I just can't..........

======

During the Investigation, Mrs. Reyna explained that Mrs. Berhalter was her “best friend for 30 to 40 years.”

With the return of Zendejas (had a 20 minute cameo) and Booth (who made the bench though not the game) this weekend, I think both will be in the squad when Hudson names it later this week.

What other new names does everyone want in this squad?
Booth is the only uncapped guy that comes to mind that should get a call.

Recalls for players who were left out of WC may be interesting to gauge.

Sadly I don't want to waste much thought on this because with out a coach in place, it is all kind of meaningless.

8. Mr. Berhalter took responsibility for his actions. He immediately self-reported the incident
to his head coach and academic counselor. He made efforts to apologize to Mrs. Berhalter. He told
his parents and family what happened. He sought counseling. He did volunteer work at a women’s
prison. He stayed away from Mrs. Berhalter, at her request, for approximately seven to eight
months, and only began to interact with her again when she reached out to him at or around the
fall of the next academic year.
You're never, ever, going to convince me that Berhalter is some sort of malevolent force, twisting a story for his own selfish purposes or giving players PT based on his personal like or dislike for them. That's not who he seemed to me before all this happened and the above is textbook how to handle a **** up and grow. I admire him.

Maybe he shouldn't be coach of the USMNT because we can do better, fair enough, but the stuff underpinning a lot of the "he should go" movement just seems like a big steaming pile to me.

Now that we have so much more info, here is the blame pie

1% for GGG to having mentioned the discipline in a public setting
5% to Gio for sulking when told he would not play
94% to the Reyna's for what looks like consistent, horrendous behavior
Hard to argue against those numbers . Gio needing the second talk would up my % for him.
Oh, I missed something in my first read through I think. Can you post the section on the second talk as I must have missed that...

The fact he did all this at 18 years old is unbelievable to me. Maybe it was just because he was a high level athlete at a big program at the time, but what kid does all this stuff because of a fight with his girlfriend? I never did anything like this, but had lots of regrettable moments in my teen years, especially at bar time, and would never have thought about involving my family, going to counseling, volunteer work etc. There are some minor new facts in here about that incident but if anything he comes out looking even better as a person based on this report.

Mr. Berhalter identified the Wales match as an inflection point in Mrs. Berhalter’s relationship
with Mrs. Reyna. Before that match, he said, Mrs. Berhalter and Mrs. Reyna spoke on the phone
daily. “They had talked every day for decades
. And it ended immediately.” He said in the stands
after the match, surrounded by the other families, “they didn’t speak.”
That's legit sad.

I posted somthing similar above. She said they were best friends for almost 4 decades. Just really really sad to see.

Gio's behavior in the Qatar camp is a completely separate issue, really unrelated to this report, but he looks very bad imo. Not just loafing at the one scrimmage but also several practices - basically taking his ball and going home because he wasn't getting his way. Its obvious to me Stewart, McBride and others were all on the coach's side of this thing but their hands were tied. I've already moved on from Berhalter as a coach for the USMNT, but its really sickening that these monstrous parents will probably have succeeded in their main goal from this ####show. I think any coach not from this close-knit club puts his butt on a plane home that day. He really should be grateful to Berhalter for protecting him the way he did at the time and since then.

I give him a ton of credit for being honest and looking for help.

If anything, GGG even protected his wife because he never once said anything about her hitting him in the face which started everything. That part I only learned from the investigation.

The bus incident as well as the whole Friends & Family thing in Qatar. What petulant children they are, and it seems Claudio was even worse than his wife.

C. Gio Reyna Training for the 2022 World Cup
During our investigation, Mr. Stewart described to us concerns related to Gio Reyna’s
performance during training in the days leading up the 2022 World Cup games. Mr. Stewart
explained that coaches had concerns about Gio Reyna’s level of fitness for the first game because
he was recovering from an injury. In addition, Mr. Stewart told us that Gio Reyna’s performance
was poor during a scrimmage game because he “walk[ed] around, and mope[d] around the whole
time.” Mr. Stewart said although it looked like he might still be injured, he mostly “seemed ticked
off” and “did not appear to be trying at all.” Mr. Stewart told us that Mr. Berhalter talked to Gio
Reyna after that scrimmage
to inform him that his effort was not satisfactory, and he needed to
“adjust his mentality.” However, Mr. Stewart said that Gio Reyna’s behavior continued for a
couple of days of training even after the scrimmage and discussion with Mr. Berhalter. For
example, Mr. Stewart said players were required to do sprints on training days after a scrimmage
and “other guys were busting their tails doing the sprints” while “Gio didn’t do anything.” Mr.
Stewart said this behavior continued after U.S. played in their first game at the 2022 World Cup.

Mr. Stewart said Gio Reyna’s behavior eventually led to a conversation among U.S. Soccer
officials regarding whether Gio Reyna should be sent home. Mr. Stewart said Mr. Berhalter led
the discussion and recapped the concerns relating to Gio Reyna’s performance and behavior. He
asked for feedback from the coaching staff and their opinion on whether Gio Reyna should be sent
home. Mr. Stewart said it was a balanced, objective conversation. Ultimately, at the end of the
discussion Mr. Berhalter made the decision to let Gio Reyna stay at the 2022 World Cup. However,
Mr. Stewart said that they determined next steps regarding how to deal with Gio Reyna’s behavior.
First, Mr. Berhalter had another conversation with Gio Reyna to communicate to him that his
current behavior was unacceptable.
Second, Mr. Berhalter informed Gio Reyna of the level of
effort expected from him. Third, Gio Reyna was required to apologize to his teammates. Finally,
Gio Reyna was informed that if his unacceptable behavior continued then he would be sent home.
Mr. Stewart said that there was no reason to send Gio Reyna home after this last conversation with
him.

Holy hell

===========

Mr. Stewart informed us that Mr. Reyna began making complaints to him in November 2019
during the FIFA U-17 World Cup. He said the complaints were about Gio Reyna’s lack of playing
time, inadequate travel arrangements (specifically, not flying business class), and other instances
when U.S. Soccer did not meet Mr. Reyna’s standards. Mr. Stewart also provided
contemporaneous text messages from this period. Mr. Stewart commented that in his more than 20
years “in this business,” he has never had these types of discussions with other players’ parents.
Mr. Berhalter said at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in November 2019, Mr. Reyna texted him
about the coach, stating, “he’s the worst coach.” Mr. Berhalter said that “when things don’t go
great for Gio, [the Reynas] pivot and go into attack mode.” Mr. Berhalter said that what occurred
at the 2022 FIFA World Cup was similar to what occurred at the U-17 World Cup. Mr. Berhalter
provided text messages to us that he received from Mr. Reyna in 2019 and 2020 complaining about
Gio Reyna’s treatment, travel arrangements, and coaches

Outside advisors: we think you should hire a legal firm to investigate.

Earnie Stewart: (laughs)

Berhalter: ahh, geez. Seriously?

Brian McBride: c'mon now.

Stewart: (gets phone out, scrolls through texts) Hey guys, wait a minute. Do you have anything from Claudio Reyna in your texts?

McBride: (chuckles) Yeah.

Berhalter: (rolls eyes) Yeah, year's worth. You should see...

(room goes silent as Stewart, McBride and Berhalter look back at the advisor)

In a way it is kind of disappointing that there is no legal punishment towards Danielle.

Her words about GGG "beating the **** out of her" cost the federation a SIGNIFICANT amount of money and the words were at best a complete exaggeration on what happened, at worst a punitive lie.

I know it's not yelling "fire" in a crowded theater, but there should be some sort of cost to what she did especially when it caused so much time, energy and money to spent on it to prove it wrong.

Apart from them being best friends for decades, the other thing that is shocking is that the report notes she did not even witness the incident. Just the worst kind of human being. I guess someone could still file a lawsuit against the Reynas for this stuff, but I can't see that happening. Nonetheless, there will be a cost to her and Claudio. They will certainly be pariahs in the community for life. Maybe Claudio could get a job at Leverkusen or Sunderland I guess but we have to assume he is untouchable here for a long long time. We all just have to hope that Gio can survive all this unscathed in terms of the national team.

His talent all but assures him of at least another shot at the national team. I bet even GGG would agree with this if he unlikely gets rehired.

But if anything close to this happens again, he may be done for a long time.

Another very telling comment:

Investigators said, "We were impressed with Mr. Berhalter’s candor and demeanor during the Investigation. ... We were less impressed with the Reynas’ cooperation during the Investigation."

Hey did you guys catch the part about where Claudio has for years been complaining about the treatment of his kids (mostly Gio) with in US Soccer. Who else is Claudio complaining about? I am not aware of any other male Reyna in the US system. Does Gio have a sister?

I am both delighted by the entertainment value and embarrassed that I have been a fan of this team going back to the 80's

@MLSist

In the world of villainous catchphrases, "I CAN MAKE ONE PHONE CALL AND DO ONE INTERVIEW AND HIS COOL SNEAKERS AND BOUNCE PASSES WILL BE GONE" is so deeply hilarious and incredible. What a banner day for American soccer.

I want to know who was actually representing the Reynas. That's some really, really bad legal representation. I understand telling a client not to talk to the FBI or the SEC. Yeah, shut the **** up. But it should have taken about 5 minutes to realize that the Reynas were under no actual legal jeopardy and that refusing to talk to A&B would make them look like cartoon villains (and leave Claudio pretty much unemployable on this continent). My legal advice would have been for Danielle to call Ros and patch this stuff up so that they could make a joint statement. Gregg apologizes for throwing Gio under the bus publicly, and the Reynas apologize for losing their minds during the World Cup (and nobody needs to hear that they've been insane for years).

Could it date back to before Jack's death?
I think they said the complaints started in 2016. Jack died a few years before that.

I was thinking maybe the lawyer decided his clients are so thick-headed, uncoachable and stupid he couldn't let them speak freely to A&B on the record. What can you say about a person whose first instinct when interviewed in a third party professional investigation is to lie about a conversation she had when she knows they are going to interview everyone? The other thought is maybe Claudio just refused despite his lawyer advising him otherwise (been there.) Maybe there is another explanation, but I agree it is incredibly stupid. Also, I can't imagine there's any way back between the two women.

Is there a chance he gets rehired?

Gregg Berhalter says, "First and foremost, Rosalind & I have respect for the process U.S. Soccer had to go through. We're grateful that it's concluded and we look forward to what's next."

Berhalter did not want to comment further on the report. He is in England and has attended several matches unrelated to the USMNT job. (He's out of contract.) A source says he is "open to all options and also exploring what's going on in other places."

US Soccer put out a statement:

"Given the investigators’ conclusion that there is no legal impediment to employing him, Gregg Berhalter remains a candidate to serve as head coach of the Men’s National Team."

I almost hope they rehire him just to spite the Reyna’s - they sound like two huge ********.

They clearly are the big losers in the mess. I mean it looked bad before the report but with everything confirmed and so much more listed that we did not lnow about, their reps, at least in this country, are pretty much irreparable I think.

I think Gio will be given the benefit of the doubt here since while he clearly has some maturity issues, he can't be blamed for the insanity of his parents.

I also think GGG comes out of this as clean as could be hoped for given the potential ugliness of the whole affair.

I personally think it benefits everyone involved (Gio, GGG and US Soccer) for the US to hire a different coach for this cycle and for GGG to grab a league job some where and for the Reyna parents to disappear for good.

Yeah, I don’t blame Gio for any of his parents nonsense but having to be told twice about his attitude AT THE FREAKING WORLD CUP is almost enough for me to say good riddance to his USMNT career. It’s inexcusable at this level no matter who the coach is.

good thing you don't run the French team :)

Would be even easier call as they are replacing world class with world class. I’m on record saying Gio may already be our best player (when he’s playing) but I would find it hard to overlook what he did.

oh dear, looks like Claudio is not going down with out a fight. Bad look for the lawyer to bring up Jack's death imo. (click on links for the lawyers statement)

Meantime, Claudio Reyna's attorneys say, contrary to what's stated in the report, he did not refuse to be interviewed. "In fact, he tried multiple times to arrange to provide information and to answer any/all questions and allegations."

From the Reynas’ agent, Dan Segal … #usmnt

I skimmed through the report earlier today and I think it says he would not do an interview but offered a "proffer" of his testimony - which likely means he agreed to respond in writing to written questions and provide a written statement.

Not sure who the dude Lalas had on is, but Alexi retweeted the clip I'm quoting and followed it with an "Amen". I'm not sure how to feel about agreeing with him so fervently.
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas
“Gregg Berhalter did literally every single thing that was asked of him…yet…every step of the way, just piles & piles of ‘BerhalterOut’…I just don’t know what you people want and it’s a shame that you’re so f-ing loud.” @brendanhunting on 🇺🇸⚽️ trolls

Of all the crap Claudio did, I believe in the end this is what will bury him.

Once the sponsors of Austin FC get wind of this, Reyna is going to be forced to dissolve all relationships with the club I bet. He has already resigned his GM spot but remains employed as an advisor.

SRA Officials

@PSRAofficials

Mr. Reyna’s sexist & misogynistic comments about female referees are deplorable. The PSRA considers his actions disqualifying for employment in MLS & beyond. MLS cannot provide a haven for Mr. Reyna’s opinions while also celebrating the quality & diversity of its own Officials.
