US Men's National Team (7 Viewers)

some one figured out how the US gets into pot 2.  :)

==============

So what would it take for the U.S. to rise four spots to Pot 2? All of these things would have to happen:

• The U.S. has to beat Trinidad and Tobago.

• Argentina or Chile has to miss the World Cup.

• Paraguay needs to make the World Cup.

• Sweden has to lose to the Netherlands on Tuesday, but by fewer than six goals. Sweden would then need to pull an upset in the UEFA playoffs next month.

• Ireland needs to pull an upset in the UEFA playoffs next month.

• Greece needs to beat Gibraltar on Tuesday. Greece would then need to pull an upset in the UEFA playoffs next month.

• New Zealand needs to pull an upset on the fifth-place South American team in the intercontinental playoffs next month.
it's a little unbelievable, but it could happen. polarity etc.

still a chance of rain mid day at stadium, but since yesterday morning, it has been hot and sunny helping the workers get the pitch in some sort of playable condition.   I guess the best we can hope for is soft and slower but not a total quagmire.

I know there is no way to have predicted this game being important but I wonder in hindsite if Fox is bummed they did not win the rights to this game especially when they are airing just UFC filler on FS1 tonight.

My Honduran buddy says it's supposed to be 98deg w 85%humidity in Hon tonight. Fun.
how are you guys handicapping the other games?  On the one hand, I think both Honduras and Panama look a bit shell shocked given they have blown good chances to qualify.  On the other hand I can't see either Mexico or CR trying very hard tonight.

If either Panama or Honduras was playing away, I would have given good odds they would not win but maybe the home crowds will push them both forward

Methink much guaro (scooby...get prepared for '18) was drunk the past two night for CR to do much tonight especially with such a short turn around.  I fully expect Panama to win.

Yeah, cr won't give a crap and will play the way Panama wanted the us to play four years ago.

I think Mex will play for pride and chance complete an undefeated hex.

Yeah...Osorio seems to still be coaching for his job, so I don't think they'll lay down.  They might wilt in the humidity though....

Thanks. Will these be streams that I'll be able to access from mobile? Ive been directed to something called acestream before which may be pc only and I couldn't get to work.
I can't answer that question as I don't watch on mobile.

I have only accessed them on PC/laptop but they have always been excellent when I have used them.

#MLS NEWS: Minnesota United FC midfielder Kevin Molino voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

======================================

Good news is that Molino is suspended for tonights game for Trinidad.

Assume the the first two games were flipped for the last two games in the hex.

ie: Panama/@T&T were the first two games and Mexico/@CR were the last two games

Which of the following two statements was more likely to play out:

1) The US picks up 4-6 points in those first two games, Klinsmann remains coach and the US qualifies comfortably with two games remaining in hex

2) The US picks up 3 or less points in those first two games, Klinsmann still gets fired along the way, and the US does not achieve a top 3 spot.

Meh.  Arena, Bradley, Klins and now Arena again.  The quality and results are about the players over a lot of games.

Klins appeared to have lost the team and it was time for him to go, but just six months earlier had them playing as well as any US team, ever (4-0 vs CR, 1-0 vs Paraguay, 2-0 vs Ecuador before Jones lost his mind).

The first one.  Even in those 2 games JK was basically picking the best 11 (Chandler notwithstanding).  As it was we should have tied Mexico at home.

I would say 1, but delete the word "comfortably", because its the concacaf hex so that's never going to be the case.

Torrential/comical down pours in Port of Spain right now :(
hmmm...where is the stadium located??  This tweet below is brand new ...

Just arrived at the Ato Boldon Stadium to sunny skies. Ground outside seems pretty dry too. #usmnt

This time around I think we deserve Pot 3.  It is nice though that this system would give us a chance to get to a Pot 2 if we had a satisfactory enough qualifying campaign.  Too bad they are ruining the World Cup format 8 years from now

I guess (after my geography fail yesterday) that Oto Boldon Stadium is in Couva, which is 45 minutes away from Port of Spain.

qualifying is one of the great things in the entire sport and they are flushing it down the drain.  :(

I guess the only silver lining is that in 8 years there will be no qualifying for the US anyway but my interest in the international game is going to plummet I think.  I find it very sad but there is almost no way they are going to go back to the near perfect format I fear.

Wait, wut? Seriously? Hadn't heard this. Bummer.

oh goodie!  Sometimes the torrential downpours are very isolated so maybe Couva has avoided it....
I read somewhere that rain is expected tonight.

I actually don't think the slop hurts the possession team against a countering team.  I know Floppo feels differently and he certainly played at much, much, much * higher level than I did.  But my sense is that a sloppy field would pretty much neuter the counter.  they'd have to worry about s freak slip, and (most of all) worry about set piece defense.  But I like the US's chances in that type of game.  Even more than I like the US's chances in any game against T&T.

*Space constraints prevent me from putting in enough "much"es.

The WC is expanding to 48 teams in 2026 when the US/Mexico/ and Canada host.

Even worse, the group stage is now going to be just 3 teams and PK's will be used to decide every game if tied to prevent collusion.

It is going to suck as a fan.  Basically Qualifying is almost meaningless and then you can wait for 4 years to lose a game on pk's and be done after two games.

I can't overstate how much I hate this.

I think you've convinced me. It's a terrible format, terrible enough to really crap this tourney up.

Yeah, that sucks.  :kicksrock:

Curious if the new draw system could lead to 6 groups with 2 Euros, 1 with 1 Euro and 1 with no Euros.  Seems like it could.

I agree from what little we have read it could happen.  There is an outside chance of a 2 team Conmebol group I think, depending on how things shake out tonight.

no it couldn't have 2 CONMEBOL

would have to be a CONMEBOL/CONCACAF/AFRICA/ASIA group - in pot order.

Can't have two from CONMENOL in the same group...only 2 UEFA teams.  Ergo, the only scenario where a CONCACAF team wouldn't get a UEFA team would be something like Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Australia.  The CONCACAF team would have to be in Pot 2.
