Tiger Woods (3 Viewers)

Why go the fried chicken angle when there is so much material you could use against Tiger? Dumb, dumb, dumb...

"We'd have him over ever night. We'll stock up on call girls and get take-in from the Waffle House."
Exactly. I would have gone with "Frosted Flakes and Turkish Coffee".
Garcia, who would be part of a minority group in the USA, is probably not skilled in the delicate and esoteric nuances of anything which might be considered racist in the USA.

Yeah I was wondering about that too, if maybe he didn't know that would be racist. But he was already an accomplished junior golfer when Fuzzy made his fried chicken crack, he must've heard plenty about it back then just like the rest of us did. Plus why would he go out of his way to mention fried chicken there? Can't say for sure but it sure seems like he knew what he was doing.

dude... of course he knew, I am 100% certain. People who don't follow golf know that comment. His entire life is golf.

For people who didn't know/don't remember... here's the Fuzzy Zoeller video from Tiger's first Masters win.

The parting shot over his shoulder is 'or collard greens, or whatever the the hell they serve.' Forgot that he snuck a 'little boy' in there too.

Yes, he probably does. But you have to realize that people in other countries don't get their nose totally put out of joint about joking references to ethnicity. Just like in the US we don't get our noses out of joint if someone mentions that Mississippians are not very sophisticated.

I don't think he's one of those Euros that lives in the US like Luke Donald and Ian Poulter, so it's possible maybe they don't know that fried chicken cracks are kinda racist over here. I would still find it VERY hard to believe that he didn't pick that up and intentionally make a racist crack, between the Fuzzy incident and the fact that he went out of his way to mention fried chicken. But it's at least worth mentioning.

Fuzzy was just having a laugh too I bet?

So has pretty much everyone conceded Fin's premise is a total flop yet?

Or are the Tiger Trolls just back in hiding waiting for him to actually lose a tourney or two?
I'm not sure you have the ability, because you're a pathetic troll, but be honest for once.......what do you think Tiger would prefer....being the number one ranked golfer, or being able to actually win one of the tournaments that really matter? Do you think Federer would rather be ranked #1 by winning a bunch of 'other' tournaments or win Slam events?
I suspect Tiger wants to win everything. He will.

I agree. Of course he does. But which four do you suppose he'd like to win most?

Winner winner chicken dinner. (no racism intended)

Why exactly is that phrase offensive?
Imagine if Tiger was Irish and Garcia had made a "let's go have a drink" joke. Or If he was Italian and he said it about pizza. Everyone would be laughing.
Do you mean when Fuzzy said it or when Sergio said it? There's actually a difference, because there is an existing opinion on Fuzzy's comments. The majority opinion is that it was racist.

It's hilarious how every time there's any controversy about whether something was racist, the "PC Police Police" have to come rushing in with their silly hypotheticals about imagined double standards.

Personally, I think stereotypes like blacks eating chicken and irish drinking a lot or whites not being able to dance are harmless and not at all offensive. They're jokes. People take themselves too seriously.

However, make no mistake about it, Sergio meant for that to be a racist statement. He has so much disdain for Tiger.

Agreed. They are jokes when used in friendly mixed company, privately, or a stand-up comedian or such.

In the context Sergio used it, not so much.

They are not imagined. Having said that, I have no doubt that Garcia meant it in a racist way, hence the backlash, but I was just saying, had it been about a white person, no big deal would have been made. Do you really disagree?

As an Irishman, my response would have been..."Are you buying?"
Exactly. I am Irish, too, and I do not look to be outraged or insulted at the drop of a hat, unlike some people.

Of course I agree. So what? Every race and racial stereotype is different. Making fun of black people eating fried chicken is totally different than making fun a Irish people for drinking or Italians for eating pizza. Since they're all completely different, what exactly is accomplished by rushing in any time there's a controversy about a possibly racist statement to with meaningless false comparisons just to say "hey, white people get made fun of too!"? Who are you, Rush Limbaugh?

I can't believe Sergio could be this dumb, especially knowing what happened to Fuzzy's life after he said something similar. Probably had a glass of wine and thought he was being funny.

Nobody is actually offended. The fried chicken quips harken back to (I think) times of slavery when slaves couldn't eat the owners decent livestock, all they could eat was chicken because it was cheap. I'm sure there was a time when a joke like that actually offended people. Imagine 150 years from now if someone non-american said they should stick you on the top floor of a skyscraper and fly planes into the building. You'd be like, c'mon bro.

All racial and ethnic stereotypes are different. We can agree on that, right? And I think we both agree that (1) when it comes to negative black stereotypes, fried chicken is a negative one but also a pretty mild one; and (2) Sergio probably was thinking on racial lines when he said what he did. Agreed?

How is that completely different? How is it different at all? If he had said something about blacks not working or blacks not taking care of their children, it would have been an attack on an entire race's character and THAT would have been different. But liking chicken is different than Italians liking pizza or Irishmen liking beer? How?

Seriously?

From Wikipedia:

When it was introduced to the American South, fried chicken became a common staple. Later, as the slave trade led to Africans being brought to work on southern plantations, the slaves who became cooks incorporated seasonings and spices that were absent in traditional Scottish cuisine, enriching the flavor.[10] Since most slaves were unable to raise expensive meats, but generally allowed to keep chickens, frying chicken on special occasions continued in the African American communities of the South. It endured the fall of slavery and gradually passed into common use as a general Southern dish. Since fried chicken traveled well in hot weather before refrigeration was commonplace, it gained further favor in the periods of American history when segregation closed off most restaurants to the black population. Fried chicken continues to be among this region's top choices for "Sunday dinner" among both blacks and whites. Holidays such as Independence Day and other gatherings often feature this dish.[11]

Since the American Civil War, traditional slave foods like fried chicken, watermelon, and chitterlings have suffered a strong association with African American stereotypes and blackface minstrelsy.[10] This was commercialized for the first half of the 20th century by restaurants like Sambo's and Coon Chicken Inn, which selected exaggerated depictions of blacks as mascots, implying quality by their association with the stereotype. Although also being acknowledged positively as "soul food" today, the affinity that African American culture has for fried chicken has been considered a delicate, often pejorative issue. While the perception of fried chicken as an ethnic dish has been fading for several decades, with the ubiquity of fried chicken dishes in the US, it persists as a racial stereotype.[12][13][14][15]
Again, don't mistake this for me thinking it's really offensive. It's about as mild as negative stereotypes can get. But like I said, every ethnicity and stereotype has a different history. It's stupid to compare them.

And after Fuzzy's crap...how any golfer would try to play the "I didn't know it was offensive" card is pretty ridiculous.

Well, I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh, so if that is an argument he would make, I'll take your word for it, but I do know that asking someone if they are him is pretty insulting, so thanks for that.

And I already said I thought number 2 in your scenario there was true, and as for number 1, yes, that is also true, but I think overreacting to a fried chicken comment is just that: overreacting. I get the history and all, but are people never allowed to joke about blacks liking a certain food? Would you be on board if an Italian got upset over someone joking that they liked pizza?

I agree, but I don't think anyone is overreacting to the comment, are they? I think all people care about is that he made any kind of racial joke about Woods at all, and that he made the same racial joke another golfer made 15 years ago, and the fact that we already know they hate each other. Nobody's acting like he showed up on the first tee in a white robe and pointy hat.

Making fun of Irish for drinking is different from this how?
