Today's Scottish vote to leave the UK (1 Viewer)

If Scotland goes through with this they will need somebody to lead them. It has to be a well known Scotsman, somebody everybody likes, who has vision and moderation.

I nominate Gordon Ramsay.

It would probably have a significant effect on the politics of British Parliament. Scottish representatives are overrepresented in the more left leaning parties.
Yes in the short term but the longer-term question is whether Scottish independence would re-energize the left, particularly in Northern England.
In what way (can you hypothesize?)
I don't pretend to understand UK politics so take this with a dram of Scotch. The Yes campaign has been helped by disaffection about the current state. It's become as much a vote against London as it is a vote for Edinburgh. Labour has been drifting to the right since Tony Blair and the Liberal-Democrats are currently in a coalition with the Tories. There is no viable party to the left of them. That's been a bigger issue in Scotland than in England but there's a North-South divide as well. The industrial North have been losers in the current economy.

The vote for Scottish independence would be a watershed event in UK politics. There would have to be repercussions south of the border. Maybe it'll continue England's long term swing to the right but I think you have to look beyond a bunch of Scottish MPs getting up from their seats.

Oof, tim.

What "country" would be next? Catalonia? Quebec? or one of the mentioned other UKs?
The EU is already saying that leaving the UK will cost the Scots the EU membership, with no fast track route to get in, in part to dissuade the Catalan from splitting from Spain.

Would we let Scotland into NATO? It would be hilarious if the Scots voted for independence and were immediately invaded by Russia.

The problem is that it's not as easy as winning a vote in a lot of these places.

If Catalonia could vote on independence like Scotland is doing, it would be gone already. But Spain won't allow a vote and says secession would be illegal.

Danny Boyle for Emperor!

FWIW, the Independent and the London Evening Standard published a poll yesterday that split it 53% "stay in UK" vs. 47% "independent Scotland" (margin of error 3%).

We'll see what happens. It's early afternoon in the UK now ... I'd guesstimate about 6-8 hours of voting left.
The results will take a while to pour in, I saw an estimate that said they won't know until early tomorrow AM, so after midnight US east coast time.

I would be stunned if they vote to split. Like we saw with whole the Nate Silver controversy in 2012, the media loves to sell every big election as a tossup because it's self-serving but the polling usually tells a different story. My wife is big-time into this- she worked for the SNP for a while in Edinburgh, we've had a Scottish flag flying outside our house for a while- and she's been basically resigned to a "no" vote for a couple weeks.

Polls close at 5PM Eastern US. They will be counting the votes after that. We may know something by 10 or 11 tonight. They are not reporting preliminary numbers at all.

No surprise ... if the vote truly is close, they'll want to be extra careful with the tallying. I wonder if exit polling is done over there.

Anyhow ... just looked it up: the polls close in Scotland at 9:00 p.m. GMT (4:00 p.m. Eastern).

Yes, but you can't find out anything about those polls until voting is complete.

Do they have Daylight Savings time in the UK? I based 4 p.m. Eastern on a world clock that shows London at "GMT +1". The Scottish polls close at 9:00 p.m. GMT (note no "+1") ... so I might be an hour off.

CNN is reporting that they officially close at 10PM.

Surprised that no one has linked John Oliver yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YkLPxQp_y0

Scottish currency will have to be "sheep and threats" had me lolling.
Yeah, that was pretty fantastic.
Every time someone links one of these Oliver clips, I wonder why in the hell I don't watch that show. They're always great.
It might be the best satire show on TV, and yes I include Colbert and Stewart there as well. I think it's mainly because he doesn't waste time interviewing guests. It's just him ripping for 30 minutes on the stories of the day and being able to curse at the same time so when a situation you just know calls for an, Are You ****ing Kidding Me!, he gets to say it and with his comedic timing it's always well done.

So picture Stewart being able to curse, without the waste of 10 minutes of a guest just ripping on the topics of the day. It's just goodness. And I'm serious - I am really considering paying for HBO just for his show
