Top 101 Movies of the 80s (3 Viewers)

And often it seems like the directors who make the most messed up stuff are very soft spoken, normal people when I listen to them. I think there is something to be said for being able to get out some demons through art. Horror directors, Lynch, Ari Aster, etc..
Yes, much like some very violent athletes (fighters, football players) are very nice off the field of play. It helps to separate things.

Ran (Chaos) is one people might not be familiar with but it's a great entry point into Japanese director Kurosawa. It's just a mass scale war epic. Plus with roots in Shakespeare's King Lear the story is accessible to our Western minds. Pretty simple set-up, an elderly warlord tries to prepare for his end days by splitting his kingdom among his sons. They then go on to betray one another and their father in their thirst for power.

I gotta say, Frank Booth was the one who got me to try Pabst Blue Ribbon. 🍺
Amyl Nitrate as well?
Speaking of anyone ever seen Jubilee?

Seems like something 80’s would like
Have not even heard of it. Sounds pretty damn interesting.

Looks like it's on HBO max

I had the criterion DVD at one point. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it’s definitely interesting though. Could see you guys liking it

I was expecting more like a female Clockwork, it’s certainly not like that

Seems like it could be up @rockaction 's alley? Have you seen Jubiliee?

Watching Predator now and I am dying of laughter. In the first big shootout when they raid the enemy HQ to free the hostages, Arnold kicks open a door where the apparent enemy leader is just standing around reading paperwork. He didn't hear the hundreds of rounds of machine gun fire and several explosions happening all around? The sound didn't travel through the 3 inches between the bamboo slats of his room? Didn't think to maybe arm himself with a weapon?

That whole scene is cheesy 80s action gold. They always have time for the one-liners too.

I ain't got time to bleed.
Oh, ok.
You got time to duck?

Nope. But I clicked the link and thought about it a bit, though. Good pull, Dan Lambskin. That looks interesting.

@otb_lifer has gotta have seen that somehow or know about it. I think he did a rundown of top punk movies in the Punk Hundred thread. It might even be there. Let me look.

eta* He didn't in the first few pages of that thread, which would have lent itself to it. But I know he did a punk movie countdown once in one of these here threads.

- Jubilee - this is a pure trip, no other way to describe it ... messy and ridiculous and mind numbingly off-kilter. most notable for bring a vehicle for Jordan, who really was THE first punk rock female persona ... she was the human doll for all of Malcolm and Vivienne's fashion experiments, and she was as intregal a part of the early London scene as any of the musicians - she just recently passed (2 weeks or so ago) at age 65. pretty major player, she was, but that flick is a real task to sit through.

Indeed he has seen it. "[T]hat flick is a real task to sit through."

LOL

#11: FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH [prime]

80s' #14 and my #21. There's a couple comedies after thinking about them today I would probably have a little higher if I did the list today - this and our #8 (which I am going to watch tonight). This is the very rare example of seeing it a bit later in life and loving it more and more. So funny with so many quotes, but it also takes the time to address or observe other things in a realistic way.

Also didn’t see this until I was older, probably similar time to me first seeing animal house. Didn’t love it at first but this one grew on me over time and repeat viewings

"You D!CK!" -- JAA, probably

Fast Times would be top 5 for me from the 80s. Just an all-around classic in every way. It manages to be a great combination of comedy and drama, has a ton of quotable lines, and captures the feel of high school in the 80s pretty damn well. Love it.
One of my all time favorites as well. The collection of acting talent that was just bubbling under the surface at the time is incredible.

13. BLUE VELVET [hbo max]

My #4 movie, and 80s' #44. This movie is a lot. So weird, uncomfortable, beautiful, and scary. As I read more about Lynch and read his views on movies and life, I started to appreciate what he brings more. For example, the scene of a battered Rossellini was based on something that he saw as a kid and his reaction haunted him. Hopper is freakin' bananas in this movie.

Thank you

IIRC it was the opening scene... with the camera tracking across typical suburban front yard with kids playing, green grass, sprinklers, flowers, white picket fence and then zooms down into the grass to find the ear. I knew right then to buckle up when I saw this in the theater. I always remember the scene with candy colored clown (roy orbison tune?) and the dancing... just a great film... even though I've never been a fan of Kyle Mclaughlin.

The opening scene didn't depict the ear in the grass, it depicted bugs (I think beetles or ants) acting what seemed to be violent or at least producing uncomfortable sounds.

So heavy on the nostalgia...I live in SoCal in a beach community and the movie is revered here.

It would be in my top 10 but I could see others not rating it as high.

Please excuse my ignorance, as I don't venture into these threads too often. However, '80's film rankings are irresistible to me.

What criteria are being used for the rankings? IMDB rankings? Rotten Tomatoes? Personal taste? I understand it can't be straight critic reviews/Oscar nominations/etc.(Otherwise one of my favorite movies of all time 'Better off Dead' wouldn't have made the list(barely)).

I will withhold my pitchfork for the time being, as the list isn't finished yet. I will say, though, that I am getting ready to sharpen it....
Just KP and I chat movies a lot both on here and in text messages. We wanted to have a thread to generate some focused movie talk. So we both made a list of the 100 films we consider the best movies of the 80s. This is a combined ranking. So it’s just purely our subjective preferences. Oscars, box office, RT, IMDb didn’t factor at all.
And this is what makes the thread fun......because there are some off the wall picks here!!!! LOL!!!
are you saying Fanny & Alexander is off the wall?

just curious. it's widely considered a top "film" of the 80s. but yeah... defintely not an "80s" film
I think some people aren’t taking the list for what it is - most are just looking for a more generic “80s Nostalgia” movie list. Both approaches are fine but some are conflating the two.
Yeah, it's gotten a bit ridiculous with the "only movies that celebrate my youth" stuff.

I have a soft spot for stuff like The Last Starfighter as well, but come on.

We both chose a balanced approach, but to be fair if I went all "80s movies", people would still have issues because I don't click with the early comedies and Raiders still wouldn't have been on my list, so
Would be borderline 101.

What was the first "arcade game" movie? I mean, imagine a video game being a test for becoming an intergalactic starfighter? Excellent plot. I also think they did a good job with the side girl plot.
I don't know. When was that dumb one that was basically a Nintendo Powerglove commercial?
NO. You do NOT talk bad about The Wizard. Shame on you.

Obviously Fast Times is funny and has all the sex and music that one wants from a teen comedy but what makes it special is how well every single cast member is treated. You can walk away saying something positive and negative about each character, even the lesser ones. The movie is never cruel or demeaning to them, it doesn’t make jokes at their expense.

well said.

ya know, as much as it were an ensemble piece, and the three main cultural touchstones are Phoebe/Spicoli/Damone, it's still JJL's flick, imo ... she's the heart of the story, and ya can't walk away from it not falling in love with her.

... especially back in '82 🖤

Except Arnold. Nothing positive there.

I would say JLL and Judge are the closest to lead characters the movie has. I totally agree with you.

Alright Hamiltons!

Never seen Fast Times. Probably never will.
Why not?
I didn't have cable growing up and it just kind of passed me by.

Now it is just a comedy that stars Sean Penn - one I'm not very interested in and one im completely uninterested in.
It’s an ensemble cast really. Penn is probably on screen for 20% of the movie.
That 20% might even be a high estimate, not that I've clocked it or anything. It just feels like we are with the Hamiltons and Damone way more to me. It would be an interesting stat to see.

I still haven't decided if I am doing just 5 or all 10 today. We will see how the day goes and how much snow  I have to take care of .

As I said, the next 5 is a continuation of yesterday. We have 3 artsy/drama thingies, one comedy, and one other that might be one of the bigger surprises of the top 20. Of the 5 we have three top 10s from @Ilov80s, and two more from me. As I scan the top 10, each pick is a top 10 from one of us, and the lowest rating from the other #26. We had three movies that were on each of our top 10 lists - and 0 surprise, those are the top 3 of the countdown.

I think the posters would liked yesterday's selection will be quite happy going forward, others might like about 5 of the next 10.

1. you haven't seen any others, or just never want to again?
2. That was 100% sarcasm. Do not watch that movie for how JJL looks, that's for sure.
3. I did find her attractive still in the show Atypical, which I have recommended a bit.

First we will get to what I thought might be one of the bigger surprises of the top 20 or so. I don't that either of us are a huge fan of the director and it's probably more of surprise considering the other of his that will be left off our top 100 that I would assume others were expecting. Part political thriller and part behind the scenes of movie making, so I guess it makes sense that two movie nerds would dig our #10...

Anyone else read the Fast Times book? It’s a great easy read though very tough to find. Knowing that these are all real people, it’s interesting to get to know them a little more. Definitely recommend if you can find it. A friend of mine got me a tattered version for my birthday recently. Probably cost him $200, makes no sense that it’s so rare but it is.

Props to Crowe for novel but also Heckerling for defying the studio at every turn. They wanted a Porkys. She gave them a very human drama/comedy dealing with adult topics in often quite adult ways. No easy jokes based on race, sex, class. It wasn’t a movie written by adults mocking the young or a movie where young people mock adults. It’s just a movie about people who happen to be in high school.

Also a funny note, the guy Rattner is based on went on to be the author of the “Dummy’s Guide to…” books.

#10: BLOW OUT [hbo max]

My #9, and 80s' #25. As I look at my list, I would say this is easily the fastest climber for me. I saw it for the first time within the last decade and have been a bit obsessed since. Like I hinted at, it manages to hit me in that movie nerd soft spot, and just love plot element of Travolta being a sound man for cheesy B-movies and how that ties in to the evidence and plot. Great supporting cast too, as I've always been a fan of Nancy Allen and Lithgow.

Of all the ones that the peanut gallery might not have seen and have the best shot at liking of our top movies, I would say it's Blow Out and Thief.
