The Russia Ukraine Conflict Thread (2 Viewers)

They are told that they will fight “Americans and their allies.” Now, they are themselves located only few kilometer from the border to NATO country Norway.

Zapolyarny is border town and has until recently engaged in extensive cross-border cooperation with the neighboring Nordic country. The concert hall where the soldiers were applauding patriotic songs about Russia’s ‘divine mission’ in Donbas has itself repeatedly been site for cultural performances with Russian and Norwegian children and youth.

Back then, the tones and tunes performed were of a peaceful and friendly kind.

Meanwhile in Russia: anger and disappointment fill the studio, as the viewers are being prepared for the loss of Kherson and other territories. Host Olga Skabeeva bitterly questions why Russia was so wrong in the beginning, believing that Zelensky would run & NATO wouldn't help.
Not to be political, but I can't help but wonder if a theoretical conversation about an invasion of Ukraine came up during a private meeting between a former potus and putin.

Russia was so wrong because they believed their own propaganda and lies. Going against the power structures, even just to cast doubt wouldn't be taken well.

I know this thread isn't supposed to be about US politics, but I'm growing increasingly worried that our domestic squabbles will materially impact the actions of the combatants. Specifically, Kevin McCarthy is signaling that a GOP-controlled House will cut off aid to Ukraine. Again, the point isn't to debate the merits of this position, or how it will play out domestically. What I fear is that, between this and the coming winter in gas-starved Europe, Russia may be encouraged to try to wait the Ukrainians out and launch a new offensive in 2023. Hopefully their crumbling military situation will make it impossible for them to mount any kind of effective attack, but I suspect things aren't as dire for them as they seem at the moment, especially if they know that "help" is on the way

Waiting on the midterms gives Russia time to train conscripts and move more experienced soldiers from other areas to the front lines.

We know for a fact that Manafort was working with the Russians to undermine Ukraine. Yanukovych was a Russian stooge. Keep in mind that Russia had already invaded Ukraine by this point in Crimea and the Donbas.

Trump withheld javelin anti-tank missiles to strong-arm Zelensky into fabricating dirt on the Bidens as well. He only relented when he got caught.
The Trump campaign worked behind the scenes last week to make sure the new Republican platform won’t call for giving weapons to Ukraine to fight Russian and rebel forces, contradicting the view of almost all Republican foreign policy leaders in Washington.

Throughout the campaign, Trump has been dismissive of calls for supporting the Ukraine government as it fights an ongoing Russian-led intervention. Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, worked as a lobbyist for the Russian-backed former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych for more than a decade.

Still, Republican delegates at last week’s national security committee platform meeting in Cleveland were surprised when the Trump campaign orchestrated a set of events to make sure that the GOP would not pledge to give Ukraine the weapons it has been asking for from the United States.

Ukrainian defence minister announced that Poland delivered overall 54(!) modern self-propelled howitzer Krab produced in Poland. This information hasn’t so far been made public by Warsaw.

This is a big one. The last confirmed number was 18 Polish Howitzers Krab. Now it’s 54 – and more to come. The Ukrainian army seems to be very happy with the Polish howitzers. It seems, too, they are after intense use less susceptible to failure than other Western models.

But even the most confident predatory intelligence officer will always allow for an escape route. Intelligence officers are trained to prepare for the worst in realizing their inability to control every variable. And therein lies the opportunity for the West, but one which comes with tough choices. And that choice is not to blink, to not merely maintain the pressure against him on all fronts, but to increase it. Putin’s off ramp should not be some face-saving deal the West must choreograph that he will be perceive as weakness and therefore raise the stakes. Rather, increase the quality and quantity of arms, training, and intelligence support to Ukraine to reclaim their territory and exact an untenable cost for Putin’s campaign; engage with dissident, opposition circles within Russia and extend a lifeboat to opportunists within Putin’s inner circle and those fearful of going down with him; and fortify NATO along Russia’s borders, particularly the Baltic States. But do all this prepared to confront and respond to Putin’s use of weapons of mass destruction, should he choose that path.

In the last few days, an interview given by the new Russian commander in #Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, was reported in the media. Noting that “the situation regarding the special operation is tense”, an assessment of his campaign options going forward is required. 1/25 🧵

Iranian instructors killed in Ukraine, Israeli media says

Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to the President's Office, said on Oct. 20 that the Armed Forces of Ukraine delivered two strikes against Iranian military advisers in Ukrainian territory.

On Oct. 21, Iranian Foreign Ministry urged its citizens in Ukraine to leave the country immediately.

The ministry continues to claim that they have nothing to do with the supply of Shahed-136 kamikaze drones to Russia, adding that Tehran is ready for negotiations with Ukraine in order to “refute the accusations.”

Earlier, White House spokesman John Kirby said that the United States has evidence that the Iranian instructors are present in Russia-occupied Crimea. According to Washington, they supervise Russian drone strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian population.

The New York Times previously reported that instructors from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps arrived in occupied Crimea to assist Russian drone operators.

Russia has stepped up its air and drone strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since Oct. 10, making heavy use of Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Kyiv is considering severing diplomatic ties with Iran.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia has procured 2,400 Shahed kamikaze drones from Iran.

U.S. media reports later suggested that Iran had also agreed to transfer short-range ground-to-ground ballistic missiles to Russia.

Russia-backed authority urges civilians to leave the city of Kherson immediately

A likely reason for wanting civilians to leave is to mix them in between the military stuff that is also leaving Kherson - this will prevent Ukraine from attacking the fleeing columns
