****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (3 Viewers)

Well SF let us down. I would have loved to gone in to this game with a chance to tie it up with New Orleans. Today is going to suck. I am 5 hours from home and I have a long bid meeting to attend. I should make it home just before the game starts though.
Actually I'm thrilled with the outcome. If we're that good we take care of business on our own.

1. Seattle 10-1

2. NO 8-3

3. Chicago 6-4 / 3-4

4. Philly 6-5

5. Carolina 6-3 / 6-2

6. Detriot 6-4 / 5-2

7. SF 6-4 / 3-3

8. Arizona 6-4 / 4-4

Even if we happen to trip up tonite, we still hold a playoff spot.

8.

Interesting. Figured the loyalties would have been with a regional team -- Dolphins, Falcons, etc.

Edit: I'm bad at geography. Are the Redskins even closer?
My best guess, (growing up 45 min from Charlotte) for most fans in NC.

1. Cowboys (NC fans lived vicariously through the NFC East, I think. Redskins on a lot and everyone's parents ended up choosing sides in this rivalry, going with the Cowboys a little more often)

2. Redskins

After that, you're looking at the common set of favorites for bandwagoners. Many of these allegiances were formed in the 60s and 70s, then passed down to children.

3. Steelers

4. Some mix of Dolphins, 49ers, Packers, Broncos

Falcons somewhere in latter half of the top 10 probably. Although close, they also played in the NFC West getting clobbered by the 49ers. Until Vick, I'm not sure I ever ran into any Falcons fans in NC.

Being thrilled that New Orleans won their game is weird. Not only is New Orleans a division rival, the Panthers are chasing them for 1st place.

I cannot wait for this game tonight. Very eager to see Carolina follow up their road win @SF with a MNF home game against NE. THey win tonight, I think it only confirms what many folks who are following them closely already know…this is not the team you want to draw in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Now Carolina needs to of course make the playoffs but they are going thru some of the tougher teams right now. The offense needs more, wish they would give DWill a steady diet of 15-17 carries a game but you can't get upset over it, they simply never will. They have a lot of talent in the backfield, WRs are a problem but Tedd Ginn has been a shot in the arm for them. They should send that guy long on every play, run him until his legs fall off and every once in a while chuck it to him to keep the defenses honest. LaFell should be the intermediate with Olsen running across and I would start using Steve Smith on shorter routes, he is aging but he can make plays and I think they should be getting him the ball in space 5-7 yards down the field and let him take off from there.

The defense is something to admire if you like defenses, good solid clean hits, can't wait to see Carolina in person down here against Miami.

Rip Tommy a new one tonight, this is gonna be a war and New England better be ready for a good old fashioned back alley brawl because they're gonna get all they can handle and more tonight.

We play them twice and they go to Seattle. We control our destiny.

That said, I'm not getting greedy and will be more than happy with the #5 spot. NO beating SF means we're still in the 5 spot even if we lose tonite.

Way to go Panthers, incredible game, easily the best NFL game I have watched all season, maybe the last 5 seasons. Big hits, big plays, big time NFL football. I doubt the Super Bowl will be as entertaining.

What a game.

I'm liking the trend...Cam comes up small and the defense dominates. Defense underwhelms and Cam comes up huge. Great to see this team not unravel like years past.

MoP - Charlotte native. Flying down with my Fins fiancée for the game. Where do you tailgate? We are staying in South Beach but would meet you for a beer Saturday in SoBe or Sunday at the stadium

What a game. Tough one to be there for with my Brady/Gronk/Vereen combo, which just came up short. Huge win though. Cam looked like Va Tech Vick out there a couple of times.

 We usually sneak in to the little snake river that runs along the stadium, quick jog across just 1 reserved parking lot however the tailgating there is kind of meh.

We'll work on this, hit up my PM or vice versa. Sec 122, lower bowl 10-12 rows up in the corner, best seats IMO in the stadium.

We're gonna get waxed but I really think Carolina can do some serious damage this year and I want to see them in person.

Really proud of this team tonight. There were multiple times tha I doubted the team merely out of habit of being burned in close games so many times in the past.

It's sad that this game is going to be overshadowed by the PI call/non-call, because otherwise Carolina would be the entire focus of the national media today. Instead, there is just another excuse why the Panthers aren't "legit". Oh well, this team likes playing with a chip on their shoulder.

I'm a little worried about the next two weeks. I think Miami and Tampa Bay are both playing at a higher level than their record suggests and I don't want the Panthers to be looking ahead to their showdowns with New Orleans. I have faith that the staff will have them ready, but these games have"trap" written all over them.

With lafell playing like a #2, this team has the makeup of a team that can go far in the playoffs. As a lions fan, this is the team I fear most other than Seattle.

I'm on board. Exciting times to be in Charlotte, loving what I'm seeing. We have seen glimpses of this coming together over the past couple years; it feels like the parts are finally meshing and the team is starting to scratch its potential. There is still room for growth but right now I think Carolina may have the best defense in football, and certainly the most explosive offense from any of the other defensive-dominate teams.

That stadium was rockin' !!!!! Easily the loudest game I've ever been to there including the beginning of the AZ playoff game...notice I said BEGINNING :bag:

I don't care what the buzz in the national media is today about the ending of the game. It was a great game, and I seriously doubt anyone is questioning if the Panthers are legit at this point.

How are we judging that statement? New Orleans and Seattle are both top 5 defenses right now, and are both at least as explosive as Carolina on offense.

The Panthers may have the best combination of offense and defense; so if that's what you mean

Coming out of half time I was thinking the offense is going to have to win this one. The defense just seemed a little out of sorts. Brady will do that to you. Cam was really on and the highlight reel scramble was amazing. Can't coach that. And that final drive was really all you could ask for. Took a lot of time off the clock and got the touchdown.

Yeah I think we got away with one on the non-call. It was PI IMO. But I am sure that the Pats have benefited from a call or two here and there. At the end of the day it's a win. So we have now had two close games. The defense won one and the Cam put together a game winning drive to win the other. Not sure what questions are really left other than can this team wrest the NFC South from New Orleans. And the only way to do that is to keep winning.

when I think of the Saints, I think of a team that wins with offense first. The fact they have a nice defense too is gravy, but they win because of Drew Brees.

Seattle - here is a team with a nasty D and a good O, but IMO the Panthers O is more explosive. I can't back this up with stats (frankly, didn't realize the Seahawks are 2nd in the league in points), it's my perception and I base that on Carolina having more playmakers. a healthy Harvin may tip the scale though. in terms of explosiveness, Cam>Wilson, Smith> Tate, rest of Car's WR's = Seattle WR's, Olsen > Miller, Lynch > Deangelo/Stewart... that's how I see it anyways.

I haven't read or seen any comments on the last play, but as I was watching it, I though "uncatchable". Had Brady thrown the ball and hit Luke with it, the PI would be called all day every day.

I wonder if BassNBrew will continue to be thrilled with New Orleans winning games.

I was surprised that BB didn't go for it on 4th and 1 on the Carolina 8 with 6:36 left in the game. He chose to kick a FG instead, and go up by 3.

There was still at least illegal contact before the pass was thrown. There was a call that should have been made there. But like I said we aren't the first and we won't be the last to benefit from a call or non-call this season. We have been on the other end of a few. And something no one is mentioning is they would have had to score on one play with no time left. That call doesn't assure a win.

Didn't they lose when they went for it earlier in the game? I think he had to take the points there.

Well they have to go to Seattle and we get them twice. If we can get some help from Seattle and at least split with them we should have a shot at the South.

 Big step forward for Cam last night in his maturity as a QB. I don't think he leads that last drive in past years. He ran when he had to and was on target. Good play calling by Shula too. But that was Cam's show.

I love that they pressured Brady on the last drive as opposed to going prevent and letting him march down the field.

I also loved seeing Charles Johnson come back into the game. Could have been a huge injury.

No way could Gronk come back for that pass. He would have had to go through the guy who intercepted it. It is the same thing if Brady would have air mailed it into the stands. Uncatchable is uncatchable. Good no call. Brady should have thrown a better ball.

I could see holding on Luke, but that is a 5 yard penalty, one more play. So it wouldn't have been on the one yard line. It still would have taken another miracle.

When CAR called timeout all I could think of was triple team Gronk. Don't let him beat you.

Well they don't know how bad he is hurt yet. He is getting an MRI. He came back in to gut it out as he said and to give the D a lift when it needed it. And it showed. The defense got a lot more pressure in that final drive on Brady.

Cam is a little better than Wilson and more explosive.

Otherwise, once you add Harvin to the mix, Seattle is better everywhere on offense except TE.

Overall I'll take Carolina in a close match. Too bad they don't play this year until the playoffs.

Earlier in the game they didn't convert on 4th and 2 on the Panther 35, but they got a 1st down due to a Panther hands to the face penalty. Their offense got their groove going more in the second half, and I'm surprised BB didn't go for it on the Panther 8 yard line on 4th and 1.

I suspect it would have gone the other way if Lester wasn't able to intercept it so easily. Just watched Brady's post game presser and he seemed to understand why the call was what it was. It's fun watching Steve Young twist himself into knots trying to convince the world of how terrible a call it was. At best, it's a 50/50 shot and I have no real sympathy for NE given the tuck rule and spygate.

Carolina played Seattle in the first game of the season. Seattle won 12-7. DeAngelo fumbled on the Seattle 8 yard line with a little over 5 minutes left in the game, and that put the nail in their coffin for that game. I haven't watched enough Seattle to comment on them, but Carolina is a much better team than they were at the beginning of the season in all facets of the game.

The WRs stepped up last night...Laffel was that possession WR everyone said he could be, but I agree....they need to address WR in this draft. WIth all the talent coming out it's a no brainer.

With a night to sleep on it, I've come around to think something should've been called. No way Gronk was ever catching that pass, so, like you, I have no sympathy.

Most importantly, CAR outplayed NE last night. Cam was great (though, he's got to start getting more accurate on those short throws), and the defense was great.

Offense and defense both coming through on the final drives for each side was good to see.

:bag: I was just looking at the remaining schedule.

Harvin helps a lot, but Seattle has OL issues, so maybe that's a wash?

FWIW, Bleacher report has Carolina as the #6 team behind Denver, Seattle, New Orleans, Kansas City and Indianapolis. Seems right to me, but I'll probably take the Panthers over the Saints right now.

I loved loved LOVED that last drive by Cam and the offense. No panic, sheer determination and confidence. Awesome.

Such as the non calls on the leg whip or the head butt.

The leg whip guy did apologize after the game.

You guys think you can make a run with Cam like SF did last season with CK?
If the team keeps playing this way I don't see why we can't. I think Cam is actually a better QB than Kaep.
They both need to prove their high-level of play is sustainable. Cam does look more in control and tempered with the short passing game recently. The way the defense is playing I wouldn't ask him to do anymore than that like SF did with Kaep. Thats not a crime, Russel Wilson does the same thing in Sea. Maybe Cam isn't a franchise guy, but I'm sure you guys wouldn't mind a SB run. And why the hell doesn't Ted Ginn get 5-10 touches a game? Wow.. He might be the difference in becoming a solid offense. He's difficult to defend. I considered him a bust, but he caught my attention in the preseason.

Since week 2:

6.5 FF PPG (10.9 PPR) on 4.4 rec. for 51.2 yards and 0.22 TDs on 8.3 targets = S. Smith

6.5 FF PPG (9.1 PPR) on 2.6 rec. for 44.6 yards and 0.33 TDs on 4.2 targets = Ginn

Ginn is a bit of a pass dropper still. But they are trying to take shots with him when they can. They would love to get it in his hands more. I really think they should start letting him run some screens and maybe a reverse or two. A guy that fast they should see how many different ways they can use him to gash a team.
