US Men's National Team (25 Viewers)

There is almost no chance FIFA does anything but if they did, I think UAE would get in since they went the furthest of any Asian team that did not qualify.

I have no idea why I did not realize this before but there are 6 Asian teams in the 32 team field, the most ever.

USMNT status report:
McKennie: Reportedly out until at least Nov. 14.
De la Torre: Club says out til ~Nov. 20
Turner: Missed last two games w/ tight groin
Sargent: Held out this weekend w/ calf issue
Richards: Hasn't played since Aug. 27, won't be in full training until Nov. 4-7

Wales are considering changing their name to Cymru on the international stage and are planning discussions on the topic with players and staff following this year’s World Cup. They have already had informal discussions with UEFA about the possible name change.

On the #USMNT injury front: - Josh Sargent's calf injury kept him out for Norwich's 3-1 win over Stoke last weekend. - He is ruled out for tomorrow's game vs. QPR - The club is hopeful he returns this weekend vs. Rotherham

so lets play this out.

Most have been assuming GGG will roster Jesus, Pepi and Sargent.

Lets assume Sargent is not available. Who is next up?

GGG has shown ZERO love for Pefok and Pefok is mired in a bad slump.

GGG also fairly heavily criticized Haji the only time Haji was called.

I am unaware if GGG has ever even mentioned Vasquez, much less expect him to call Vasquez up for the WC with no previous time with the team.

I assume GGG would swallow what ever bad taste he has about Pefok and call him but could he also just say **** it, and only call two strikers and then make do with Pulisic/Weah/Reyna/Morris all of whom can pretend to be functional 9's (Weah/Morris) or at least be good false 9's (Pulisic and Reyna)?

Not so fast!

The United States will start preparations for the 2026 World Cup with friendlies against Serbia and Colombia in the Los Angeles area in January.

The U.S. will play Serbia on Jan. 25 at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles and meet Colombia three days later in Carson, California, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Wednesday.

Mehdi Teremi (Iran) is on fire this season for Porto. 5 goals, 4 assists in 11 league games; 5 goals, 2 assists in 5 CL games; 2 goals and an assist in the Portugal Supercup game.

Ben Chilwell went down grabbing his hamstring in extra time today and it looked pretty bad. England could be missing both Chelsea fullbacks in Qatar - James definitely out, Chilwell not yet known. Both are huge players for the club, not sure how important they were expected to be for England.

This was a stat from the Iran reddit preview you posted, these are Messi level numbers

"At Porto, he's amassed an astonishing 100 goal contributions (58 goals, 42 assists) in 110 matches."

Crazy they can still bring in Kyle Walker and Trent A-A.

Walker is hurt too i think but they'll likely start Tripps at RB and Shaw at LB. Both are playing well for club. I can't see a world where TAA starts given Southgate has never favored him and he's playing like warmed over dogshit for Liverpool.

I saw somewhere that Berhalter's contract officially ends after the WC. So he'll need to either extend for a period or these games will be managed by an interim. Not sure what USSF's plan is here.

that was exactly what I was thinking.

In my dreams, US Soccer is proactive enough to have the next candidate lined up to hire in December so that he can hit the ground running in January but that is the longest of long shots.

I assume we will have a Sarachan like figure at least until next summer. I hope they don't take forever to hire a coach like last cycle.

I don't think firing the reigning World Cup Championship coach is going to sit well, but you mileage may vary.

Could be an interesting time after the WC. If the USMNT makes a decent run, then we may quickly extend GGG. Marsch could also be available in the next few weeks, meaning he could also be hired immediately after the WC.

I'm not sure which I would prefer. We love to pick nits with GGG, but if he makes a deep run (and how do we define that? win the group? Final 8?) it will be hard to ignore the results.

I also am very intrigued by Marsch as the USMNT coach for the 2026 cycle, given I enjoy the style of his teams and he has familiarity with two of our key players.

While I'm excited for the tournament, I just find it really hard to believe that we're going to make any sort of "deep run". I could certainly see us finishing 2nd in the group (or maybe even winning it) but we just have a lot going against us right now. Really young, lots of guys nicked up/out of form. Our core group has had very little time together due to injuries and I dont trust Greg to make adjustments tactically.

Would love for the Marsch era to start sooner rather than later.

I think 2 cycle coaches in general are a mistake. I would rather the decision be made based on his entire tenure rather than just the one short form tournament but I also recognize the WC results will likely over ride anything else he did during the cycle.

I think your marks of winning the group and making the quarter finals will be the over under mark in terms of if he gets rehired. I will add the quarter final itself has to be competitive even in a loss.

This is what I want the new coach and McBride/US Soccer to focus on immediately in the new cycle, if not sooner.

1) Create another Super Copa 16 team tournament. Have the games mostly in US but also sprinkle games in Mexico and Canada and use this as a soft opening for the WC itself. I would use only WC stadiums where possible. This tournament made a ton of money last time and would serve as a massive promotional tool and double as excellent competition for the US.

2) Get the US into a Euro qualifying WC group. While we won't get all starters to play against, we will still get very hungry international players looking to impress their coaches. And all games will be played away, which makes travel for the majority of the US team very easy and adds an extra level of difficulty to all the games.

3) Try to get invited to the Asian championship. Concacaf has in the past invited Asian teams to play in the Gold Cup so this could be sold fairly easily. This would be another strong tournament to help prepare the team.

I offer these because IMO, Nations League, Gold Cup and random friendlies won't be enough to prepare the team.

Hell no it's not. The level of competition is only part of it, but also the atmosphere, and ever more important is the style of play.
Agreed. That is one of the reasons I tried to be diverse in my suggestions. South America, Europe and Asia will all have various differences in style of play even if it is not as pronounced as years gone by.

Concacaf has no relationship with Africa so I left them out. Probably just as well because god knows what could happen if you mix Concacaf and Africa :)

The 26 man roster has to be released to the public no later than Nov 14. Given all the current injuries to Weston, Turner, Dest, Richards etc, I assume GGG will have to wait until next weekend games are complete.

I hope Turner can go, but if he can’t I’d pick Horvath over Steffen. Can’t afford a Rob Green situation in a short tourney

Bogart also reported that the Aaronson deal does not include any loan back. If he passes his medical, he is expected to join the main club in January.

Sources confirm Tom's reporting, not that it needs it. Aaronson might soon be joined in Germany by another US U-20 international. Source says Borussia Monchengladbach is interested in San Jose winger Cade Cowell. No bid yet. Quakes want big money, which could make a deal tough.
Transfermkt still shows his value at 5m (flat year over year) but if someone offers that, I think SJ should jump on it. At 17 I was really excited for him but now I doubt he has a USMNT future. He's been surpassed by so many guys. Only real thing he has going for him is his position group looks rather thin but he likely isn't even a starter for the U20s at this point.
