Maybe it's because I was in the military. Maybe it was because I have combat ribbons. Maybe it's because I was stationed in Germany for years. Maybe it's because I've been to Normandy. Maybe it's because Ive been to Dachau concentration camp. Band of Brothers is an absolute MONSTER show for me. Top 3ish all time. Just can't say enough about this show. Seen it 20 plus tines. Loved it. The cast. The story. The journey. Flash. Thunder.

RIP Mr. Romano

My Granddad was an engineer in WW2. He was stationed in the Pacific. He never talked about it (as far as I know) though he did tell one story. Now that I'm older it would have been interesting to have asked him more about his experiences.

I feel like getting younger generations interested in the history of WW2 and that generation, and getting this knowledge passed down is the show’s lasting legacy. And it succeeded incredibly at this. It got 20ish year old Scoresman into it for sure.

I only wish it was more accurate a portrayal. It’s hard for me to rewatch when it got so much wrong and is passing it off as history.

This is one I just didn’t think of - would have made my list. I did list John Adams so not sure why I forgot and even better HBO limited series.

So, this was IMO, the only unknown left on the list on whether it’s included or not. I won’t spotlight just yet but the remaining 10 are assured - just need the order.

I think we could all list the Top 10 now.

Yeah I look at what's left and see it is incredibly obvious too. But some of the shows people have been guessing as top 5 or top 10 are way off.

Such as?

Also, do you mean history in general or things that differed from the book?

There goes one of my top 5 predictions. I had it at 9 so slots pretty well here. I’ve probably rewatched this more than any single show. So good.

Yep, that was my "bold" top 5 guess. It is always talked about in high regards, and I thought it had a better chance of being seen by a high % of voters than a couple others I had in mind.

My top 10 prediction
  1. Breaking Bad
  2. Seinfeld
  3. The Sopranos
  4. The Wire
  5. The Simpsons
  6. SNL
  7. Better Call Saul
  8. Game of Thrones
  9. The Office (US)
  10. Cheers
Before this #7 wouldn't have crossed my mind and that is the surprise of the top 10 for me. I would have had this 10 as a guess as my top 10 predictions with Band of Brothers in there instead. It does make sense because I agree on your #1 prediction - that is where I would put my money as well, so people would probably watch that a ton as well. 0 clue why I haven't gotten back to it myself.

Well the book is part of the problem. Ambrose is a great storyteller, but not much of a historian.

The main criticism is that the characters are pretty flat and very black and white.

Winters for example, is portrayed as the flawless hero, but he was flawed like everyone else and would have been a much more interesting character had the flaws been shown.

Nixon was not just a drunk who followed Winters around. His abilities in planning and operations were critical and weren't really shown.

Dike was not incompetent as portrayed. The show did him a disservice by ignoring the fact that he was wounded at Foy. He had previously won Bronze stars for his service.

Depicting Sobel as a villain, ignoring the fact the was also at Normandy.

Blithe was really done dirty. He didnt even die in Europe. He came home and served again in the Korean War.

It doesnt sit well with me that the service records of these war heroes were re-written so trivially for purposes of better storytelling.

My #1

Ever.

Interesting tidbit on Blithe Scoresman. I didnt know that. I guess for me I didn't watch the show like Shelby Foote narrated it. I watched it because I'm fascinated with the time period and Steven fricking Spielberg helped produce it. The clips of real life soldiers talking helped really set the mood for me. The author told a wonderful story here. War is bad. It's ugly. It's brutal. It's also hard to truly capture. Saving Private Ryan did it the best for me, but Band of Brothers did a damn good job.

The interviews with the actual soldiers always choked me up at the end.

Yeah I don’t mean to say it’s terrible. It’s not. I did rank it. If anything, it got a generation of young people to be aware of WW2 history and to approach family who served in it, getting their stories before it’s too late.

I just wish it favored accuracy instead of storytelling in a few areas, especially ones where the soldiers involved had long passed and weren’t around to set the true story straight.

So, the highest rated show on here that I haven't seen is Deadwood. Starting that today.
Band of Brothers for me. Started that last night. Guaranteed to be better than Deadwood.
Band of Brothers was excellent.
I watched Deadwood years ago and loved it. I started to rewatch it this past year and stopped middle of season 2. Just felt it started to drag too much for me. A must watch show for me. Just a must watch once show for me. Imo. I'm halfway through my rewatch of Boardwalk and still loving it.

I started watching Boardwalk based off the recommendations of this thread. I got to episode 3, and it froze. I rebooted my tv and the firestick. Still freezes on episode 3. I waited a few days and tried again. Still freezes. No other shows on MAX, just Boardwalk.

I'm obviously fated to never see this show.

I'll admit I haven't actually watched it in decades. Having said that, it was must watch tv for decades. I'm old enough to remember the older older cast and enjoyed them a lot, but peak Chris Farley days was just downright hilarious and my favorite.

It's been on for 50 years and as a sketch comedy show doesn't rely on the same characters/storylines for its entire history, so yeah, as hit and miss as it can be, it's still an incredibly important TV institution that has reached the consciousness of almost every American at some point or another.

I got started in the Eddie Murphy years when my middle school classmates were impersonating his characters and I wanted to see what that was all about. I think the original cast and the 1986-93 cast (Carvey, Hartman, Hooks, etc) were the best, but your take on that is going to vary based on your age and preferred comedy styles. The original cast/writers did a lot to change the idea of what kind of comedy you could do on TV.

SNL is kind of take the top 10%, ditch the rest situation. Lots of bad sketches and bad years but the highs are about the funniest and most culture penetrating things out on TV. As bad as it has been at times, the names of people it’s introduced us to is craaaaaazy

Billy Murray, Chevy Chase, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, John Belushi, Kate McKinnon, Chris Farley. Could go on and on and on. No SNL and we don’t get things like Wayne’s World, Ghostbusters, Austin Powers, Happy Gilmore, 30 Rock, Beverly Hills Cop, Fletch, Anchorman, Animal House and on and on and on there too.
