US Men's National Team (2 Viewers)

I just noticed something interesting:

Fotmob lists players who are out and why. They list Tillman as out with a return in mid February.

Dest was listed as "doubtful". That must indicate he is close to returning now.

!@#$% - sounds like he'll be out for a while.

I guess Sargent is our starter in March, and our backup is...Agmeyang? Vazquez? Zardes?

With Sargent's injury history, this is absolutely terrifying.

Well, I guess we may get to see if the feel good Agyemang story will continue......

Didn't somebody say Dike was getting close?

I haven't heard much about Prefok. Haji is hurt, iirc, but maybe coming back soon hopefully?

I mean, none of those guys are at or will ever be at current Pepi status. Sucks.

The Pepi injury could not have been worse timing. It could really screw up what should have been a career changing (financially speaking) move.

Looks like Pefok has no goals in 889 minutes this season.

Yes Dike is getting close but the likelihood of him being both good enough and healthy enough for March has to be extremely low.

Poch is going to have to pick through Championship/MLS level strikers unless he changes things up and goes with out a 9 (either a false 9, or dual strikers in Pulisic and Weah).

Maybe Gio can do some of that too. Tbh, I wouldn't mind seeing him further up field with less need for shuttling up and down the sidelines. Not sure how he plays NOT facing and running at goal, but we're starting to hit zero up front.

agreed. there are options Poch can consider.

Much of the choice may come down to what he thinks about Sargent, who I don't think has ever been in camp yet with Poch due to injuries.

Hopefully Poch is smart enough to realize Sargent doesn't belong on the field unless you are trying to protect a lead.

Limited upside aside, I can't imagine a coach NOT liking everything else Sargent brings. And given the complete lack of options, I'd think Poch will love Sarge.

Oh right, I forgot about hot-take mcgoo.

Real nice. Someone disagrees with you and it's a hot take. Should I PM you posts for approval in the future Chief?

It was meant to be light hearted- sorry you took offense.

It's ok to not like Sargent..I already said he had limited upside. But saying he shouldn't be on the field when there's literally nobody else... What is that other than a hot take?

I guess one long shot at striker could be Damian Downs. He is 20 and plays in Bundesliga 2 for Koln.

He is a dual nat who has played a couple of times for the US U23 team but did not make the Olympic squad.

Gotta be better than Sargent!
Zardes was better than Sarge. Sarge average one goal every 3.25 games. Zardes averaged 3.3 but at least would occasionally get an assist.

He's had numerous opportunities and can't cut it. He's never in the right spot in the box and IMO he bogs down our better players. Time to try some other options or give the Pirate of the Caribbean another run. Personally I'd look to Pulisic, Weah, Dest, or Reyna and see how they work out. By plugging one of them up top we can put another quality player in the lineup.

I like the idea of trying Pulisic, Weah or Reyna.

However, if we want an actual striker, I think Sargent has to be our starting point. With all of these guys, there's way more sample size of club play than national team. Given the smallish sample size with national team, and the fact that we have a new coach who's going to do things different tactically, I don't give much weight to past national team performance compared to extended club performance. Our choices (outside of playing a superior player out of position) right now are:
  • Scores a lot in Championship
  • Never scores in Bundesliga
  • Scores some in Bundesliga 2
  • Scores in a lot in MLS
  • Scores a bit in MLS
  • Scores some in Liga MX

Outside of scoring goals for his club, Sarges strength is also all the work he puts in defensively and helping set up team shape both sides of the ball. Discounting that and focusing only in past US scoring record isn't looking at the big picture
