Tiger Woods (1 Viewer)

6 months. He’s been playing golf for 6 months from a potentially devastating back injury/surgery. And he’s a top-5 player right now. 

 
266 is the lowest he's ever shot in a major in his career.  64 is the best final day he's ever had in a major.

All this despite the fact that HE CANNOT HIT A DRIVER!  

Ask any single golfer on tour if they would switch iron games and short games with Tiger right now and 100% of them would say yes.  He's so much better than everyone else with an iron or around the greens right now, and that's just stupid given that he's had only 8 months being able to even swing a club since his last surgery.  

Give him this offseason to work on his driver.  If he can find it, and that's not a given, then he'll dominate the tour again, just like he did in the early 2000s.  If he finds his driver this off season, I could easily see him winning 5 tourneys next year, including a major or two.

  • 3 over on his first two holes of the tournament. 
  • Played the next 70 holes better than anyone at -17. 
  • Low round for the final day at 64 despite playing army golf off the tee. 
  • Shot his lowest major total ever.
  • Most importantly, entertained the #### out of me while I smoked ribs on a Sunday afternoon.
Back, in the hunt, in contention, blah blah blah.  Golf was fun for me today.  That opening 9 today was pure entertainment gold.  To shoot 64 with what he was vomiting off the tee is absolute gold.  And in all honestly, about 1/2 inch away from at least three more puts dropping.  Thank you Tiger for an enjoyable afternoon.

Saw something on Twitter where Tiger shot 66/66/64 over his past 3 rounds for a total of 196. That’s 4 shots better than any 54-hole stretch he’d previously had in majors in his career.

 
I was too young to enjoy Tiger's initial run, so it's cool to see a glimpse of what once was.

You've got to think that as Tiger gets his swag back and the crowd roars get louder, he will get even better

Actually you have to figure Father Time will attack more than the hairline.  It will be titles one week and Manning part deus the next.

He played amazingly well, that said, it's not often a muni hosts a major.  9 players were double digit under par on a par 70 course.  That's close to a record if it's not.  This was basically the Waste Management Open with bigger, flatter, and softer greens.  Tiger in his prime would have finished 24 under.

 
Simply amazing he’s this good again. Medicine is always improving so nothing really like this before in golf. He’s also the best ever so there’s that. Definitely fun having this story line added to the Majors. 

 
Poor, Tiger. He had a chance today.

Probably would have played much better if not for the number of fanbois swinging from his nut sack.

Hard to swing a club, I'd imagine.

 
I just think if Tiger would slow down a bit with his driver he'd be fine.  He just tries to kill it and the misses are both ways (mostly right).  His short game is again ridiculous.  He's been wild off the tee with driver for a long time and still won.  His irons, short game and putting were as good as ever today.  Golf is so much better with him playing like this.  

 
Can we get a list of the names that were using words like "never" and "washed up".

It's time for some accountability in this thread.

This is what amazes me. The fundamental golfer says to hit 3 wood then let the rest of the game work. Why can’t he do this?

He can't hit 3 wood consistently either, which is why he's hitting that driving iron so much.  Of course, he couldn't hit the fairway with that today either, so who knows.

Yeah but what they meant was that he's not going to win every single tournament every year like he used to.  That's what they meant to say.  So, you're being unfair.

 
There’s big differences between him contending (“in the hunt”), him winning another tournament, him winning another major and him having a chance to catch Jack.  I see the first one as done - he’s back contending.  Sinn can troll all he wants but the guy was in contention at two majors this year.    I don’t think there’s anyway to know whether he’ll win another tournament or major.  Winning tournaments isn’t easy and that’s why what he did 10-15 years ago was remarkable.  Guys hit it farther now and the fields are unbelievably deep as it is such a global game - partly because Woods helped the game grow so much.

The fear is always that his injuries won’t allow him to compete regularly.  I think he probably wins a tournament next year.  I’m not convinced he necessarily wins a major - it’s SO difficult. And he’s probably too old to think about Jack’s record.

Here’s the best part for me and lot of folks who are casual golf watchers - his tournaments and especially the majors are must see TV again.  What he did yesterday was unreal for a guy his age and after coming back from all the surgeries and layoffs.  He was throwing darts at the flags most of the day.

Really unreal regardless of age.  If you exclude the first shot of every non par 3 and last shot of every single hole he played yesterday, it was probably the best display of shot making in a round  meeting those criteria  ever.

There were 2 other 64s yesterday.

A bunch of 66s

Koepka shot a 63 on Friday.

So yes Tiger played well. Others also lit the course up as much as Tiger did but those guys don't get air time

In almost every major there's at least one guy who goes out early on Sunday and posts a number.  Shooting 64 with no pressure and shooting 64 when you're IN THE HUNT are two totally different things.

Dont embarrass yourself and pretend Aunt Mae's Invitational in Paducah counts as a win.  If that is the case, I should be on that list also.

Anybody that watched Saturday/Sunday and is still gripping onto the hate is either trolling or should consider some self examination of their own emotional processes.

It wasn't like he ever had his Driver going past age 30 really anyways.  I fail to see how this is some requirement.  

You will need to hit driver at Augusta and Bethpage enough to put him out of the running, though.  

Pebble you don't even really have to hit driver till hole 14 so he would be fine there.  I mean it's what? 14 and 18 to hit Driver? Rest of the time it's optional unless they've found some way to back up some hole I didn't realize.

Won't have any trouble in ireland either bagging the driver.  

 
Honestly don’t know how anyone in their right mind, non shticking, could say he’s “done” right now.

The numbers don’t lie.  His 64 in the final round is his best ever in the final round of a major.  And this stat also blew my mind:

His 196 (66-66-64) over the last three rounds of the PGA was his lowest score across 54 holes of a major ever in his career— by four shots.

Crazy.

Nobody is saying Tiger Woods was never great.  But he is not great anymore.

When Finless started this thread, Tiger was only interested in two things:  Denny's waitresses, and winning majors.  Now, he may still be chasing Denny's waitresses, but he has not won a major since the thread started.

Yes - he will never be great again.

Too old.  Too many injuries.  Too much of a grind.  Too many players that are better, younger, healthier than he is right now.

He won't win multiple tournaments in any given year, and he won't win a single major in the rest of his career.  I don't think he will win any full PGA tournaments ever again, but as you can see from that list - you don't have to be great to win "a" tournament - so I won't go so far as to say he'll never win again - but the odds are very much against him.

 
Great tournament.  As great a story Tiger was this week, this was about Brooks Koepka.  Man was throwing darts and played lights out.  When the day started I thought that if Tiger would shoot 64, he'd win.  He couldn't have played much better outside of hitting some more fairways.  Koepka was just in the zone. 

I wonder if he would have played as well if he was paired with Tiger on Sunday.  Woodland sure didn't and even Justin Thomas commented on how this was the first time he has experienced the Tiger effect (his words) in terms of crowd noise. And he was ahead of them.  

Anyone who doesn't think that PGA golf is better with Tiger in the mix is simply fooling themselves or just isn't paying attention.

Seems odd to plant this flag after yesterday's performance.

 
8 Months to revert to drugs and hookers before the Masters.  We'll see.  Does he want golf more than he wants his demons.  Frankly he has come back further than I ever thought.  That said, every year new talent comes into the field making it just that much harder for him to accomplish something.

Every major he plays - he will be up against better golfers.  And with each passing year, the gap will continue to grow.

And, for the record - I am not a "Tiger-hater"  I like him, and I have said repeatedly, I think he was the best golfer to ever play - his peak >>> Jack's peak.  I just have the awareness to realize that his injuries and lifestyle have taken its toll.  He is not going back to 2013.  

He will continue to focus on the majors, and he will provide excitement to people who want to see the old Tiger dominating fields - but he will come up short.  Because he is not the old Tiger.

Ok. I don't think he will be the dominant force that he was. That would be extremely hard. But to say he will never win a major after yesterday... :shrug:

Pretty amazing stat.  Just goes to show (1) he is still capable of great golf and (2) the talent on the course with him is better than ever (as a collective).  Also amazing is the fact that he shot 64 on Sunday and only hit a few fairways.  He one-putted, what, 9 of the first 11 holes?  That's just sick.  Great short game this week.

I hope that the bolded is obvious to everyone.  

There are a handful of better golfers playing against Tiger every tournament so winning will be tough for him.  But, he is playing really good golf at the moment and stands a chance.  l love watching Sunday golf and it is must watch TV for me when Tiger is in contention.   He brings electricity to the course.
