Stuff happening lately that reminds you you're getting older (1 Viewer)

One thing I will say is that my hearing isn't as bad as my family thinks.  So sometimes, I'll just be sitting there watching TV and they'll have conversation near me, talking low, and I can totally hear it.
This.

It's more an inability to filter out nearby noise than it is stone deafness. Like I wrote earlier: running water, chewing something crunchy, the washing machine, etc. ... that kind of stuff will drown out anything you're saying from the next room.

regarding this short term memory thing.. same. though i've always had short term memory issues.  seems to be getting worse as i get older but i feel like it's more a product of my mind skipping from one thing to the other rapid-fire.

not because of any attention deficit problem but because i've got a lot of irons in the fire.

i'll always harken back to a guy i worked with 20+ years ago who was about the age i am now.  he was having these same doubts about his memory, started to wonder if it was early onset alzheimer's/dementia, which made his blood pressure spike, gave him panic attacks and made him think he was having heart troubles.

he came late to work one day after seeing the doctor because he was having trouble sleeping. his mind wasn't quiet. he was getting sick. tired all the time, etc. we talked and he told me how worried he was about dying and not seeing his kids because he ignored his health, etc.

he said after running through all these various tests his numbers checked out. clean bill of health. heart looked good. everything was fine. his doctor told him something like "we see this all the time for men your age... you've got young kids, a busy life, work long hours. you're not catching any breaks. your brain is firing on all cylinders and you're not getting enough sleep... your memory is no worse than it was 20 years ago.. you just have way more to worry about, more to catalog, more to react to. you're fine. cut back on the caffeine, get some sleep and try to slow down."

whenever i kick myself for forgetting something.. i remember that conversation. maybe my memory isn't great but it's more a function of the 93 things i have to do after i leave the office but before i go to bed tonight. i've started making lists. that helps keep me better organized.

and in addition to exercise (which is great for clearing my head), i take walks on the weekends when i wake up.  the quiet time helps me formulate a plan and organize my day. seems to have helped quite a lot the last couple years.

Eyes going. Ears going. Memory going.

#1 though. Kids with half their ### hanging out of their pants. Can't stand it.

Same.

I talk to my boys about sports all the time, and if it isn't a top 1% player in terms of notariety (Jordan, Lebron, Babe Ruth, people like that), I can't think of their name.  I can describe everyone by their team, position, and where the went to college,  where they played previously, but if I have to remember their actual name?  Forget it.
It's annoying and at the tip of my tongue but just can't spit it out.  Frustrating to say the least.

You know the guy who plays shortstop for the Brewers.  Great fielder can't hit a lick but occasionally hits a bomb.  Was pretty clutch in the 2018 NL playoffs where he hit .425 with 3 HR's 11 RBI 6 runs scored and 2 SB.  He's from Venezuela and was the Brewers farm system player of the year in 2016. Arci, Arc, Archie....you know what's his name.

Seriously happens a lot lol.

Mine is more like I know what I'm going to say right up until it's time to say that word.  Then I blank.  But I can picture it in my mind.  I just can't say the word.  It's so frustrating.

I thought I was the only one with short term memory issues. Not sure if hearing there are others makes me feel better about it or worse.

It truly is scary. Almost embarrassing at times.

Bro I forget words like table mid sentence....

I'm ascared it may be concussion related
It's funny you say this.  My wife and I just heard someone say this.  And they were like a high ranking official.  We both kind of looked at each other quizzically.  Is this something that a certain part of the US says?  And if so, where?

If you do a search, I'm sure you can find at least 10 threads I've started asking if any other people are having memory issues. :bag:

I play pickup basketball games at the Y often with a bunch of 16-25 year old kids. I can stil rain threes down on those fools, or use my sweaty body to muscle them on the block, but can't keep up with them at all on the perimeter. After games, I often get the dreaded "I bet you were pretty good when you were younger" faux compliment.

Its been our go to schtick for 20+ years here

I have no idea how/where we started saying it.

It started during a golf trip - where lets say there is water down the left. Guy then blasts it into the woods on the right.  "I was ascared to hit in the water...."

And I get the shtick.  But that's why it was odd when we saw someone use it in a non-shtick way.  Which makes me think that the shtick is born from making fun of an actual region that says this.

Ok i was born in 1975 and it's 2019 right now.  So that's... wait it's 2020. Oh but i haven't had my birthday yet. So I'm 44. Wait is that right?   I swear I was 44 last time I did this.
I once asked an older gentleman how old he was.  "Let me think.  It changes every year."

I went to the grocery store 3 days in a row to buy a few items. 3 days in a row My wife said as I was walking out "Be sure to pick up a bottle of aspirin"   Still no aspirin.  I remembered the aspirin everyday as I was pulling into my garage.

Apparently my teenage celebrity crush Suzanne Somers still getting busy in her 70s.

She’s a walking testament to the health claims made in her 27th book, “A New Way To Age,” out this week. Only a crutch betrays that she is just three days off a six-week bedrest stint for a fractured hip — an injury that very nearly harshed her vibe.

“I wish I could say that I fractured it having too much sex,” Somers, who can still handle any position and typically has sex with her 83-year-old husband, Alan Hamel, twice a day, tells the Post. “But when you have a fractured hip, there is no sex. There’s no coming from behind, or on top, or side or anything.”
In fact, Hamel — who Somers injects with testosterone every Tuesday, as well as the peptide PT-141, so he can keep up with her “rockin’ libido” — joined Somers for the whole of her downtime.

That's kind of ridiculous.  Why would she want three bottles of aspirin, and why couldn't you get them on the same day?

Also try using your phone to set reminders for things like that.  If you're on apple, use siri.  If you're on android use the clock app to set an alarm for the time you plan to be at the store and name it get the aspirin. If it's more complicated make a grocery list.

He's a vet. He could have had a set for about $1200. His buddy got them. And believe me, he could afford them. But the dude thinks if a plumber charges more than $40, he's being robbed.
Weird. My dad is a vet also and he is able to get a new set, at no cost, every two years.

I dunno if this is due to aging or what, but I'm not sure I can let loose and drink a lot of booze anymore.  Went out to watch the UFC fight on Saturday night, had several beers and 3 shots.

Had a terrible night's sleep and was totally incapacitated yesterday.  Hell, I still feel terrible.

:sadbanana:

I just read the last page. A lot of the stuff about memory hits home with me. I feel like I’m underperforming at work and have lots of anxiety and stress.

I ordered some nootropics a couple of weeks ago. One is called Brain Support, has a bunch of stuff people rave about in online reviews. Also got some stuff called phenylpiracetam.

And got L-Theanine which I can find locally at places like Walmart. I know it’s decent for anxiety because I’ve had it before. I also drink a can of monster about every morning, I’m not really into coffee like a lot of people

Maybe there was a difference when I started taking everything. Thinking a bit clearer. Honestly I’m not sure how much better I am. I think I might lose my job and I can’t say I would blame them. I can’t do one thing once then when the same problem comes up in the future remember the solution. I suck at using my company laptop. I get anxiety every morning I open it up because of worrying about being able to use it.

Have any of you guys tried nootropics and have any in particular you like or think work?

You might want to see a doctor about not taking any of that stuff, including the monster.  Some of those things are psychoactive and/or work against each other.  Find an actual treatment for what ails you, please.

Sunday I took the dog for a walk.   It had snowed Saturday and when I took him, there was a light dusting of snow that came down.  Well this light dusting hid any ice on the sidewalks.

Sure enough, WHOOP....Up and down I went.  HARD...Landed right on my back..Probably looked like Charlie Brown when trying to kick a football.

Rolled around in agonizing pain for a few moments, got up and started back to the house.

I'm 52.  On the one hand, I was embarrassed that I fell like some clumsy old fart...however...while my back is a little sore today, it's not nearly as sore as I thought it might be....which in a way tells me I'm still a little tougher than maybe I thought I was.

this happened to me in the spring. except my head bounced off the concrete like a basketball. the strain from trying to prevent pulled a bunch of neck & shoulder muscles. it was tiring for me just to hold my head up for like 3 straight days.

sucks

i've been trying to be really, really careful about not walking on snowy patches that aren't deep which may be covering ice. feels like a bad way to go out.

How can a guy in his 50s tell if he's in good shape relative to the rest of the population? Is there some sort of universal fitness test somewhere?

Should a 50yo guy be able to run a mile? If so, in what amount of time? How many push-ups, etc....

As long as I can still outpace the rest of the old guys walking the mall I'm good to go.

I think they’re probably witchcraft at this point, but most haven’t been rigorously studied. Get your overall health in line first with a healthy diet, consistent exercise and sleep. Coffee may help, too.

Funny you mention this. Just last month, AARP Magazine ( :bag: ) had an article that basically stated NONE of those "mind improvement" supplements work. None of them have been proven clinically to be even remotely effective. They basically said save your money. Take that for what it is worth of course.

I did this in my 30s. Was convinced I had broken my hip. I can't imagine doing it now. T&Ps!!!

Yes, I order my Phenibut from them. I've kept to only using it about once a week, but am a big believer in it for a number of reasons. It will keep your focus in the moment, and you'll appreciate things you normally wouldn't.

Reading up on Phenibut ... it looks like it can put you to sleep. Is it mainly a sleep aid? If so, that must be why you keep the dosage low and infrequent. Superficially, seems to be the opposite of what a nootropics are meant to do.

The main thing it's used for is anxiety relief, although I've never used it for anxiety. It's never put me to sleep, although the one time I got the dosage up to about 1.5g I was MUCH more comfortable horizontal. I was close to rolling at that point. That being said it does mellow you out. You could say It blisses you out. The reason I keep the doses infrequent is everything I've read about possibility for addiction. I've never had an addictive personality, but to those who do, tread carefully.

there's a pond across the street from my house. it's not very big or deep. it's iced over with a layer of snow.

on top of the snow there's a brand new shovel and pair of ice skates. 20 years ago i'd just stroll out there and grab em.

today i contemplated all the possible ways walking out on the ice could end poorly for me and opted to leave them there for someone else to pick up.

Recently, As I was getting reminded by everyone that I walk with a limp, i decided to see my doctor about it. I had also noticed some lack of flexibility in my hip so thought maybe they were related issues. My doctor suggests an xray and the results show moderately  to severe arthritis in my right hip. He's pretty surprised that I would have this so young (54) but seems I do. Lucky me. Physio should help but there's no cure so in maybe 5 years I'll need a new hip.

Yay.

I've had so many doctors say this to me and I've heard other friends say the same thing.  Maybe doctors should just shut the hell up.
