By the way,
The Young Ones was
@John Maddens Lunchbox number one show. Thought that was worthy of pointing out.
Oh for Cliff’s sake
Thank You.
But first of all Get Smart - My #19 show.
My mother recalls that this was the first show that i would lose my shiite laughing to when i was young.
The slapstick, the silliness and the impeccably performed Maxwell Smart by Don Adams.
Now My #1 - The Young Ones
The Premise
The programme focuses on the lives of four undergraduate students who
share a house in squalid condition (with the fictitious address of 15 Credibility Street), while attending their studies at the fictional Scumbag College,
London.
The students were Vyvyan a Punk, Rik an anarchist, Neil a Hippy and Mike the cool person.
“To help make it stand out, the group opted to combine traditional sitcom style with violent
slapstick,
non-sequitur plot turns, and
surrealism. These older styles were mixed with the
working and lower-middle class attitudes of the growing 1980s alternative comedy boom, in which all the principal performers except Ryan had been involved. In addition, it was also decided that every episode, with the exception of one, would feature a live performance by a band, including
Madness, Motörhead, and The Damned. This was a device used to qualify the series for a larger budget, as variety shows attracted higher fees than comedy at the time. “
Now, why is it my #1 show? Like Fawlty Towers only 12 episodes were made. 6 in each series.
The quality of the writing and performances are great, but it’s the feel of the show. The anger and confusion of youth.
The frustration at the Thatcher government by the young was reflected in the writing and performances. The eminently quotable lines which mean nothing without the context of watching and understanding the show.
Some great lines have already been quoted.
Whenever we moved to a new house, I always said to one of my kids….”xxxxx your bedrooms on fire”. They thought me crazy.
Whenever We told people about one of our pregnancies I put on my best Vyvyan voice to say “(we’re) going to have a baby”
If I want to quote useless facts, I would say “Most marshmallows stuffed up one nostril, Toxteth O’Grady, USA 604. Worlds stickiest bogey? Ha! Tried to fool me. That's Toxteth again!
You might think this is a solo effort. Think again, fortunately a group of my friends ALL have the same opinion of the show and to this day we still find random situations to quote lines, in public, making for fun times. Its even better when a random stranger gets the refernce and joins in. Those are happening far less often.
So to the outsider, this show can seem dated in both look and style, but to me its full of nothing but happy memories and good times.
