I think this is where streaming service is going. Amazon was only a warning shot, the other shoe is about to fall in about 2-3 years.

I cannot imagine paying any non-negligible price (15 cents? Sure, whatever) to watch any one particular football game unless the Bengals were in it.
Same, only if my team was in it. And so far I have refused to sign up for more streaming services just for a game. We already have Prime so that worked out. But I'm not paying for P+ unless my team's involved. And then I would only sign up for the one month and cancel.

It's still an event for me so I'd pay for it, although we have laws over here preventing key sporting events from being shown on pay TV, let alone PPV

The NFL game is built around advertising breaks and timeouts. Its really hard to imagine the flow of an NFL game without numerous regular commercial breaks. Or is the suggestion customers would pay for the game and still have to sit through commercials?
I would think so, just within reason. I think 2 30 sec spots on a turnover or punt/downs is what they are shooting for.

True, there is a sharp difference between regular ad rates and SB ad rates. They may not want to risk this golden goose

It would seem the advertising dollar loss might be more than the PPV gain.
That's probably why it's floated out this far in advance.
Even if the commercials are all still there, people that watch for the commercials aren't going to pay to watch commercials, are they??

Also, I'm not sure how soon it could realistically be PPV. How many people would pay for it and at what price? I think it would be hard to get the right price point that would get enough people to make up for what the NFL currently makes on it based on the current system. The annual rights fees paid by the networks are driven significantly by the fact that they get a Super Bowl, the best rated event of all TV.

probably not, but I hadn't considered the possibility of commercials. That might make up the money, though I still doubt they could get enough people to pay enough dollars to make it worth it, at least not for a decade.

Good point. Commercials have been a landmine for cable for decades. HBO, Showtime, etc. They have navigated that landscape going on years now. Add Peacock and MAX (HBO), and Peacock + , AMC + . Where does it end? It will be soon. Probably with no comercials first for a fee then watch at a cost with commercials but it is comming I fear. For all of us.

I would if they did this:

Run hot mic's on everyone. NFL FILMS already has everybody miked up for this. Run it live during the game and charge $49.99 for the PPV. I've always wanted to hear what's going on in the trenches, the trash talk, what is being said in the huddle...etc.....

Run it on a 20 second delay so a producer can control the mic flow and bleep out proprietary info like the actual play call or whatever.

Call it:

The commercials are infuriating. That's why I love red zone so much. I watch Saints games and red zone. That's it. I really can't stay awake anymore for Monday or Thursday games because of the endless non stop commercials. I fall asleep in my chair almost every time.

I would happily and enthusiastically pay cash or subscription prices to eliminate the ads. I don't see how they could do it for just one game though. Those commercial breaks are planned time outs for the players and coaches, and they would have to approach the whole game differently. I think it would be tough to make big changes like that for just one week.

I would pay, but I'm in a fantasy football forum in May.

I think the people that decide not to pay and so don't watch would tend to walk away from football all together. Why pay attention if you can't see the game that it's all about. I think it would cost the league far more in ads and fans than it would be worth (but I will admit they may no a little bit more about that than I). I think that game is the hook (and party) that brings the casual fan to watch and pay attention.

I would pay if it was reasonable and I didn't have other alternatives (bar, friends house, etc) readily available. I really hope it doesn't go this way as it is kind of a slap in the face to the fan.

Yeah I don't even watch most of the evening games, just look at the highlights online the next morning. Saturday and Sunday afternoon I mix my home team with RedZone and whoever is showing half time highlights in college.

One playoff game will be on Paramount+ this year.
is that true? I heard Peacock, not Paramount+

It is on peacock.

But won’t they also show it on NBC?
My understanding is that one game will be peacock only (other than in the 2 local markets)

Wow. Did not realize that. Disturbing.

I would probably go to a party and toss in a few bucks to split the cost. It would make money in the short term but be a long term net negative for the sport. See boxing.

Not sure the old fat cats care about the future.
Seems like they wanna run it that way

This was my thought. The ol' UFC, boxing, WWF PPV technique. Get your friend with the best TV/living room set up to buy it and everyone else chips in.

Watcha ya talking about?

The league has been spot on for 5 plus decades.

Would find a way to watch it. Either pay myself, go to a friend's, or a bar. Either way, wouldn't be missing the game if that's what the 'no' in your poll means.

eye pee tee vee. just to keep bots and such away. 4 letters. sound it out. that's how MAAAANY ppl would be watching the super bowl if it went PPV

MoP would pay top dollar to remove all scrolling tickers on the bottom of the screen.
I would like the ability to remove the game clock, score, all of it so I could enjoy the full view of my TV screen without any ads of any kind.
If I really need a live update or clock winding down late, let me decide when that gets plastered across the bottom or one of the corners.

New here?

Hazy IPAs in May in South Florida
The Ever Haze by Tripping Animals out of Doral/Miami has to be tasted to be understood
Makes Civil Society's Fresh out of Jupiter taste like a bunch of kids went into the chemistry lab and made beer.
Fresh sells like hot cakes in South Florida

This will all make sense in coming days

Would not pay but would absolutely stream it illegally and not lose one second of sleep, much like I do for UFC/Boxing PPVs and football every Sunday during the season.

I pay enough for everything else in life, I'm not paying to watch sports.

i know i'm not typical, but i so disagree that the Super Bowl is what the NFL is all about. i strongly dislike the constant over hyped spectacle of that event, and haven't watched it live in at least a half dozen years.

the game is frequently not very good, and i can always watch later if it is.

meanwhile, i watch at least two NFL games each week during the regular and pre seasons (despite my growing disgust and frustration with the quality of the product due to rules changes and officiating).

that said, of course i would watch the Steelers.

Hunt, Mara, Rooney, etc >>>>>> Snyder, Jones, etc.

Give it time. The new brand of owners is slowly pissing away what made the NFL great for all the teams (and fans) one decision toward more money at all costs at a time.

One more day for the draft, one more day of the week with games, one more holiday with games, a few more playoff teams, a few more commercial breaks, a few less games on free TV for all, soon a few more teams, etc, etc, etc.

Yet they lie their asses off when it comes to every major "investigation" the league conducts, and they expect everyone to buy their BS. It's more and more insulting each year, and eventually a levee breaks. For some it never will, and a sucker is born every minute, so I fully expect the graft to get worse before it gets better.

Maybe a few more owners have to get forced to sell because they did horrible things behind the scenes, maybe a few more cities have to be abandoned by their teams, maybe a few other cities have to get hit with multi-billion dollar stadium costs.

Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. By all appearances the NFL has stopped just being a pig.
