but I do really wonder wtf they dumped those- so much better than the US version in lots of ways (other than spiteful/hateful drama taking everything personally as they do in the US).

So disappointed. Was literally in the middle of the 2nd to last episode of Australian Season 1 when it went away. Really enjoying the AUS version - everything about it seems better than the Probst version. SOMEBODY FIX THIS!!!!!!!!

Don't think anybody ever said it was addiction. but afaik, that's not exactly a standard sleep aid- thought it was something bipolar or manic people use to ease/minimize manic episodes. He said he'd been taking it for years and was trying ween off of it...just at a poorly chosen point in time. Hopefully they bring him back.

This might be the least physically impressive group of people ever assembled for the show.

He said he'd been taking it for years and was trying ween off of it...just at a poorly chosen point in time. Hopefully they bring him back.

And if you are on it, it can mess with your kidney function and cause dehydration, which it appears is what happened. 

If this were a normal season, they would have pulled him as soon as they learned of the issue and put in an alternate (some seasons they have the alternates on site for the pregame, other seasons they have flown someone in). But that wasn’t possible in a pandemic season. The information didn’t come to light until after the required quarantine. So production’s choice was to do what it did or start the game with 17 people.

thanks.  I was a bit confused why he was pulled.  So basically he would likely be in withdrawl and with the other factors it was too risky.  Im surprised though that they didnt do drug tests and other tests to find this out earlier.

It was a great story and I loved how he reconnected with his dad, but I don’t for a minute think they weren’t aware or couldn’t have stopped him from going on the show as soon as he said he was off it. They admitted to getting that info and if they were planning to monitor him very carefully that would be a red flag. I’d even think a show like Survivor may even have a person or two on call just in case.

I don’t think they were surprised. Note how they did it before the very physical challenge and note how they made it 5 on 5 on 5. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t they make the small tribe last year compete with less people when they were down folks? Jeff said the he notified them the day before they left for the show. I think they planned to let him tell his story. Jeff said they would have talked more about it if he hadn’t already told his tribe. After the story is told, take him off before the challenge.

That is not correct. The tribe(s) with more people always sit someone(s) out to make the numbers even. That is why Heather competed in so few immunity challenges before the merge. (Her meltdown was in a reward challenge.)

Or they literally told him what would be happening and he should get his "story" out to the tribe early so it could be featured on the show and make him memorable.  Then, if he plays along, when he was fully off of the Lithium they would bring him back for a future season.

It seemed like his story to the tribe was very quick and almost forced into conversation by him.  He also didn't seem overly surprised or upset when Jeff broke the news.  So I think he knew how this was going to play out before it happened.

For instance, if everyone has to climb up and dive into the water, having an extra team member hurts you so people even up to sit out but during say the boulder challenge you could use the extra folks. Agreed. It wasn’t a surprise but I think rather than replace him last minute that they saw a really good story to tell. One that like last season makes them look PC/woke after all the criticism they took in seasons prior. I didn’t mind his story, it was pretty cool the way he bonded with his dad, but I watch Survivor for Survivor and hearing stories about people fills in their character as they make or break alliances. They had this whole segment ready and planned out. Look at the girl from Kenya, they had a couple pictures like normal family stuff they show when people are being interviewed. They had a whole news segment on him.

Nope. The number is always even. The only time I can think of when it wasn’t was the gross food challenge in the first season, when they were making things up on the fly. 

I think the immunity challenge last night was particularly difficult because it was designed for 6 people but had to be performed with 5 due to the Jackson situation.

I tend to agree with bugs... a show this massive is going to have a whole list of alternates ready to go at a drop of a hat.

I am probably being foolish, but I am hoping this year is about Survivor--the game. My wife and I have watched pretty much every season and we just couldn't get through the last one with all the overt wokeness stuff being brought up at every corner. It was just so forced and made it unwatchable.

I agree.  I think they left him in long enough to get his story.

For the most part, I don't care about the players' stories.  I realize I will never be on a show like this, I don't think I can come up with a sad/inspiring enough story to make the cut.  Not that I would try to get on it.

While lithium has a withdrawal syndrome (mostly irritability, insomnia, weakness, lightheadedness), the biggest risk from rapid tapering is recrudescence of his mood disorder - both mania and depression (I'm not buying he'd be prescribed it purely as a sleep aid). It's recommended to be tapered slowly, like over months in chronic users.

The kidney stuff/dehydration/high sodium are signs of lithium toxicity, but you wouldn't expect that as the drug clears his system. As such, I don't believe there is any special blood testing/drug levels done during conventional tapering. I also don't think there is a standardized protocol for stopping it cold turkey.

I think the show is hard enough without dealing with uncontrolled mood disorder and potential suicidality, and they didn't have a mental health professional willing to sign off on the risks associated with abrupt lithium discontinuation.

funny- I remember a guy in one of the first few seasons... maybe a funny adverstising guy, maybe from NYC- who decided to quit cigarettes cold turkey on the show. went into a laughable freefall of manic irrational irritation. made for funny tv (I still remember laughing at it). Lithium? good gravy no. danger to self as well as to others (depending on the relative manic states he's exhibited before).
