I got let out of work at noon yesterday due to blizzard conditions in Denver -- which started a pretty epic little afternoon/night of drinking strong beers:
Pliny the Elder
Bourbon County Regal Rye imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels with blackberries, candied cherries, fresh sour cherries, and sea salt
Rare Barrel Map of the Sun golden sour ale aged in oak barrels with apricots
Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break Natale imperial porter with sour cherries
Terrapin Wake-n-Bake imperial coffee oatmeal stout
Evil Twin Soft DK imperial stout
Surly Abrasive imperial IPA
The Regal Rye was pretty delicious, although perhaps not as good as Cherry Rye or Backyard Rye from past years. I got lots of espresso/roasted coffee, really prominent oak barrel notes, rye whiskey, caramel, chocolate covered-cherries, brown sugar, blackberries, raspberries, dark fruits, and some mild saltiness that lingered on the palate. I didn't particularly love the lingering saltiness that left you with a tingling sensation of salt on your tongue -- it just seemed somewhat distracting from the overall flavor of the beer. That said, it was a really enjoyable drinking experience.
The Rare Barrel Map of the Sun was fantastic. Huge fuzzy apricot and peach flavors with the perfect degree of sourness in my opinion. Everything I have ever had from Rare Barrel has been awesome (i.e., Cosmic Dust, Ensorcelled, Dubious Nights, Home Sour Home, Impossible Soul). They are probably my top target for beer trading right now.
