Isn’t that almost exactly what most people are saying though? Only a small handful of people ever try to claim it is illegal now (which is obviously not true) and few people claim this isn’t only targeting the Eagles (also not true - they do it the most by far).

I've read that the league pushed Detroit to petition for changes to the playoff seeding and home field rights, and now there's speculation that Goodell encouraged the Packers lame duck president to make this proposal. Murphy is retiring next month. For me it's odd how the first proposal (which was terribly worded) was shot down so they just tweak it a bit and re-submit it. If true, we can expect it will probably become a reality. Hopefully they got someone smarter to draft this version.

The NFL did change the rules about field goals many years back in 1974. The posts were moved back 10 yards from the front of the end zone to the back of the end zone. This was adopted in response to the increased number of fgs due in part to the influx of foreign soccer players who were better at kicking.
Moving the posts back did decrease fgs and opened up the end zone for more passing. Also player safety improved since the goal post being situated at the goal line led to collisions.

I expect the NFL to consider raising the crossbar on the goal posts in the coming years. 50 yard + field goals have exploded in number over the past five years.

The league wants TDs. FGs are generally boring except for game winners with an expiring clock.
The NFL tried to install some life into the extra point by moving the try back from the 2 to the 15 yard line. Overall I see this as a transitional phase and the NFL eventually doing away with the extra point kick and replacing it with a variation of what is now a 2 point conversion.

Thanks; and all I wanted was just a reply like that to be honest. Didn't even expect a reply, but I also didn't want to devolve into some kind of "I know what you are, but what am I!" Pee-wee Herman level exchange either.

I know you and other divisional fans can catch a lot of flak in the Eagles thread or Eagles related topics, and sometimes I'd imagine it's unwarrented. But I wanted to let you know I wasn't trying to come at you, just that I disagree with the notion that a legal play provokes an illegal response. It wasn't that first time it's been brought up in the thread, and it wasn't just brought up by you. It wasn't just Luvu in the playoffs this past year. Vita Vea tried to rip off Hurts' head the year before. It would be pretty unfair to ban the play because it leads to unsportsmanlike conduct for the defense, but the league may feel that they have to do something.

It sounds like they are going to at this point. I just hope they don't present the change with that kind of reasoning, or the increased risk of injury thing.

TBH I still don't really get why they started allowing it again in the first place. It seems like maybe it was because "it's difficult to officiate", but... that's the official's job. A fair amount of rules are still more or less discretionary. We will pretend there's a hard definition of what is a catch vs not a catch, or PI vs not. But really, especially when making at call at game speed, it's just a judgement call the majority of the time.

I don't love getting rid of it, but if there was a silver lining it will at least feel as though things are more equal between offense and defense. It always seemed to be a disconnect that it was ok on offense to push/pull teammates, but not on defense. And really, the past decade or so a lot of the rules and tweaks have made offensive lives easier, and defensive lives harder. So I guess finally a win for defenses.

Really a bad argument, not just in this situation, but in general. A legal act does not bear the responsibility of eliciting an illegal response. It's basically the some logical process as "I had to beat my wife because she burned my dinner". Not an Eagles fan and IDC if it's banned or not either, but at least make an intellectually congruent argument if you're going to make one at all.
