The Floor game show (1 Viewer)

So the screens behind each contestant…
When the duel is going the player only sees an image when it’s their turn (to alert them it’s their guess)? So when it’s not their turn the screen they are looking at is blank?

My wife and I are enjoying this as a show to fall asleep to, but I feel like the popularity of this show reflects badly on the US. We went from Jeopardy to a show where people see a picture of a dog and are rewarded for correctly identifying it as a dog. It's a game show for people with severe learning disabilities.

Not sure on this. If I recall from last year, one contestant let quite a few seconds go by because they did not realize it was their turn. But they might have changed things. I wondered last year if they contestants ever got the correct answer when they passed. It didn't seem like it last year. But clearly this year they are because a few contestants have had "doh" moments when they see the correct answer.

The one woman that didn’t realize it was her turn made a comment like “I saw the pic over her shoulder and just thought it was her turn, duh’”

Image of a desk. "Seat" is acceptable answer.
Image of a chicken coop. "Chicken house" is acceptable.
Image of olives. "Olives" is not acceptable, it must be "black olives".
I watched a couple since I watched it last season and man, the arbitrary matches are annoying. Also, it seems like sometimes one person gets easy ones and others do not.

It kind of pissed me off for that one close match on acronyms. The annoying professor that got cleaned up said Too Long Don’t Read for TLDR. I’m sorry but didn’t read <> don’t read. That’s OK but another guy needs to say Bonobo instead of chimpanzee even though it’s also known as a Pygmy chimpanzee. They weren’t saying Lop or European rabbit or Cottontail for the type of rabbit. That black olive one was the same thing. The specificity is so arbitrary and it often is the difference in the game.

I might keep on watching but the same issues from last season are still there.

The extra 5 seconds for winning three in a row isn't quite working either. There is no advantage to staying up on the podium and risking elimination. The best option is still to hide on the floor and hope you never have to go up there until the end.

Again more arbitrary answers. In the category Compound Words, it shows a cross, and a road. Obviously it's "crossroads", but the lady says "cross street" which ISN'T A COMPOUND WORD!

And I 100% agree with @Gally the time bonus isn't much of an advantage, especially because it's a 1 time use. Of the players that have earned one so far, they either go back to the floor (a large portion of floor) and still get targeted, or they use it successfully once and now don't have the advantage anymore. One guy opted not to use it and lost, so it never helped him. It should be 5 extra seconds for every subsequent match after earning it, and I wouldn't mind seeing it grow to 10 seconds after X wins. And you shouldn't have to win 3 matches consecutively to earn it. 3 wins (at any time) = 5 seconds forever, maybe 7 wins = 10 seconds forever. The show obviously wants to incentivize players to stay and play rather than hide on the floor...but 5 seconds once ain't much of an incentive.

I was disappointed they allowed cross street to count. That wasn't correct and is different as you said it isn't a compound word.

The other thing that irks me is there are so many times where someone's clock is almost out, but they say the answer with 1 second left, and it doesn't count, the clock hits zero. They're very likely to lose anyway, unless the other person blanks out and their clock hits 0 on the very next turn...but I swear the timer is really only 44 seconds long, not 45.

That gal that passed on every single question has to be the worst player in any game history
Figured it was a matter of time before someone pulled the 0-fer on a topic they don't know.
Thought it would be something like failed politicians or periodic table though.

But wasn't she the one that challenged and selected the category? Kinda had it on in the background and wasn't paying close attention

Don’t they give $ for having the most squares at the end of each day?

Yes. I bet she was thinking "Michael Jackson!" "Duran Duran!" and not "Olivia Rodrig-who now?"

I would have gone 0-fer as well. And I suspect if she had gotten even one of those that dude would have lost as well. He was definitely ****ting himself worried about that topic. He dodged a bullet there imo.

Yes but it doesn't compare to winning the big prize. The risk of getting booted doesn't match the reward of just hanging out until the end for the big prize (IMO)

Fair enough.

Despite the new wrinkles, it played out the same way as the first season did. Both finalists were people who won 1 to 3 battles early and then sat in or near a corner and waited, safe from the randomizer. One benefited from nobody wanting to battle over the periodic table, which seems like a weird thing for people who are allegedly trivia buffs to be spooked about.

Are they actually trivia buffs though? Seems like all reality shows where they cast personalities/demographics and they just claim they’re knowledgeable in one specific area. And many weren’t even good at that.

I would say they are not trivia buffs. Just random game show type personality people. Some of the categories are just dumb and filler. Accessories. They just show a bunch of items and its a race to say them as fast as you can and hope you don't get stumped on one or two.

Yep, the best strategy for sure is to get lost early on the board away from everyone and then never have to risk being challenged until the end. $20K for having the most land isn't really a good enough incentive to try and risk being eliminated to go for it. Also, having some scary obscure category seems like another good strategy going in. So many people were afraid of the Periodic Table but really didn't think about what it would actually be like. Obviously the guy knew the symbols but those aren't that hard to study and figure out but nobody wanted to even try. Worked out perfectly for him.

This idea has a potential but there are enough flaws in execution that it becomes boring to some degree. Not sure what to do to change it up.

I posted the below earlier in the thread after completion of season one. Still stand by it..

I think the solution is some sort of safety after winning a certain number of duels. Possibly after 4-5 duel wins you are safe and can't be picked to duel again until final 20. This promotes people from not just camping out and waiting and also keeps the big guns around for the final group. I'd imagine then in the final 20 you'd probably end up with 10 or so that were safe and have a proven track record of playing and winning.

To track it, just show number of wins inside there floor owned and when they get to safety, their land turns red. Easy.

And for the challenging land lock, just treat it as an extension when there are no options…whoever the land lock touches is now open to challenge.

Watched this last night after the Super Bowl. Did anyone else catch Brian O'Halloran of Clerks fame as one of the contestants? And his category is convenience store items :lmao:
Did they change up the format any from the last session? It was still missing something to make it a bit more strategic. Unless there is a drastic change the proper strategy is to hide in a corner and not be at risk to go home.

I didn't see any changes mentioned from Season 2 format, so looks like 3 consecutive wins = 5 sec time boost is still the only real change from S1.

Well if they do the best of three in the final that was new last season also

The preview for the season makes it sound like there is something new coming.

First episode of S3 had a mix of hiding and playing. Very end of the episode's preview of the season seems to have an aggressive player on tap.
They mention the contestant won 9 duels, winningest player in the game's history (easy to do with 3 seasons), and doesn't like to leave the battle. Another whale throws themselves at them as a sacrifice?

After watching the first episode I will predict that the guy that one a battle and ended up with trees (I think that was what I remember his category being, but I could be wrong) and then went back to the board. He is located in the front, so he is kind of locked away from others and has very few possible challengers. He is the exact type of situation that the winner came from each of the first two seasons. Win one duel early so they aren't eligible for the randomizer, kind of in a corner near an edge so not many possible challengers and stays in the shadows until the end then wins a couple duels to take home the prize.

Well if they do the best of three in the final that was new last season also
very true, that was new last year, and I would guess is still going to happen this year as well.

I still want an answer to a question I had last year though. When they're down to the final two players and two categories, they play a best of three and use both remaining categories. If they split the first two duels/categories, what would the category be for the 3rd game? Rob didn't say last year, and we didn't get to see it happen since the guy (forgot his name) won the first two games so there was no game 3.

The Mountains to 'mountains that are in the ocean' - errr, Islands, guy?

The guy with the European History category who’s a Jeopardy champion? He’s not just any Jeopardy champion.

He’s Dave Madden, who won 19 games in his original run, which for a long time was second-most to Ken Jennings.

Being a Jeopardy champion might actually hurt him in this competition. Sometimes I think a 5 yr old would be better off trying to answer the questions.

I got kind of aggravated on the "pets" category. They would put a picture of a cat up and the answer was cat. Then they put up a picture of dog and wanted the answer to be Shih Tzu Inu. Just no consistency.

I recognized him from Jeopardy and knew he was a very good player, but I couldn't remember how many Jeopardy games he had won.

Ep 2
Pretty cool category for - the 'clerk' from Clerks

Kind of glad the high horse met the ground.
Rob: So, are you excited to play the Floor?
Dante: I'm not even supposed to be here today!

BTW, pretty sure that's not the first time Rob has worked with a mother-daughter combo.

A few people playing in episode 2 completely froze, including at least one who was defending their own category.

It’s stunning to me that at this point, people are still not following the obvious strategy of “if you can’t think of it after a few seconds, pass.”

It's always a treat when a contestant passes and then thinks that means it's not their turn anymore so they sit there waiting for the other person to answer. Then they realize the F-ed up and answer real quick

Dante from Clerks is unfortunately sucking me into this show. How do these people end up getting their initial categories?

It's never been explained on the broadcast. I presume they pick them but I don't know for sure.
I think there has to be a list of topics to choose from because a lot of these quote-unquote experts don't know a damn thing about their categories.

My only question is when do they know their category and how long do they have before the show tapes to study.

3.
Liked the category Islands as the show made it 3 'associations' and they had to guess the island. It was a new way of doing it.

Mother/Daughter team lost one.
Bachelorette husband/wife team lost one.

Forgetting it's their turn hurt some more - particularly Airport Codes.
Lots of close battles. Hammer not good enough for Sledge Hammer.

Randomizer working overtime, but hiding caught one immediately.
Never got a chance to challenge Dante, err Brian - gets $20k more

4.
Everyone hiding previous episode and the start this one. Rob: Who wished the Randomizer picked you? Raise hands.
For the first time, the Randomizer will select 'volunteers' this round only. Oooh, me likey. But probably only works this episode now that people can stay quiet and not have false bravado. About 12 raised their hand.

And back to the floor most of the episode.

Agriculture expert got all the long descriptions and tough ones. Challenger got the singular words.
Nice Math battle.

Whale Dante/Brian finally challenged with the time boost. Up to $60k now - most for the 'nightly prize' category. Seemed to have genuine tears (though he's an actor).

67 remain
5.
Aggressive players this episode - finally.

A contender arises.

Another forgot it's their turn.

Can't blame them - camera person has an infatuation with the Bachelorette.

LOL - Dante/Brian gets the final battle of the night as he's got everything around the randomizer pick. For $20k, no other options for the 'island of Wyatt'! $80k to the whale - 4 weeks in a row!

59 remain

There just is no reason to want to battle. The best approach is to get lucky enough to never be called and allowing the randomizer to only pick from those that want to be picked will only increase that approach. Hide in a corner and hope to win two out of three battles at the end.

I am not sure what they could do to change that up. Maybe have the total prize be divided so that winning a battle gets you money. For example, if the total prize pool is $250K and it takes 100 battles to get down to 1 player make each battle worth $1500 and the last man standing gets the extra $100K.
