Succession on HBO (1 Viewer)

I'm giving this show a thumb's up and will watch season 2.  I looked for Sepinwall's review and see he says he won't be doing one because he stopped watching after 2 episodes, and further see a common opinion that the show was poor in the beginning, but got better.  That's not really what I experienced. I actually think the first few episodes were the better part of the show - when the characters were still somewhat realistic, before they all descended into a silly parody.

I have two issues with the show. First, there are no likable characters in this show (other than perhaps a few very minor characters). If I were to list the top 10-15 characters in this show in terms of their importance to the show, screentime, etc., every single one of them (as far as I can recall) is a horrible, pathetic person.  That doesn't necessarily make the show bad, and its actually kind of interesting, but it does make it somewhat difficult to continue watching when there is no one to "root" for, no character I want to do well, succeed, win.  Second, I think the show unsuccessfully tries to balance drama with comedy.  Many great shows have pulled this off in the past, but I don't think Succession does it very well - its caught between the two rather than balancing them in a workable way.  The kids are supposed to be funny caricatures, insanely, improbably greedy, impossibly selfish, deceitful, to a comedic level.  At the same time, Kendall is supposedly part of a team that is pulling off an advanced M&A maneuver, Culkin's character is COO, put in charge of important business ventures, and Shiv is a successful, coveted, very high level political consultant.  That's all kind of stupid.  I guess my problem is that the comedy part is pretty well done, but the drama part is mostly stupid, far too unrealistic.

Cousin Greg is a genius and a hero. I will not stand for this blasphemy.

This show is awful.

Let's get Brian Cox then never use him.  In fact, lets put him into a coma to start are new show.  Bizarre.

Kendall, Ferris Bueller-friend, Greg and Culkin are just ridiculous characters.  At least be funny?  Not at all.  It's brutal.

Shiv has no range.  Just a blank stare.  Basically a marshmallow.

Will say Tom is a great character and steals every scene.

I think Kendall clearly left his key card at the crash scene.  It's not a bluff.  Not sure why this up for discussion.  Kendall thinks he lost his card and Cox just so happens to come up with that exact bluff?

I understand the lack of buzz for this show now.
Yep. I tried.  Gave up after a few episodes.  The Murdochs should be fascinating subjects but from what I watched the attempt was poorly executed.

The best you can say for Greg is that he is slightly less deplorable than the others in his family.   Like his cousins, his sole goal in life is to find an angle to leach off the old man. He immediately recognizes and exploits an opportunity to backstab and extort. Not a hero or genius yet, although I can see his character developing somewhat in season 2.

On reflection, I suppose the two board members - the lawyer and former COO, as well as the old brother living in Canada, are perhaps decent people, but are too far on the fringe of the action to be characters one could identify with.  Still a good show, just noting my reservations.

:goodposting: I dropped out after the much hyped bachelor party episode.  Bunch of guys walking around a place like that doing absolutely nothing.  It stopped being funny after the first couple of episodes.

I can buy a lot of this but I still enjoyed Season 1.

awesome show, just finished.  The ending clearly sets up for another season.

Man there is just something about Shiv that I find incredibly hot.  Her looks are not all that and she has big hips but there is just something about her.  Willa is the queen bee on the show however.

I’m with you on Shiv. Belongs in the oddly attractive thread

Not nearly enough Greg on Sunday night
"Oh, he promised you? Yes, Greg, go get a refund.Did you keep your receipt?"

Kendall is gearing up to be the new shotcaller after dad dies. He is legitimately the only one dad can trust without reservation, since dad had all his skeletons installed in the family vault.

This show is a lot like Billions for me, the early seasons at least. Very entertaining but the writing leaves it way short of "great".

"I believe some of your acquaintances are humping in my bedroom"

God bless cousin Greg.

I kinda think the show is overdoing it with EVERYONE double crossing EVERYONE every 5 minutes.  Its a bit much. But I'm still entertained.

What about Kendall stealing batteries and throwing them away?  That was very odd....   Maybe I missed the hidden meaning other than he just doesn't give 2 sh!ts anymore....

The guy behind the counter paid him no mind as his attention was on a game on TV. Pretty sure he did it as a small, private fu to the guy.

My take was he's basically dead inside and is looking for anything that makes him feel even slightly alive. The blow, the party/"looking for ##### like a ####ing techno Gatsby," having some dude drive him around on a motorcycle (Season 1 opened with him in the traditional "rich guy in the back seat of a big black car" setup), firing a bunch of people in a manner far more cruel than necessary and then not even reacting when someone spits in his face - all of it seems like he's a dead man walking and just wants to feel something. Shoplifting is another way to do that.

Also, check out this sampling of articles on the Vaulter screen during one of the scenes:

– Meet The World’s Richest People Trafficker (He’s A Surprisingly Nice Guy)

– Is Every Taylor Swift Song Secretly Marxist?

– 5 Reasons Why Drinking Milk On The Toilet Is Kind Of A Game-Changer

A pitch-perfect jab at digital media as a throwaway joke that 99% of viewers missed (I missed it- got them from this writeup).  This show is so great.

I understand we're supposed to hate Roman, but he kind of ruins the show for me. He's just so over the top all the time. Really can't stand it. At this point, Greg is the only one on the show I like.

Rewatching Episode 2, and the scene where Shiv sits down with Logan to discuss taking over...

Logan is working on a Samsung-like laptop computer that is branded as “LAMLUNG”.

Great show great dialogue and it always seems Logan is setting someone up to get crapped on.

My only issue with this episode and its a huge plot hole was that Logan when berserk when someone leaked about taking over the other company.  But I counted at least 20 people that he discussed it in front of including low level people.  Just seemed odd/
