Thanks Jaxjokers! Well, it's nice to see the Vikings offense being aggressive right out of the gate, hope we get a good look at the running game too.I'm watching the game. Vikings first possession was 2 50 yds pass attempts, and then one short pass to Moss. 3 and out. I'll let you know how the RB's look.
Is Chapman looking good? I just got him in an auction today for $2.Yeah, so far Chapman has been the man for the Vikes. O. Smith is mostly MIA.The Vikes' OL has looked pretty solid so far opening some holes.
the best so far IMOEdit: sure wish I could delete thisHow does Ned look now? It seems he's had a couple of good carries. (Watching Box scores)
um, nevermindthe best so far IMO
I know your comment is in jest, but come on, every RB gets stuffed every now and then, just ask Barry Sanders.Onterrio Smith...SOD; SCHMUCK of the DRAFT! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: 1 attempt for 0 yds.
Nice. Showing his goaline ability.1 yard rushing TD for O. Smith.
you guys are asking the wrong question: who cares how onterrio "runs"? if he can't block he will NOT be on the field. the vikes aren't going to risk culpepper getting injured so onterrio can shake his #### on the field.here's the million dollar question: how does onterrio look as a blocker? judging from the posts here, i'd say awful. not a good sign for someone wanting to be the #1 rb.He's running the ball fine but his blocking is pitiful.
Granted, blocking skills are important for a RB to master, BUT a lack of blocking skills never seemed to keep Michael Bennett off the field despite him being a pitiful blocking back himself. Blocking is overrated for a RB in my book. If you believe blocking is more important than running, maybe we should start calling them blocking backs.Anyone wonder how good Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Franco Harris, Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett, etc. could block? Didn't think so.you guys are asking the wrong question: who cares how onterrio "runs"? if he can't block he will NOT be on the field. the vikes aren't going to risk culpepper getting injured so onterrio can shake his #### on the field.here's the million dollar question: how does onterrio look as a blocker? judging from the posts here, i'd say awful. not a good sign for someone wanting to be the #1 rb.
You mean the same Bennett whose rehab was just setback another two weeks?? Riiiiiiight. :wacko:And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.
Can't agree with you more. All excited over a 3rd quarter 1 yard TD in a pre-season game with the second string offense? And he can't block? He's got a lot to learn and the Vikings won't do it at Culpepper's expense.Man, Onterrio Smith is one guy I hope people reach for in ALL of my drafts, he'll amout to nothing more than a RBBC contributor, that stands on the sidelines to watch Moe Williams punch it in.And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.Chapman is going to be the starting RB for the first 6 to 8 games this season anyways...
I was thinking more along the lines of NEXT season. You mean the same Bennett whose rehab was just setback another two weeks?? Riiiiiiight. :wacko:And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.
No one wonders how good of a blocker Walter Payton was.For the others I am not sure of how good they were but Smith will not see the field on a full time basis unless he can block with some consistency. Bennett's value as a fantasy player and chances as a full time back last year were damaged by the fact that he was often replaced by Moe on 3rd down passing situations. At best, Smith is Bennett last year. Much more likely, he sees a fraction of what Bennett's opportunities would have been if healthy as Onterrio learns how to be a functional passing down back. Maybe later in the season (like Portis but probably much later) he emerges as more of a full time back but then Bennett's possible return might prevent such progression in touches.Anyone wonder how good Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Franco Harris, Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett, etc. could block? Didn't think so.
i heard that same thing about portis last year...Man, Onterrio Smith is one guy I hope people reach for in ALL of my drafts, he'll amout to nothing more than a RBBC contributor, that stands on the sidelines to watch Moe Williams punch it in.And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.Chapman is going to be the starting RB for the first 6 to 8 games this season anyways...
More like Bennett 2 years ago... Bennett wasn't bad last year.AFTER HE HAD A YEAR UNDER HIS BELT. But go ahead draft Smith in the early rounds - earlier the better! No one wonders how good of a blocker Walter Payton was.For the others I am not sure of how good they were but Smith will not see the field on a full time basis unless he can block with some consistency. sounds like a chapman owner if i ever ...........Man, Onterrio Smith is one guy I hope people reach for in ALL of my drafts, he'll amout to nothing more than a RBBC contributor, that stands on the sidelines to watch Moe Williams punch it in.And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.Chapman is going to be the starting RB for the first 6 to 8 games this season anyways...
Keywords here:second string.I didn't mention the second-string OL because he was facing the 2nd string defense as well.
Wasn't the D second string also here??Edited to add: Looks like I'm third in line on this one. Oh well.Onterrio Smith: He played the second half, and the thing that has not been mentioned yet in this post is that Onterrio ran behind our second string line the entire time. So his stats are even a little bit more impressive when you take that into account.
Your dislike of Onterrio Smith is apparent, but really what are you trying to prove by emphasizing that Onterrio Smith ran with the second team tonight? If I recall, Clinton Portis didn't run with the 1st team offense week 1 of last preseason. Matter of fact, I don't recall many rookie RB's who run with the first team offense in week 1 of preseason. Bottom line: Onterrio Smith strengthened his position in the RB race tonight, while the other guys did nothing to help themselves. Keywords here:second string.
100% incorrect - don't have Chapman in any leagues and don't plan on it. But given the choice (in a redraft league), I'd take Chapman or Moe Williams over Onterrio Smith in a heartbeat. There's something to be said about veteran RBs that can get the job done vs. an unproven mid-round rookie.sounds like a chapman owner if i ever ...........Man, Onterrio Smith is one guy I hope people reach for in ALL of my drafts, he'll amout to nothing more than a RBBC contributor, that stands on the sidelines to watch Moe Williams punch it in.And then when Bennett returns, he's basically a backup player.Chapman is going to be the starting RB for the first 6 to 8 games this season anyways...
But without a viable rushing game, Culpepper is toast whether someone blocks for him or not.Without Culpep, the Vikings dont stand a chance.
Huh?Smith was 12/33 with no receiving yards and 1 TD and a really bad blitz pickup. Chapman was 4/16 with 10 yards receiving. Does OSmith deserve a look with the first-team offense? Probably. Does Tice feel comfortable with him in there as the same time as CPep? I don't know.Hey. Smith had a couple of nice runs. He's definitely more of a big-play guy than Chapman or Williams. I don't think Tice will put up with his inconsistencies/weaknesses on a regular basis though. You're deluding yourself if you think that Tice isn't going to call out Smith on that "block".Personally, I think the Vikes open up the season with Chapman/M. Williams. If the team struggles, they'll work in Smith more.Bottom line: Onterrio Smith strengthened his position in the RB race tonight, while the other guys did nothing to help themselves.
