Dave on FX last night was great. I haven’t watched the show religiously but it’s well written and the season finale with Brad Pitt was top notch. Dude is hilarious.
One of my favorite series on going right now. Big fan and love all the guest stars.
I bet Dave is your second favorite character......
I had a pretty big lol when someone called him Gator recently. The look on his face.."gator??"

Lots of opinions on Ted Lasso. I loved it.
Season 1: Brilliant
Season 2: Pretty Good
Season 3:
  • 1st 3rd of season was bad.
  • 2nd 3rd of season was ok.
  • Final 3rd of season was brilliant. Very satisfying ending.
A lot of very endearing characters. The Sound of Music number in the finale was corny but left me smiling.

Without spoiling, did Succession end well? I read some reports it was headed into GOT territory with it's ending.

I watched the first three episodes and was intrigued but never went back, but I will if it's a really good complete package.
I thought it was the single best ending to any long-running show that I've watched. Obviously most people wouldn't go that far, but it does seem to have been almost universally praised.

Edit: It's definitely not GOT. There is a clear, logical reason why the show ends the way that it does, and that's not just something that people are saying ex post -- you can find people who more or less predicted the exact ending to this show ex ante based on what we knew about the various characters and their motivations. It's also not The Sopranos -- there is no ambiguity about what happened. It's a nice, understated, well-written conclusion. You may or may not like the show, but if it clicks with you, you will not need to worry about being let down by a lazy finale. It's a good one.
I wouldn't go nearly that far, but the ending was very good and made sense. I think the last season was the best of the four.

I also started watching and then gave up...... twice. But seeing the posts on here, I felt I needed to give it another shot. Last episode was easily the best.
That being said, I didn't care much for the ride getting there. I am in the minority though.

The show is hilarious and yeah the cameos never disappoint and often unexpected. Pretty cool it also works as a soundtrack to hear some of his music. Great talent.

I know @El Floppo will give me **** for it, but just an FYI that Suburra is back on Netflix.

Italian crime show that we really, really enjoyed. 3 seasons. In Italian, just watch with subtitles.
Is this the one in Naples or in Rome?

Only morons would like either of them.

Ok.. I kid. They're both fun. The Naples one gets silly quick, but starts great. Neither are top tier by any stretch, but are still decent enough watches. For morons.

Similar situations. I tried twice in Season 1 and haven't watched since. Seemed like a cheesy version of Mad Men mixed with some House of Cards. I hated Billions as well so maybe this one just isn't for me although random friends will always tell me how much I am missing out like it's the second coming of The Wire.

It is way better than The Wire

Chimp Empire is best thing I’ve seen on Netflix in awhile. Documentary directed by James Reed of My Octopus Teacher, and narrated by Mahershala Ali. Brilliant cinematography, and treats the power struggles and territorial disputes like stuff out of Succession or Game of Thrones.

If you like nature documentaries, definitely worth a watch.
Best documentary I've ever seen. Stunning and powerful.

Kind of over Ted Lasso. Watched the first one tonight and it’s just more of the same. I’ll watch the entire season but they are right to finish it.
The biggest fraud of a loved show I can remember in awhile. I watched about half of S1 and coudn't do it anymore. My wife and friends have watched and re-watched. I am not at all surprised to hear that S3 will be the last and that it's seen as garbage. It was always garbage.
I watched the first four episodes on a transatlantic flight, and that was more than enough to convince me never to watch another episode of that show, ever. It may be a perfectly fine television program, but it is the diametrical opposite of the kind of programming I like. I imagine the Venn diagram of people who like Ted Lasso and people who like The Wire is an empty set.
Both great. You missed out!

I just started watching season 1. It seems every episode is the same thing. The son thinks he did something great that his father would be proud of and then the father cuts him down to size and insults him. Rinse and repeat. Ill keep going for now.

My wife and I started watching a while back. I bailed after about four or five episodes of the first season because I hated pretty much every character, and I found myself agitated after every episode. She continued on all the way through the series finale and was a big fan of the show.

Yep, I did the same. I bailed after the softball scene where McCaulkin's character offers one of the staff's kids a bunch of money to hit a home run or whatever it was. Wife wasn't a fan, either.

When I got some downtime and there's nothing current on my queue I'll probably give it another shot.

The Idol succeeded Succession in the HBO Sunday night prestige timeslot.

Yikes, just yikes. It's only going to be six episodes but I don't know if it's even worth a hate-watch.

The Days on Netflix - scary 8 part drama all about the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Pretty intense! ....and amazing what those people had to go through to deal with the problem.

I recommend turning on the English dub, it's not too bad.

I know you probably know this but for the benefit of other people who aren't familiar with Succession, you're supposed to hate that character. And all the other characters, for that matter. It's a well-written and well-acted story involving a bunch of really despicable human beings.

Yep, understood. I'm willing to give it another shot down the line. I gave up during season one and I get that it's since gotten really high critical acclaim. I'll go back into it knowing that there won't be a true protagonist and that the uncomfortable scenes will be paid off at some point.

Yeah I get it. There have definitely been characters in shows I enjoyed that I loved to hate. Joffrey Baratheon comes to mind. Through those first 4-5 episodes of Succession, I just found myself simply hating every character, rather than loving to hate them. And even if I did love to hate them, I’m not sure that a show with a cast comprised entirely of Joffrey Baratheons would appeal to me. In any event, with Succession, I found myself in a more negative place mentally after each episode. And that’s why I checked out. But I get that it’s supposed to be a cast of depiscable people backbiting each other, and that the formula has appeal to some. As mentioned, my wife was hooked.

I wonder if you're like me... Where these type of people are in your professional life too? These are essentially my clients. Well.. the worst of my clients. When I watched the first few.. I went through the same feelings as you, but compounded by it hitting too close to home with those people. Last thing I wanted to do was take those ******** home in the weekend and walk around in their shoes. No gracias, regardless of it being well written and acted.

Ha, I can definitely see why that would be a drag! Actually, I am blessed. While my job is certainly a challenging one, I am blessed to work exclusively for clients who are kind, philanthropic, ethical, and who have a standard of excellence in their own professional dealings that inspires me to work hard during the day and allows me to sleep well at night. It wasn't always that way in my career though, so I definitely get your point.

No worries. Nothing wrong with people not liking Succession. There's so much high-quality stuff out there that there's really not much justification for forcing yourself to watch something that doesn't connect with you for whatever reason.

re: The Wire, I missed the boat when it originally aired. Have always heard rave reviews about it, so about 10 years ago, the wife and I set out to watch it. We were incredibly bored through the first two episodes and ended up watching something else. I'm guessing I need to revisit since it is widely known as an all-time great. But for fans of the show, do you agree that the first couple episodes were very slow?
I kind of slogged through the first season and a half before it clicked for me, but I now consider it the GOAT show. I think part of it is that it's so damn hard to follow and keep track of all the characters. One thing that helped is that I started reading Alan Sepinwall's recaps of every episode right after watching it, which made it much easier. Also, it's one of those shows where you can't be fiddling with your phone or doing dishes or anything else while you're watching. It demands your full attention. But it's absolutely worth it, IMO

Heading into that time of year where Mrs. Reilly takes my older son off to camp and I'm home for a month with my eight year old, who's generally in bed by 7:30. All of which is to say I will have lots of time over the next month to catch up on all my binge watching. Here's what's currently on my list; what else should I add?
  • The Bear (watched the series premiere and liked it, but never got around to watching the rest)
  • Jury Duty
  • I Think You Should Leave
  • What We Do in the Shadows
  • Love on the Spectrum (both of my kids are autistic, but my wife refuses to watch the show because she views TV as an escape)
  • Gaslit
  • Upload

Finished a couple of series recently.

Jury Duty - 7/10. Obviously living in this world and oftentimes living it in a very real, serious way this show was fun for me with the levity it brought. They couldn't have chosen a better main character (or, shall we say, "mark"). What I didn't really like is how the show really cut out a lot of the trial itself and made it seem like jury duty was some big party when it's really not. I would have liked more of the trial and deliberations and less of the hijinks that seemed force. That said, the main guy is very endearing and the other actors did a really nice job. I'd recommend.

The Last Thing He Told Me - 5.5/10. Started out with an interesting premise but really fell kind of flat once the "secret" or whatever was revealed. The ending was also very dissatisfying and the hyperbolic portrayal of the teenage daughter got old pretty quickly. Plus, as is common with thrillers, the main characters' decision-making were absurdly dumb at time. It's not an awful show if you're in to the Harlan Cobin to borlderine Hallmark type series.

Jury Duty - The best thing about it was the episode length. It was bleh for me. I think the concept is really interesting and could be good but I didn't like the "mark" and it just missed for me. I am not sure why it missed. I just didn't care for it all that much.

James Marsden jumping on a bed to help simulate sex was a pretty funny bit.

Two things I watched recently that I enjoyed:

American Gladiators on ESPN 30 for 30 - 2 part documentary on the American Gladiators, the founding of it and the drama behind the scenes between the founder and his partners, and with the gladiators and a look at where some of them are now. I was a teenager when it first aired so it was both nostalgic and interesting.

Hit and Run - Netflix - An Israeli-American show. A good espionage thriller with a mix of intrigue and whodunnit type things and action/violence. Basically a former Israeli Special Ops soldier turned tour guide's American wife is killed in an apparent Hit and Run, but then layers of the onion get peeled away and it is more than a random hit and run. I don't want to share too much more and give away too many spoilers. Fair warning, it's a mix of several languages so there is subtitles for the non-English parts, which there is a lot of.

Just saw the list of delayed shows due to the writer's strike. WTF are we gonna watch?
Got mentioned in the American Gladiators documentary, but the year AG first got picked up and debuted - writer's strike. The 2008 reboot with Hulk Hogan as the host - writer's strike.

So I guess since history likes repeating itself, we're in store for another AG reboot.

I really enjoyed it. One of the better 30 for 30s. So many parallels to a pro wrestlers life. Definitely feel for the real creator of that show.
