Summerpalooza IV - Combined Music/Fantasy Draft - Braxton Un-Breaks My Heart (1 Viewer)

Finished @otb_lifer's playlist last night. I recognized half the artists and knew 6 of the songs going in. If there is a theme to this playlist I have no idea what it is.

I didn't like the Peter Ubu or Hank Williams tracks but the rest was a good listen. Lots of genres in this mix so didn't really have a flow but I did like it . Props on the Underdog theme song cuts, loved that show.

My fav on here is the Ballad of Dwight Fry which I took in Genrepallooza. I think it was @Pip's Invitation that had never heard it before and was like-"wtf was that?"

Fav new to me tracks were Metastasis and Angels F*** Devil's Kiss

Easop Winston Jr. - WR - Saints

Paul Desmond - Samba De Orpheu

Easop Winston Jr. isn't a deep sleeper that you missed on your list.  I'm making a sentimental pre-season transaction to pick up the son of a family friend.

The Winston family were parishioners of the Baptist church where Mrs. Eephus' step-father preached.  Teenage Easop Sr. was a fixture at holiday get togethers at my in-laws.  He was a good kid who was always kind to @ditkaburgers and her little brother. There's a picture in Grammy and Papa's living room from when he played QB for Lincoln High in SF.  I heard he had a kid when he was playing JuCo ball and moved to the East Bay.  I haven't seen him since but if I ever run into him at a wedding or funeral I can tell him I had Easop Jr. on my fantasy team.

Easop Jr. is trying to make the Saints as a WR/return specialist. The roster projections I've seen show him on the bubble. I'll drop him from my team as soon as somebody else catches my eye but it can't be a jinx if you call it in advance.

Alto sax legend Paul Desmond (1924-1977) was born in SF and graduated from old Poly High, the alma mater of George Siefert.  Desmond has the most wonderful breathy tone on the sax.

Today's listening choice was the jazz playlist by @Eephus. I've never really listened to jazz and probably couldn't tell bad from good. My only exposure has been some Ive listened to in these drafts,a couple Miles Davis albums and some live stuff at each of Detroit's jazz bars.

Surpringly I didn't hate it! Was a nice easy and well flowing listen. I have decided I prefer piano based jazz over horn based if that's a thing . Favorite tracks- Down to the River and That's All.

Listened to RA's playlist on my walk with Lou today.  77/78 Punk is a narrow concept to work with.  I'll leave it to the replay booth to see if he got both feet inbounds on the UK band selections.

It was a cohesive listen as you'd expect.  It would certainly work well as a standalone Punk playlist which is a good thing if you plan on listening to it more than once.

The whole thing was over in less than an hour even with the track by the Normals on there twice. My list probably has over an hour of just saxophone solos lol.

Thank you for listening, Eephus. I appreciate you delving into it. The UK bands were not crow flying entities, that's for sure. They were a little more, um, inspired(?). Blaming otb seems like a nice default position, so I'll throw him under the double decker bus there.

Vinyl update: Got some unexpected birthday gifts. One was from my neighbor, who -- for reasons unknown -- appreciates what I bring to the table somehow. Her and her husband got me a cake and a gift card. I wanted to refuse, but didn't want to make a scene nor seem unappreciative so I thanked them and mailed them a thank you card, too. I was taken aback. Nice to know you're appreciated. I think I'm going to get their dog something from the pet store. Just some treats or something.

Anyway, I ordered Big Star's Radio City with it. I thought of @krista4when I did so.

Cleveland D.
You know when I grow up, I’m gonna look back at the place I left
Rollin the dice on the weekend, conversations and the company kept
Smokin cigarettes behind the school with my best friends
I never will forget, I take that with me till the end
Football and tall trees, the autumn never ends, summer lovin in.

Ohio, treat me well
Ohio, treat me well

I'm going to listen to both your and Eephus's playlists soon.  Both appeal to me greatly.  Thanks for the shout-out on the Big Star record!  Happy birthday!(?)  Is it today?  It's a sweet gesture for you to get something for the neighbor's pup.

k4, my birthday was the twenty-fourth -- thank you for the birthday wishes! The neighbors had given me the gift a few days ago, I just happened to have done something relevant with it today. I know you think really highly of Alex Chilton and Big Star; for whatever reason I had a power pop list on Spotify playing, they were on it, I started listening to the album, and I decided to get it.

As for the pup, we have a pet store very close to me. One of the big box chain ones, IIRC. He's a terrier of the sort that they use for the Target commercials. I'll try and get him something K-9 righteous.

It was -- and I objected to its placement on the 70s on 7 playlist because it was insanely out of character compared with the rest of it. It doesn't belong with Bill Withers and Little River Band and whatnot.

I know we got rid of the Superflex aspect - but why was that second flex spot completely eliminated? Shouldn't there just be 2 normal flex slots this season?

Just finished @Northern Voice's playlist. Heard of 9 of the artists but only knew 3 of the songs. Surprisingly good listen but didn't really flow due to all the different genres. Really surprised the Cole Beasley track wasn't the worst one on here, lol.

Songs I hated- I Been On, Chattahoochee and Raise Up

Fav new to me- California Love

Other new to me likes- Waking Up in Vegas, Killer Parties and Colorado.

Next up is @The Dreaded Marco

Yeah I'm kinding of going for shuffle party playlist that will have something for everyone (and also something that everyone hates  )

Hey Doc, we went over this during the draft. It's why I went RB-RB-RB to begin with, remember by chance? (If you don't, perfectly understandable). I had thought that we had two flex spots still and was going to fill them with RBs later, too. But NV had indicated one flex spot. So that's how it went.

That's all I've got to add.

I remember the discussion about eliminating the Superflex part but not that part. No big deal. Thanks.

Finished @The Dreaded Marco's playlist. I recognized 9 of the bands but none of the songs. I really liked this playlist which is surprising since I knew none of the songs and most of it is stuff I usually wouldn't listen to. Not sure there is a theme but it had a nice flow and comes in at under an hour.

Didnt hate these but something has to be the worst- Kicker of Elves,Miner and Sooner Than Later

best new finds-Wolf Like Me and The Day That Lassie Went to the Moon

other standouts-Buffalo,Arabian Knights,Sometimes a Pony Gets Depressed,Tallahasse Lassie

They were sequenced in the order I drafted them so it wasn’t really meant to flow.

My “theme” was song titles that mentioned the player’s college team nickname/mascot, either overtly or tangentially.

Thanks for listening. Glad you liked a few of them.

Thought it may have been mostly mascots due to all the animals involved. After the first 2 songs it actually flowed pretty well. Nice job!

Superflex IMO is basically a 2nd QB spot - it's added to boost the value of QBs in 10/12 team leagues. So in my opinion, the question is either "having that 2nd QB spot or not" - not "having a second flex spot or not". Could have been clearer for sure.  I probably should have just declared the rules I wanted at the start.

I figure that's the case for lots of picks due to the geographic constraints and limited choices
There weren't any geographical constraints.  I didn't look at a map once.  I'm pretty sure Elton John isnt from Philadelphia.

Add - Cordarrelle Patterson RB/WR - Falcons

Cecil Taylor / John Coltrane - Double Clutching

Dual position eligibility isn't as useful as in baseball but maybe Patterson can earn some time in Atlanta.

This song is from an odd 1958 session originally released under pianist Taylor's name but re-released as a Coltrane record in 1962. It was the only time he and Coltrane played together.

Taylor's idiosyncratic style of accompaniment probably took some getting used to by the musicians.  He's kind of like Monk in this regard and Monk always did better work I think with horn players who were familiar with him.

Thanks, you intrepid goon! May your rewards be great, your pleasures long-standing, my friend. May you also have many happy returns.

i feel as if i've been properly slagged by my buddy here - i'd like to say i resemble that remark - i was escorted off a flight this past Wednesday, i'm sure the staff would concur, so you got that goin' for ya - which is pretty cool.

all good natured chiding aside, i hope the turning of the page allowed some Seger-ish sagaciousness - i'm really not that good at that or this.

cue sad banana for the dried out husk of a pigskin carcass that will be the 5-11 Jets - can you dig that?

Corey Davis - can we not?

theme was ... no theme.

i didn't undertake to sniff my own farts, just to spotlight tunes pursuant to the drafted players locale, etc.

wanted pure glue sniffing fodder, and - in the final analysis - shuffling from Jack Off Jill to Teddy P kinda reeks of Duco Cement in a crumpled lunch bag.

i couldn't be any more ecstatic at the promise of the playlist, i will partake later today as i sink further down the altered state avenue.

Just a term of endearment coming from someone who knows.

Why were you...oh, I don't want to know. Where were you going? That's the important part. If it's out West and you didn't phone rock, he'll be upset.

Corey Davis = YES! Pass Go! Colllect $200. Maybe more?

Zach Wilson sat last night. No sad bananas here.

Wait, what? I think you buried the lead.

Add - Anthony McFarland Jr. - RB - PIT

Gary McFarland Sextet - I Love To Say Her Name

Hopefully this will be my last pre-season roster move but I was persuaded by an article than mentioned McFarland.  RB2 in Pittsburgh seem like a better flyer than a RB3 from somewhere else.

Gary McFarland (1933-1971) was a talented composer/arranger who was busy in the 60s before a fatal overdose in 1971. He plays the vibraphone on this small (for him) group session from 1963. The song composed by McFarland is a pretty little waltz.

Add Justice Hill - RB - Bal

Andrew Hill - Mira

I'm bringing in the pianist Andrew Hill (1931-2007) to accompany my Ravens RB2 ticket.

Hill recorded a dozen records for Blue Note in the 60s including this session from 1968.  Lee Morgan on trumpet and Booker Ervin on tenor are bluesier soloists than on other Hill albums which keeps Hill mostly inside without his tendency to take more abstract journeys.

Man, what did you say this time?

I thought I earned myself a TO the other day too, but I guess not.

I saw rock in the Eagles thread in the SP. That was likely his downfall.

He claims he'll be back tomorrow. It was not that serious of a transgression. But nothing is serious, according to that guy. How many times will he suffer brief vacations until he learns? Or gets a whopper?

Inquiring minds inquire.

Man are they getting touchy if one of the last 3 posts got you dinged in there.  Weird site and mods sometimes.
