Looking into a pair of for-life, or close to it, killer shoes to wear with jeans/khakis. I've gone through not as nice ones, and just want one great pair, willing to spend for them + restorations over the life of the shoes.

Thoughts on these, I know they're Alden's and pretty expensive, but I'd plan to re-sole/have for at least a decade (like an investment in quality). Kind of dig these bluchers, think they're versatile enough wear with just about anything?

Nice, but a little too brown and formal for my liking if you're looking for a versatile dress up and down brogue. I like the slightly lighter tan color and styling of these...

Thanks man, I'll look at these too. No immediate rush for me, just want something once fall rolls around.

Nordstroms anniversary sale started today.

Allen Edmonds Strand for $240 is tough to beat but only offered in Walnut.

Much prefer the OP's.

Really don't like the ones offdee linked.

I don't know. Both of those selections (offdee's and the Allen Edmonds) still look too formal for jeans and khakis.

I'd look into the "buck" style. Something like this-- https://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/shoes/oxfords/PRDOVR~43275/43275.jsp?color_name=boulder

I am serious about getting a nice pair of leather shoes, but if I had to get 1 additional pair for versatility/to give the leathers a breather, it's definitely bucks in some shade of brown. Like the Sahara shade, will definitely keep these on the list.

Only issue with Bucks... which I like a lot... are that I see them being tied to this year, when they've had a major resurgence. I think they might seem dated within a year or two, moreso than those first wingtips.

IMO, the wingtips you first listed can go casual really well- the soles make them less formal. But they can dress up too- just not too much.

Thanks man, I appreciate you pointing that out. I'd much rather make a big purchase on something a little more boring/conservative that won't be tied to a trend, and will always "just look good" in a timeless way. I had bucks in HS, they were nice but I haven't owned any since. Kind of hate that they're trendy now around the time of my re-entry point, because they "should" be timeless if worn correctly. Will dwell on that, but thanks again for pointing that out.

man bucks have been around since the 1800's. they aren't a "quick fashion" item.
They are probably referring to the colorful rubber soles, which doesn't exactly scream timeless. Popular now though.

I agree that wingtips are a good choice for jeans and khakis (preferably chinos). Personally not a fan of longwings though. Might be better on smaller feet.

there are like 3 things availble for men. and they slowly cycle in and out of style/trend. you can take the approach that none of them really go out of style and just keep wearing them, or try to stay current and wear what the cool kids are wearing.

nobody's saying they'll disappear- but right now (last year/this year) they're in-trend, which tells me that in another year or so they'll seem dated and closely tied to being out-of-trend. but yeah- I don't see anybody looking at bucks like they would a members' only jacket or jerri curls.

if he can pull it off, why can't rick james?

New job = new style questions for me. In my past job, I was frequently formally dressed, suit/tie/dress shirt minimum. Now I'm going to be wearing a polo shirt most days and haven't done so before in a work environment. In terms of pants, I'm thinking chinos are better suited than dress slacks? Also, the tuck/untuck thing. If I'm wearing a polo shirt out on Friday night, I am not tucking it in, in a work setting, I'm not so sure.

Also, the company provides a couple logo'd polo shirts that I'll wear a lot of the time, the ones I've seen others wearing are black, any pant options aside from med/dark gray or black?

TIA.

Gonna be going to an office more the next few months. Need to get a few new pairs of shoes and belts to mix it up a bit. Go to shoe are a pair of black Eccos. I'm all about comfort. Will not sacrifice comfort for style. Looking for quality shoes that provide both. Thinking I need maybe a nice brown/tan shoe for sure. Thoughts? Maybe a cordovan too? Also would like to mix up style a bit. Current have laces. Maybe a buckled pair?

I'm confused how one person could be debating between these two pairs. Opposite ends of the :style: spectrum.

The Eccos are terrible, but you'll probably like them because they are what you are used to in comfort. The AE will eventually be comfortable but require a decent amount of breaking in. No rubber sole there.

Disclosure: I'm wearing the very similar AE Neumok today.

First ones are awful and square toed. The AEs are decent looking if you find them comfortable, though they are a more casual shoe with the stitching. That zappos price on them isn't good.
Not a big fan of square toe or mixing brown stitching on a black shoe.

JS - are you just looking for something different than you might normally buy for work?

I work in a business casual setting. It is extremely rare that I see an untucked polo, and I generally think it looks sloppy with chinos/slacks. Just my opinion though.

As far as black shirts, I've done black shirts with tan slacks, but black belt and shoes. But, I'm not sure if this is ok.

Something new (as of June I guess)... the Allen Edmonds shoe bank is no available online. Previously you had to email one of the stores to find out what was available in your size. No more.

Hold off on purchasing though. They have a sale coming.

From August 21st through September 1, savings of 15-35% off ALL factory-second shoes. Plus, save on discontinued belts and other select accessories. Limited to on-hand inventory only. See what is available in your size at www.shoebank.com

Agreed on no untucked with chinos/slacks. I'd only go untucked with jeans and even that depends on the shirt.

It bothers me when I see the black shirt/belt/shoes combo with khakis. Turrible. Might be more ok with tan slacks... can't recall noticing. For me at least the shoes are the big problem.

Seems like charcoal or light gray pants would be best (or jeans if acceptable). Not black, Johnny Cash.

FTR, my tan slacks don't have pleats, if that helps at all.

Black shirts can go with anything.

Get some dark brown, copper, blue, maroon, green etc pants. Think military shades of those colors. Nice way to add color, but keep it professional.

I agree on the pants, not a big fan of the polo with dress pants look. As for tucked vs untucked, I would tuck at first as it's the safer bet. Once you see how others dress and get a better feel for the place, you might feel ok to untuck.

Guys - I'm obviously not the king of fashion by any stretch. But I do try to stay current. Older guy, but wearing flat front slacks, no cuffs and fitted shirts. I've never been a shoe guy. Trying to get to the next level and compliment my wardrobe as I have to go to an office more now. So I have bought some new slacks, new shirts, and now need to round out with shoes/belts. I'm one of those guys who wears black shoes way too much. Trying to change that. And I know Eccos aren't at the top of the fashion food chain. That being said, I HATE shoes that take a long time to break in. Deal breaker for me. Trying walking miles in shoes at McCormick Place in Chicago at a convention. So I need versatility, style, and comfort. I don't want outrageous. Multi-colored oxfords are just not me. But I want a very good brown/tan shoe that I can also dress down with jeans. Just go AE with those? Where's the best place to buy?Also- is that enough or do I need another pair/style/color? I don't want to spend $600 on a shoe either. I'll spend in the $200's or $300's max.

We're within a year age wise and I'm in the same place, looking forward to opinions.

I have one black wing tip and one plain dark brown I alternate at work. Evenings and weekends I have a variety of walking shoes, sneakers, deck shoes, sandals, et al, but my two basic pairs of business shoe haven't changed in 20 years.

JS - curious if you wear loafers of laces. I've always been the latter but probably going loafers this fall.

I like loafers because fat/lazy. Otherwise, I hate them.... even though I "get" that they're in style now. The fabulous interior designer men in my office all wear them.
