The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (6 Viewers)

This was quite the late round documentary drafting run (last 5 taken in the category):

43.13 - The Keepers (Tolstoy) - 13 pts

44.01 - Finding Neverland (Yo Me) - 14 pts

44.02 - When the Levee Breaks (KP) - 12 pts

44.12 - High Score (Rick) - 15 pts

45.01 - Tiger King (Hov) - 9 pts
For some reason, people seemed confused and a bit scared.

No kidding,  I kept getting re-buffed on my selections and finally gave up and selected something I watched and loved.

So for you folks who are perusing the board on New Year's Eve, you get a treat - SCI FI RANKINGS!!!

I asked for lists and @Yo Mama and @Hov34 responded. Really appreciate it guys, and you were very helpful. In posting all three scores I mixed them up for each pick because a few times I tip my hand in the comments saying I was the high/low guy or whatever (so if you surmise that I'm the third number because of my comment, I may be the first on the next selection).

I also did not 100% rank by adding up the scores - in the end, it's my list, and I asked for help not to fully add scores but more or less to keep myself in check. Still, they do generally follow the score totals, and I was pleased to see that our lists were fairly close, especially on the top and bottom.

1 pt -  Heroes – (15, 14, 15) – Did not score well in the aggregate. None of us like this all that much. Sorry drafter.

2 pts - The Prisoner (16, 16, 12) – A little too slow, and hard to get into (and this is coming from a guy who loves the original Solaris).

3 pts - Devs (13, 13, 14) – Again, sometimes scifi can be slow, and this was definitely that. I thought maybe I was missing it, but my two helpers confirmed my low score.

4 pts - The Orville (9, 14, 15) – I’ll tip my hand here that I am the higher score. But I’m looking at it through the “nostalgia for STTNG” lens. Taken on it’s own, I suppose it’s good, but not great.

5 pts - Fringe (13, 10, 9) – Starting to get tough, as these are all pretty decent shows, starting with this one. It started slow, but it got pretty good.

6 pts - The Handmaids Tale (8, 11, 12) – It’s definitely good. Maybe it should be higher.

7 pts - MST3K (16, 5, 11) – Again, hand is tipped – I was the high score, and this is my pick. It’s a legit show (200+ episodes, with a half hour of original ongoing story content for each episode). But still, the main draw is riffing movies, so despite my love for it, it scores here.

8 pts - The Expanse (6, 9, 11) – Cool premise, and enjoyable show. Definitely the top of the bottom half.

9 pts - Quantum Leap (8, 6, 12) – For a time, it seemed like this was always on, no matter what channel you turned to. Again, cool premise that endured.

10 pts - Lost (4, 10, 7) – It was VERY good at first, then got silly, then got sillier. But the strength of its first few seasons cannot be denied.

11 pts - Black Mirror (6, 5, 7) – Basically a modern Twilight Zone. Really like this.

12 pts – Westworld (8, 3, 5) – It could have been garbage, but it wasn’t.

13 pts – The X-Files  (2, 7, 3) – Was riveting TV for years. Enjoyed this a lot.

14 pts – Battlestar Galactica  (3, 1, 4) – Fantastic reboot. Hated the end, and the whole “are cylons machines or not?” got a little odd, but you can’t deny it was a lot of fun. The original (which I loved) would have scored around 9 or 10.

15 pts – Star Trek (2, 1, 4) – Groundbreaking. Viewed now it’s a little cheesy, but it completely paved the way for everyone else.

16 pts  - Star Trek TNG  (5, 1, 2) Simply the best Sci Fi Series of all time. Yes I’m the 1 here, and the numbers don’t quite add up. But it’s my list, and this wins.

This was a pretty good list - bottom wasn't great, but from 6-7 on they were all good shows. Some notable omissions, either not drafted or put somewhere else:

Babylon 5 (not drafted) would have probably scored around 8-10. That was a good show. Same for Firefly (drafted for Westerns). I already said the original Battlestar would be around ten (I would have it ahead of both I just mentioned). Twilight Zone would be top 5. I don't want to say what would happen w/ GoT here - glad it was in the horror category - it fit there a little better. Lost in Space would have been upper bottom half. 7-ish.

Was going to draft this, but I was sure it was released in theaters originally.  Apparently it premiered on TV and then was released in theaters... dang it.

You know, you are kind of right.

In reading the wiki page, it does seem like the premier "movie" was first released in Canada/etc before US TV (and then US theater afterwards). However, I would have allowed it for two reasons. First, it does seem to always have been meant for TV release. The international theater release may have been to test it. Plus, whatever format the original movie was released in, the "series" that followed is clearly TV - there were 20-something episodes aside from the 2-3 part movie.

I was 12 or 13 when this came out. This show was on a Star Wars level with my peer group.

Wish I had known that, I looked at Buck Rogers too, but that was released in the theater.

Looks good!

My biggest disagreement was that I would have switched MST3K ansd Westworld.

I always loved MST3K and thought that Westworld as a whole was surprisingly bad.

On a Sci Fi tangential note, anyone else watching the Twilight Zone marathon on SYFY channel?

Some classic episodes coming up. At 1pm ET, “Two” with Charles Bronson and Elizabeth Montgomery. Episodes airing later today include “It’s a Good Life,” “To Serve Man”, and William Shatner’s “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” at 10.

I thought Westworld's first season was very, very good. So I'm kind of going off of that.

I am with you on MST3K - to me, it's the funniest thing ever. But in the end, it's my pick (so I am biased) and I could see people complaining that the big part of its appeal is riffing movies, which makes it borderline unfair. But like I pointed out in my brief writeup, there was about a half hour of original, ongoing, and definitely sci-fi related content in each episode (invention exchanges, songs, skits, etc.), so in some ways, it is a legit "show".

He judges most of the categories.....hahahah
Hey now, in the categories I judged (or helped judge) my picks came in right around where I drafted them. I couldn’t even get a 16 out of my first rounder in the Sci Fi category. (Not bitter or anything).

Speaking of judging, I’ll be doing the Teen shows over the next couple days. I welcome any additional rankings - @tuffnutt already volunteered.  This is going to be a tough one looking at the list (besides Freaks and Geeks of course).

Animated Shows

1 point - Bob’s Burgers

I actually do like this show more than I thought I would when it was first advertised, but it’s just too lightweight to be placed above anything else drafted.

2 points - The Justice League

It had potential to be much better than its execution which is generally how I feel about most animated Super Hero shows.

3 points - Rick and Morty

Was originally written as a Back to the Future parody but developed into a smart and funny show.

4 points – Archer

I like the comic book style artwork and the writing but I just can’t move it up further.

5 points - Ren and Stimpy

Short lived peak and more gross than funny.

6 points - Beavis and Butthead

Was huge at it’s peak, but did not stand the test of time. The humor is childish, crude and a bit one-dimensional.

7 points - Bojak Horseman

A show that makes you care about a horse is hard to pull off but this show can be as laugh-out-loud funny as any show

8 points - Futurerama

I personally like this better than some that are ranked above it but it just didn’t make the cultural impact or enjoy the longevity of shows like South Park or Family Guy.

9 points - Family Guy

A semi-ripoff of the Simpsons, but laid the basis for many live action shows which rely on “day-dream - sequences” and pop-culture interjections into the script.

10 points - Batman, The Animated Series

Many consider Mark Hammil’s portrayal of the Joker as the quintessential interpretation.

11 points - South Park

Crudely drawn and crude in nature but there’s no denying its longevity and impact.

12 points - The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show

The grandfather of meta-humor in animation.

13 points - Avatar, The Last Airbender

A beautifully animated and written show. My step son wrote his college admissions essay based around a quote from the show.

14 points - The Flintstones

The first prime-time animated show which is still engrained in pop-culture today.

15 points - Spongebob Squarepants

Has been on the air for 20 years (13 seasons) and is equally as funny for kids as it is for adults.

16 points - The Simpsons

Probably the biggest no-brainer 16 pointer in the entire draft.

beautifully judged. thank you for low-weighting all the underwritten, underdrawn metadreck of the last decade's animcoms and giving Spongebob and Moose&Squirrel the love they deserve, DocOc

Sorry, Pitchfork :(

But yeah ... Bob's Burgers is a regular in our living room. Thought I'd give the show a little love in this thing. It has actually carved out a nice little pop culture niche -- it's lasted a decade now, and while it's not The Simpsons, it's at least in that Futurama and Family Guy tier in meatspace.

Agreed.  Bob's Burgers is so freakin' good, but most people won't give it the time of day for some reason.

And as for Rick and Morty being so low...   I'll be back.

I like BB, in fact I’m watching a it now. It was just hard to rank it higher based on the level of the field.

Sorry about R&M as well - another good show. It’s just that the shows above it are either better, more iconic or more groundbreaking.

It's all good.  To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humor in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

Hey Doc Ock, quick question - how would Star Blazers have done for animation?  I was addicted to that show back in the late 70s.  Robotech was good too, but not as cool as a WWII battleship mounting a Wave Motion Gun!

From a nostalgia perspective I want to say at least mid-pack - but haven’t seen in it in a long time so not sure how it would hold up. It would be unique compared to the rest of the list for sure which would be in its favor.

I’m going to try and get to Villain and Action this week - I’m taking lists (and need the help), so please submit any you have.

I’m ready to do greatest show of all time- but I thought I would wait until the rest of the rankings were completed. How’s that looking?

We’ve got 10 more categories to judge. I’m hoping to have Teen out tomorrow ( @tuffnutt are you still going to send me rankings?).

We still need judges for the following:

Miniseries

Finale

Foreign

Ive already volunteered for more than my share of categories, so it would be nice for someone else to step up.

Yeah sorry. I will send rankings this evening.

I'll help with miniseries and finale.  When I first signed up to judge Yo Mama said I had to put his pick at the top of the list.  Is that still a rule?

I'm done with Miniseries.  Lot of good picks.  The Winds of War, Lonesome Dove, and When They See Us would have scored well but weren't picked.  There was one I wasn't familiar with but had seen all the others, so I had to read up on it.  Would definitely want other feedback to make sure I didn't misplace that one.

Just FYI, for judging I sorted the spreadsheet in alpha order by the name of the pick and deleted the columns that said where it was picked and who picked it.  I then filter by category to only show those picks so I don't get unfairly influenced by where something was picked.
