Yeah, I have seen there beers in Michigan before, but never purchased because there are so many freaking Michigan beers I love. However, the local bar down the street had it on tap today, so I tried it out. I really liked it.

Picked up a GI Big John yesterday, I put it in my basement "cellar" with the GI Rare, Bourbon COunty Coffee, Bourbon County Vanilla, and Bourbon County. Maybe save some of those for my trip to Dark Lord Day in a couple weeks.

I walked into a small local corner store in central FL and found Victory Golden Monkey. This was like a convenience store that sold tobacco and mostly domestic beer. I was

Just bought a case of Weyerbacher Fifteen last week, a Smoked Imperial Stout.Me too.
Yeah, living here in Pennsylvania almost equidistant from Victory, Tröegs, and Weyerbacher definitely sucks. 
Throw in more local craft breweries like Yards, Lancaster, Stoudts, & Allentown Brewworks, and life is really awful.

These three breweries make that particular region of central PA pretty amazing in terms of beer.Then add in places like Appalatian Brewing Company in Harrisburg (same as Troegs) that brew their own beer and have an abby bar.Yeah, living here in Pennsylvania almost equidistant from Victory, Tröegs, and Weyerbacher definitely sucks.

Bells doesn't distribute (at all) here in Western NY. I have access to pretty much anything from PA and NY and most of New England, the big west coast breweries (Stone, Lagunitas, etc.) and a small handful of midwest beers (Goose Island - just started distro here in January-ish of last year, Jolly Pumpkin - just started distro in like Sept of last year). The vast majority of the midwest is like a wasteland.Not that I'm complaining...still plenty of Ithaca, Victory, Troegs, Weyerbacher, Horseheads, Smuttynose, Long Trail, Middle Ages, etc. here...but if I want to get Bells, Founders, whatever from the midwest, I can't get it here.

Took some time to finish but it was great. I went on to a Flower Power after that then called it a night.I just picked up some South Shore Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Mint Stout. Not sure of the taste on this one but excited to try one in the coming days and three in the cellar for a later date.#### yeah

I don't think I had a beer since Christmas until last night. No reason. Still drinking wine, tequila is always medicinal. But craving smooth malty beer last night I went with Scotch Ale. It was exactly what I wanted. So I want recommendations for more.
Screw bitter hops. Scotch Ales, Doppel Bocks, and I guess Barleywines are what I seek. I've always enjoyed Newcastle and Fat Tire was a staple for awhile, but I'm looking for more substance like the AleSmith Wee Heavy I had last night. I've gone on a chocolate stout binge in the past and want to avoi them too.

If you want something relatively inexpensive, readily available, and comes in cans for beach/pool usage, try Old Chub. I don't dig chocolate stout, but when I'm in the mood for a big malty beer I go for big imperial stouts. Some of the best (like Bell's Expedition) need some time in the cellar though. I just boxed up two six packs each of Expedition and Big Foot '11 in my basement and wrote "2014" one one box and "2015" on the other. Got some of my big abv homebrew in there as well that needs to mellow.I don't think I had a beer since Christmas until last night. No reason. Still drinking wine, tequila is always medicinal. Just found out the gift the wife got me for my upcoming birthday. She has set-up a beer tour in Michigan. 3 days and 3 nights eating, touring, and obviously drinking at Bells, Founders, New Holland, Arcadia, Dark Horse, and Jolly Pumpkin...plus she said she will have lots of spending money to bring beer home with us.

For example, Three Philosophers is a Belgian style beer but the description on Ommegang's website says "luscious blend of rich malty ale and cherry lambic". The first review on Beer Advocate for Delirium Nocturnum says "Great huge malt scents with a wonderful cherry aroma bursting through. Wonderful flavors, with a great thick, rich, and dark maltiness..." Idea being, none of these are an IPA, and they are described as rich and malty. He said he wanted a 'smooth malty beer' and I find Belgian Tripel, and Quadruple's to be much heavier on the malts, and not very hoppy at all.

Gotcha. I'm generally not a fan of the "Belgian-y" stuff (though obviously there are very notable exceptions). I hate to throw that blanket on it, I know it is a flawed way to put it, but I'm not sure how else to say it. Some malty Belgian Dark Strongs are pretty damn good, but I've found them to be harder rarer than the ones I don't care for.
