I still am completely shocked that anyone would ever save an animal over a human. I don't think its even close, and I can't comprehend it at all.
Honestly.....forget about strangers for a second, there are people that I know who would drown if it came down between them and any one of my three dogs......
You serious? I just don't get it I guess. I would rather own a dog for many years and watch him die the most horrible and painful death possible than be responsible for any innocent human's death.
NOW THAT'S CRUEL...................
I don't think its cruel at all. Its an animal. I certainly don't go out of my way to harm animals, but I really wouldn't care at all even if I was forced to watch one being tortured. Even if it were one that I knew. Its just an animal.
pretty sad/sick dude.
That's like serial killer sick....
So, what I'm gathering from this is that some of you would rather be responsible for any innocent human's death rather than watch your animal or animal being tortured? So, you have Fluffy, a dog that you have owned for a few years and have an emotional attachment. Joe Snuffy, a sick, twisted mofo is standing in front of you holding a 6 month old infant. You do not know the identity of this infant and Joe Snuffy also has a rope around Fluffy's neck.

Joe Snuffy says, "Make your choice, I either torture and kill Fluffy, we'll start by swinging him around by his neck until he is on the verge of passing out, then we'll punt him like a football around the yard for a while before I decide to slowly choke him to death; or I snap the neck of this infant. I will hand one over to you right now, but the other one pays the price of your decision. The choice is yours."

What is your choice now? To save the life of your dog, or save the life of the unknown infant.
That's not what he was saying. He said it wouldn't bother him in the least to sit back and watch an animal being tortured. It wasn't related to saving an infant. But even if it was, normal people would be bothered by watching another living creature being tortured even if it was the result of saving a human's life. So unless he's a sick f###, then I'd say it's just fishing on the other side of this debate (and thus allowing some room for back peddling...).

Drop a stranger, drop baby Nickie, I'm still saving Fido.

You have a heart for humans. Congrats. Give yourselves a pat on the back. You save the stranger and I'll feed Fido some pupperonis when I get him back home.

This is a joke right? More people would save a stranger than their own dog? lolololololololol

I'd save my dog first without even thinking about it. Seriously.

Haven't read any of the thread. But who the f*** saves a dog over a human being? Someoe's father, brother, etc....

Haven't read any of the thread. But who
Well read some of the replies. With all due respect, I've never met you before and I don't know if you're a bad person or not. I know my dog and love him very much. I don't care if you walk on two legs. I'm saving him before I save you.

I've had pets that I've loved very much. But to choose between one of them and some guy whose got maybe kids or siblings who love him and know him and would miss him... :whoosh: Believe me when I say I understand that you're very attached to your dog. But if you were really in THAT situation?

I'd save my dog 10 out of 10 times. People suck and frankly I could give a crap if they have a family or not. Not to mention its a RICHARD move whether they do or don't have a fam, but i'd still save my weiner dog.

Man, something's missing in your life. Whatever it is, you need to go find it.

Not only is it sad that you save the dog, but you're saving a weiner dog? If my dog and a weiner dog were both drowning, i'd take about 30 seconds to make sure the weiner dog drowns by holding it under water BEFORE I try to save my dog, and I really like my dog.

I'm having a hard time understading why? I don't think the life of a random stranger is anymore valuable than the life of my dog, which I in fact consider part of my family. If anything i'd say you're missing something in YOUR life for choosing to save a stranger over the family pet, which you feed every day, play with every nite, etc.

:hot: Weiner dogs are king of the dogs and you need to understand that, that is a fact of life.

The real question to all of you dog lovers out there who would save your dog's life over a human life is, "Would you be willing to give up your OWN life to save your dog?

To detach yourself from a human being to the point where you're attachment to your pet has a higher value than a human life is the very essence of sheer lunacy, and I would argue that saving your pet over a human life should be treated as murder if proven that you intentionally disregarded the human being with a realistic chance to save that person.

No need to resort to an attempt to belittle your peers by calling them "ladies". It's a tired tactic and we all see right through it. I won't try to argue this any more. I'll just let you keep digging your own (or your dog's?) grave.

:)

I'd save a stray 3 legged, 1 eyed dog before I'd save you.

Wow, I'm devastated. So would you give up your OWN life to save your dog?

If my dog was drowning and I tried to save her then I'd be taking that chance.

I'm having a really hard time seeing how our society has materialized to the point where animal life is on par w/ human life. I get the fact that people love their animals. I have a dog and I would be very sad to see her go, but I put such a high value on human life (I'm pro-life and anti-death penalty, BTW) that, although I know how attached I/we can get to animals, I'm not sure I'll ever understand how anyone could ignore a stranger drowning to save thier dog  I guess there's not much point in debating, though.

This is an easy one. I have an English Bulldog named Quincy. English Bulldogs can't swim. Quincy knows that he cannot swim. If Quincy is in water deep enough to drown with a stranger, I know how he got there. Not only am I saving Quincy, but I'm also throwing a concrete floataion device to the stranger before I perform the rescue.

*Forget the dog for a moment. Is an adult human being who has not taken 4 - 8 hours out of their lives for the training required to keep their heads above water (ie. swimming class) really worth saving?

And because it's germane to the conversation, I give you "soul dog".

Late to the party, but I choose dog and not just because he's sitting here staring at me wondering what my answer will be. Besides, my dog would be smart enough to drown the stranger thus taking all choice away for me...dog wins again...

I'd have to save my dog too.

But mostly because of having to deal with my wife if I didn't save our dog. Our big 'ol lab/mastiff mix is her baby --- she's not able to have children, and she treats our dogs like the beloved family member that he is.

My wife is already going to need professional help to cope with the inevitable death of Otis.

I don't have to live with the grieving family of the drowned stranger. I do have to live with and cope with my grieiving wife. I'll choose saving my dog and my wife's psyche over the stranger.

Damned me to hell if you will...but I was on my way there anyway.
