Westy 12 on my recent trip to Belgium.  I almost posted in Paddington's thread right after because its the closest I've come to finding god.

Played 9 holes last night and had a cold Stella when finished..tasted pretty good.   But then I really am not too picky about beer or coffee. If the beer is cold and the coffee hot I am good to go.

It is usually skunked by the time you get it.  The type and amount of hops, the color of the glass and the amount of time the beer is exposed to UV light will also be determining factors in the skunkiness of the beer.   It is possible for a beer to turn skunky in minutes.

The problem is even worse for imported beers due to the amount of handling and the time it takes to get here.

It is interesting that Miller actually developed a hop extract that is not susceptible to UV light so their beer never gets skunked even though it is shipped in clear bottles.

Horrible beer but what a great marketing department they must have. A lot of people have the impression that it's an upper echelon beer and pay way too much for this over priced crap.

Even artificial light can skunk a beer so if a Stella has been sitting in the bright lights of a supermarket it can get skunked.

Not a consumer issue, but a major one on the distribution and retail side.  That big diplay right by the windows in the front of the store isn't the best place to grab your sixer of Corona or Modela.

And in many stores, stuff sits on the shelves FOREVER.  That can actually be a bonus for some bottle conditioned styles or big stouts, but you should probably avoid the year old + bottles of Lagunitas Sucks, for one typically egregious example.

I've been told it's the Keystone of Belgium.

As mentioned upthread, Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus Abt 12 are available in pretty much any decent beer store, and outstanding, if you want the quad fix without hopping on a plane.

I never got the beer snob thing.  I like my beer cold and plentiful, my whiskey a single malt and neat.  I like my women brunette, petite and sans bolt-ons.  I like my transportation to be a pickup.  My wings hot and un-breaded.  I take my steaks rare, my ribs smoked, and my chicken with BBQ sauce caramelized onto it.  That said, if presented with things otherwise than my preference I find the good in the variety.  I swear some of you lose all joy in a thing if it does not meet the criteria you lay down, more often than not, to posture in front of others who don't respect their own opinions, more less yours.

There is nothing wrong with a Nestlé's Tollhouse cookie, a Hershey's bar, or a cold PBR.  Mary Ann was hot.  Fireworks on the 4th of July are sweet. You gourmet, designer, hypercritics are a group I will ever understand.

I'm not a beer snob. I enjoy a good Corona or Bud like any other red blooded American. In fact I really like a Kirin with my Thai food.

But the Stella someone left in my beer fridge last weekend was the single worst beer I've had in the last 5 years. Only beer I've ever had that was worse was a Cruz Campo from Spain.
