I'm giving this show a thumb's up and will watch season 2. I looked for Sepinwall's review and see he says he won't be doing one because he stopped watching after 2 episodes, and further see a common opinion that the show was poor in the beginning, but got better. That's not really what I experienced. I actually think the first few episodes were the better part of the show - when the characters were still somewhat realistic, before they all descended into a silly parody.
I have two issues with the show. First, there are no likable characters in this show (other than perhaps a few very minor characters). If I were to list the top 10-15 characters in this show in terms of their importance to the show, screentime, etc., every single one of them (as far as I can recall) is a horrible, pathetic person. That doesn't necessarily make the show bad, and its actually kind of interesting, but it does make it somewhat difficult to continue watching when there is no one to "root" for, no character I want to do well, succeed, win. Second, I think the show unsuccessfully tries to balance drama with comedy. Many great shows have pulled this off in the past, but I don't think Succession does it very well - its caught between the two rather than balancing them in a workable way. The kids are supposed to be funny caricatures, insanely, improbably greedy, impossibly selfish, deceitful, to a comedic level. At the same time, Kendall is supposedly part of a team that is pulling off an advanced M&A maneuver, Culkin's character is COO, put in charge of important business ventures, and Shiv is a successful, coveted, very high level political consultant. That's all kind of stupid. I guess my problem is that the comedy part is pretty well done, but the drama part is mostly stupid, far too unrealistic.
