The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 1. Goodfellas (10 Viewers)

I've never see RD, Casino or AB.
I've never seen RD because I heard about *that* scene and said NOPE. I have seen most of the other Tarantinos, though. I've never seen Casino because I was dating my first wife at the time and it wasn't her thing, and I never got around to checking it out afterward.

I did see AB and loved it as a 20-something, but I don't think I'd be so into it now.
If you can get through the end of IB, DU, and OUaTIH, RD is no sweat and a quick scene by comparison.
Yeah I don’t get it. That scene isn’t so bad really and they also throw some humor into it to make it less “real”.

23. Trainspotting (1996)

Directed by: Danny Boyle

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewan Bremner

Synopsis: [/B]A heroin addict from Edinburgh attempts to clean up his life.

One of those movies that symbolizes the decade for me.

Trip's Official Ruling: Appropriately Ranked

I'm sure Timmy will have a few "WTF selections" coming up(please no more ****ing animated) but we are getting to the point of the countdown where it's going to really come down to personal preference.

Also, did I mention how underappreciated Last of the Mohicans and Seven were in this list?

The whole countdown isn't personal preference?

Wow, it was only 3 years ago that @Ilov80s and I did ours. I finally found the page that had my top 100 movies listed. There would be a little movement on mine like Lebowski moving up farther, but I'd still stand by it for the most part. Cable Guy at #11 and outside my top 5 was the biggest whiff. ;)

Cable Guy is my favorite Jim Carey movie. :bag:
:hifive: No bag needed, GB.

I have been listening to episodes of the Films to Be Buried With podcast. The last silly question is what DVD would you take to heaven with you to watch for your movie night. A bit of the premise is that you assume that there are already enough copies of Godfather and all the obvious greats. The first movie that popped in my head for my answer the first time I heard the question was The Cable Guy.

Where the **** did 3 years just go?!!

I don't know, but I was laughing at your reactions while I was going through the thread looking for my list.

Cable Guy is my favorite Jim Carey movie. :bag:
It’s close to mine. Definitely top 5.

Brilliant role.

I was never a big Jim Carey fan (to me he was always doing an impersonation of Jerry Lewis) but this movie hit HBO in '96 when I was living alone and working on the road as a young pup out of college. It was always on HBO. Always.

And I just loved it. Prime example of a dark comedy done right.

I've never see RD, Casino or AB.
Then what the hell are you even doing in this thread?
I came for all the madonna and woody allen picks
Desperately Seeking Susan still out there.
and **** tracy
If Grosse Point Blank doesn't make this list, Imma go nuts.
never heard of it
I’ve seen it but don’t remember Madonna in it. It’s been a long time though.

yeah, that one hasn't aged well at all. Some funny lines and scenes though.
I thought it was overrated then. And now? Blech. One giant meh of a film.

How many times did you ask yourself, “lets watch American Beauty” after the first time you saw it. Yeah that’s what I thought.

Just another flick.

I'll watch any time I see it on the TV.

And it won an Academy Award for Best Picture. BUT GM, WINNING AN OSCAR DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!!!!11111

Get out of here. It was a very good movie then and it is very good today. Yes, it's cringey. Yes, it makes viewers uncomfortable. Best. Picture.

Mic drop.
Thank you!

Some of the reaction to American Beauty is a bit weird, as if we are supposed to feel bad for loving a film where the main character is a creep.

Who said you are supposed to feel bad about loving a movie? We are just bsing and expressing opinions, no need to take it too seriously.

90s cinema is serious business. :P

Let me ask this:

How come a movie like To Die For, where Nicole Kidman ****s a high school kid, is met with indifference but American Beauty brings out the cringe police?

I just watched something called Black Licorice. It's awful, avoid it like a lice infested movie theater seat. But the entire movie is a love affair between a woman in her late 20s and a 15 year old kid.

Why is that fine but American Beauty crosses a line? Make that make sense.

It's a little bit of hypocrisy I know but EVERY guy has had that fantasy. I also think most of us look at it as an older man taking advantage of a woman and the reverse is just a guy doing what he needs to get down.

That is pretty easy to explain. It's called a 'double standard'. Duh.

:lmao: at "cringe police".

  • I didn't have To Die For on my Top 100 either
  • To my knowledge that movie doesn't feature a topless underage actress and an actor accused of sexual misconduct in real life as a character lusting after a HS student in it. I specifically posted that added to my feelings on the movie.
  • I haven't seen To Die For since it came out, so for all I know I could have a similar reaction. American Beauty I watched much more recently so it is fresh in my memory.
  • 0 clue what Black Licorice is, so again I have no context for what you speak of
  • In general, right or wrong, society frowns more on the older male/young girl power dynamic when that happens.
  • My beef with the end is my interpretation of how the relationship is framed throughout the movie. Other movies that I could think of have a more negative outlook on the character and are tonally different. Again, JMO and that is the beauty of art and how people view and interpret things differently. We all bring our individual baggage to the movies.

This isn't just an American Beauty thing. I don't like some 80s movies near as much now for similar reasons.

He meant Licorice Pizza. One difference there is it’s the 15 year old who wants a relationship with the adult. The adult is friends with him but she’s not trying to have a romantic relationship. Also like most things in movies the answer is just in how it’s filmed and portrayed. Just like we can watch a movie like Final Destination where a dozen people die horrible deaths and laugh through it all and then another movie has a single character die in an accident and it’s soul crushing.

Thanks for the clarification on the title of the movie. And the adult woman agrees to a date with the teen boy. It's in the first 15 minutes of the film.

Absolutely not. You said "EVERY GUY HAS THIS FANTASY". Your words.
yes but whether or not girls have that fantasy (and I do think that are a lot of older women that do fantazie of being with younger men) has absolutely nothing to do with why a lot of guys and society in general view it differently.

Doh! That make more sense. I've also said elsewhere that is my least favorite PTA, and i found that dynamic odd. As you said, it is not as sexually charged either.

But thank you for answering the question. In your opinion, older male/younger female = cringe. But older female/younger male = alright alright alright.

Went with a group to the Beehive in Pittsburgh (Oakland, not South Side) to watch Trainspotting when it came out. We were all high as ****. My buddy Dave (RIP) was sitting next to me whispering during the previews, offering up our opinions on the coming attractions. Then we’re quiet for a while before I say “this one looks great!” He agreed. After a couple minutes, he said “Dude, I think this is the movie.” :lmao:

Anyway, it was great, but the way the movie just sort of started with the running and the music and the voiceover confused our stoned little brains at first.

It is an odd movie but it's absolutely about an adult woman wanting a relationship with a child.

Please don't put words in my mouth. No, that 5th bullet point was more a general statement on why i dont think as many people would react the same to the two movies. As i said above i found the dynamic in Licorice Pizza weird and a reason i didn't click with that movie (can we at least agree it wasn't as overtly sexual too?) and i honestly don't remember To Die For at a besides a general memory of liking it at the time.

In my opinion all adult/underage dating and sexual relationships are cringe. As 80s said, it also greatly depends on how the film is shot and how i personally interpret it. I was also very clear it wasnt only that dynamic in the movie i am reacting to watching it 20+ years later.

Remember Indiana Jones and the girl student who had it out for Harrison Ford?

Lolita? You know that one?

Carried Away with Dennis Hopper and a 17 year old Amy Locane?

Hollywood is lousy with films about underage girls lusting after older men.

Dude, i didnt like the movie, and we are about to go down and even weirder rabbit hole debating what is more sexual in a movie - flashing boobs to a minor or masturbating while dreaming of diddling one.

I feel you and others are getting defensive as though i think you guys are weird pervs for liking a movie i don't. That was never my intention nor do i believe i implied that. It is just my opinion.

I absolutely love horror movies and watch a ton of depraved ****. It speaks nothing of who i am, so i pass 0 judgement on others on that front.
