TE Kyle Pitts, ATL (8 Viewers)

How confident are people in Pitts going forward? He had a solid day due to the TD but besides that he didn't do much. Cousins does not look good and I worry everyone will suffer from it, especially Pitts.

Very.

Played 96% of the snaps and was the only TE in the league to participate on 100% of his teams routes. 90% was second most.

Yes Cousins sucked. Who would have a guessed a QB on a new team could use some preseason action? It should all improve.

The Steelers D is also very good. I think I have elevated my Pitts outlook based on this game.

Watt absolutely wrecked this game. Also, gotta remember everything is new in Atlanta, from the staff to the QB, the latter of which is coming off a major injury and didn’t play any in the preseason. Better days are ahead for the Falcons.

Kyle Pitts ran a route on just 74% of dropbacks in Week 2 after his famous 100% route rate in Week 1. That 74% is below the "Arthur Smith usage" of 77% in 2023.

Needed him to literally catch 1 ball for 1 yard in order to win last night (and then not fumble afterwards)

Not gonna lie....I was still concerned.

Dumb move drafting this guy. Its just never gonna work out.

I loaded up on him this year - first time.
:Point to shirt emoji if we still have it here:

Not a great start. But not great for most TE's either. PItts is currently TE6 in scoring to give you an idea of how bad the position is in general through the first two weeks of the season.

The Coachspeak Index
#Falcons OC Zac Robinson on Kyle Pitts only having 12 targets through 3 games:

“Coverage can dictate so many different things of where the football goes. Of course, you’re wanting to get the ball in his hands… He’ll continue to get the ball in the flow of the offense, as it goes.”

“I think the more that he can be detail-oriented, play as fast as he did, the ball’s naturally just gonna find him.”

Who's dumber, those of you who keep drafting this guy season after season, or people like me who've been laughing at you for years but decided to take the plunge this time?

I'm pretty sure it's me but open to further discussion.

The ones who made offers for him after not getting him in their drafts.

He's been in the league for 4 years now, and every year we hear, "THIS IS THE YEAR! HE'S GONNA' BLOW UP!". And every year he turns into a turd.

I can't think of any other TE where the hype is so wildly out of proportion with his yearly performance.

Ladarius Green, maybe.

Epitome of roster poison. Can’t start him, has no trade value, but as soon as you drop, you know he’ll emerge on someone’s else roster.

Took him high in my TE-premium DEV draft a few years back going into his last season at Florida.

In the middle of that season I was offered Josh Jacobs for Pitts and next year's dev pick.

Took the deal and felt like an idiot in 2021 when Pitts balled out while Jacobs struggled.

Then the pendulum swung back the next year and Jacobs won me title.

Now I'm just kind of scratching my head, looking at Pitts, wondering what happened here. I can't figure it out because he had special qualities as a receiving threat out of the TE slot. Great vertical speed and range. I guess if there was an issue, his route running was not quite elite and he had a slight frame for the position, more like a big WR than your typical in-line two-way TE. All the same, I'm amazed by how pedestrian he has been.

You would think he would at least be good for the occasional big play, but he's just been invisible more often than not. I can't explain it, but sometimes it happens. There have been quite a few TE prospects who didn't have the sustained success I envisioned for them. I'm thinking of Jordan Cameron, Eric Ebron, Evan Engram, Tyler Eifert, and Hayden Hurst. It doesn't take much for these standout TEs to become borderline waiver fodder in start 1 TE leagues.

Shows that elite athleticism doesn’t mean a whole lot if you can’t consistently get open. If you don’t, you become one of the last options a QB is looking for, and seems that is Pitts at this juncture.

Yea, maybe it's that simple. He's the Justin Hunter of TEs. Straight-line athletic, but not a great separator out of breaks. Rich man's Devin Funchess.

That's why you'd think they would utilize him on some downfield shots. Leverage his strengths.

Gesicki and Julius Thomas had some success in the league with similarly flawed skill sets.

Considering the kind of hype Pitts had as a prospect, that type of career would be a disappointment though.

I still think of his UF days in the SEC where I believe he had 4 TDs in the first half. Kyle Trask was his QB. Then gets picked 4th overall. He has to be a star, right?

The Hyatt kid from UT had 5 TDs against Bama. He doesn’t even play on the Giants.

Sometimes college performances are just that.

Hyatt is a mite who can't do anything except run fast.

Pitts is 6'6" with 4.4 speed and power forward skills. In theory he should be able to win down the seam 24/7.

He's supposed to the Calvin Johnson of TEs.

In practice he's...an expensive decoy? I don't know. For whatever reasons, it's not clicking.

I do think maybe the lack of traditional TE strength and separation has been a factor. The guys who really had great careers at this position like Witten, Gonzo, Gronk, Kelce, Andrews, and Graham had quite a bit more physicality than Pitts. He is a WR playing TE.

He biggest issue to me is he is soft. He gets pushed around a lot for a guy his size. He doesn’t have a jump ball mentality to win one on one. He is frequently on the ground or out fought for targets. When Gonzalez played for the Falcons, his athleticism was gone but he would win a contested catch every time. I thought he would be good but I thought he was a terrible pick considering the line play on both sides were so bad. The pick should have been Sewell for the same reason Sewell should have been the pick for the Bengals.

Even though the fantasy community has suffered with Pits for multiple seasons, they will still ask too much for him in a dynasty trade. They just can't get it out of their head that this guy doesn't carry as much value as they think he does. I asked a question earlier about his route running that no one replied to, because I watched a podcast some time back (was it Waldman?), that he has issues running routes. Is that the reason why he isn't game planned more?

Literally just dropping him to waivers in dynasty. I don't care what he does in the future. I need to pretend like he never existed for my own sanity.
