West Ham is looking to sign one of the top defenders in MLS to bolster its squad. Unfortunately for the Premier League club, work permit issues may scupper the transfer.

Sky Sports in England reported that West Ham’s inability to acquire a work permit for Aaron Long may slam the breaks on a potential transfer from the New York Red Bulls. Long reportedly has a $5 million release clause and Sky Sports claims Long also has interest from Marseille, Fiorentina, Rennes and Lyon.

Long’s career has been a long story of never giving up, and his career growth over the past few seasons has been very impressive. After barely playing for the Seattle Sounders in 2014 and then playing as a holding midfielder for the USL club, Sounders 2 in 2015, Long was moved back to centerback and excelled in 2016 with New York Red Bulls II. He led the side to the USL Cup title and was named defender of the year.

A year later, with the New York Red Bulls first team, he solidified and stepped right into the backline and is now the defending MLS Defender of the Year. His play in 2017 led to getting a couple of caps in 2018 for the U.S. Men’s National Team under coach Dave Sarachan, and he’s moved into a starting role under Gregg Berhalter, starting five of the six USMNT games at the 2019 Gold Cup this summer.

Unfortunately, UK work permit laws mean that Long – with the U.S. now in the top 30 – would have had to play at least 60 percent of all USMNT games over the past two years, and that just hasn’t happened. It’s a common issue over the past decade for USMNT players looking to move to England. Juan Agudelo never qualified for a work permit while at Stoke City in 2014, while Zack Steffan still hasn’t earned a work permit to stay with Manchester City.

Have we ever had a player playing in Austria before?

Austria Wien's sporting director Ralf Muhr says the chances are "quite good" that the club signs defender Erik Palmer-Brown on loan from Manchester City. The 22 year old is seen as a viable option for the club, as one of their starting central defenders is out until late fall.

This is good news for Weah.  Last shoe to fall is Pepe. If he leaves Weah should get a ton of chances to impress.

Both Gloster and Soto made Hannover’s 18 today, but didn’t play.  They lost 2-1.

Their LB got a red - curious if Gloster gets to play in his place next match.

The lineups are not out yet but Dest gave an indication in his instagram that he may be starting today for Ajax, in his first ever competitive game for the first team.

"competitive"

I believe it's the Dutch equivalent of the Charity Shield.

ETA:  it still moved.

It just occurred to me that Dest is getting the start for Ajax at LB over Pierie, who's played a lot of LB for Dutch YNTs, including serving as captain of their U19s. Pierie's on the bench behind Dest.

Ironically, Pierie's is also eligible to play for the US..

This is interesting.  In Dortmund's game today, Hazard got hurt early at the 12 minute mark and Gio was the first one off the bench to replace him.....

Annndd Reyna just screwed a Udinese defender into the ground to get off a cross. Now he’s beaten a guy to get off a shot that’s deflected out for a corner. And almost earned a penalty off the ensuing corner while I type this. Holy cow

Reyna must have juked out the feed because they are experiencing technical difficulties now.

ETA - It's back

Dortmund game called off 7 minutes early because of the conditions. It was pretty ridiculous- the ball would just come to a dead stop any time it landed, plus it was getting a little chippy.

I remember Terrance Boyd “emerged” in Austria

The last six months or so have been a revelation.  We've got so many genuinely talented players coming through all at once.  Dwarfs anything that's gone before.

Reyna doesn't turn 17 until freaking November.

We are a healthy Tyler Adams away from easily the most interesting European season ever.  And even if Adams does not play, there are so many things to follow.

I was thinking about Pulisic in regards to this:

They both went to Germany at the same age.

Pulisic started at the U17's and then went to U19's and then eventually to the first team.

Even if Gio starts at the U19's, he is going to be starting at a higher level than Pulisic.

Making the first team at 16 seemed crazy to me a few months ago.  It probably still is a long shot but the fact that he is still with the first team well after the US part of the tour was over tells me something.

Miazga and Novakovich are on the bench for Reading; CP starting for Chelsea this morning.

Pulisic out after the half. An incredibly average performance. Touch was a little heavy didn’t really take on defenders and a lot of back and sideways passing. Miazga and Novakovich on

This kid gets better every game.  People are now even wondering whether he will get released for the U17 WC.

At 16, he’s an integral part of a big @SoundersFC away win over the Dynamo. Prodigy

Does anyone have a list of the players we could realistically lose to other countries?  By realistic, I don't mean the random German or French kids that have US ties that have no hope of ever being called by those top countries.

Off the top of my head we have

Alvarez*, Leyva, Soto, Ledezema, Mendez, Pepi, and Dest

*Imo, he is already gone as he is the only one of this group not playing with the US.

Ulysses Llanez.

Jesus Ferreira

Dumb of me to forget Llanez.

Jesus is an interesting one to consider.  Is he finally US eligible?  Typically Colombia has a lot of solid attackers but they are obviously not top tier in terms of depth.

I am unaware if Colombia has ever tried to call him into a youth team.  I know he has not played for them but was unsure if they have inquired.

I'm not sure if he's eligible yet or not, but he will be soon if he's not.  I don't think he's likely to be a huge star that Colombia or the US would regret missing out on, but he's still young and you never know how an 18 year old will develop.
