What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

Victory Golden Monkey
Underrated beer....I do like this one.
Oh good, grabbed sixer today. Also, sipped some Big Sky Moose Drool and Lagunitas Little Sumpin Ale. I had never had either brand before, but the local pub is now carrying them. Good stuff.
Lagunitas has a very wide distribution, they're widely available here. Some folks think they're a little "too big", but I've never had a bad beer from them. Plenty of quality offerings...big fan of Brown Shugga myself.
Yeah, I have seen there beers in Michigan before, but never purchased because there are so many freaking Michigan beers I love. However, the local bar down the street had it on tap today, so I tried it out. I really liked it.

stone brewing co. Arrogant ******* Ale while riding the train along the coast from San diego to santa barbara  :banned:

eta--big fan of Lagunitas, but brown sugga is a little sweet imho

Goose Island Pepe Nero...no idea what to expect here.
This is good, but I probably won't get it again. It's basically Ithaca's Cold Front with a little less flavor and an added chocolatey finish. I can get a 6-pack of Cold Front for like 1.5 of these...

Mee three.

I walked into a small local corner store in central FL and found Victory Golden Monkey. This was like a convenience store that sold tobacco and mostly domestic beer. I was :excited: . I was also  because it is brewed in PA and as far as I know it is not distributed in FL... at least I never see it.

Got to talking to the guy who runs the shop. Turns out he is originally from Collegevill, PA and picks up some when he visits then brings it to FL to sell. I was like  .

Just had a New Glarus Unplugged Berliner Weiss.

LOVED it. Tasted like a Granny Smith. Real smooth too. If anyone has any spares let me know.

Early went to a Deschuttes tasting. Got 4oz pours of '07 and '08 Abyss. the '08 was more mellow. Both fantastic.

Have you tried New Galrus' Apple Ale? I missed out on the Berliner Weiss, but the Apple Ale is an excellent beer. It is still available in some areas.

Just purchased:

Tröegs Anthology #2

A sublime collection of our finest brews. The Anthology Sampler Case contains an assortment of HopBack Amber Ale, DreamWeaver Wheat Ale, Pale Ale, and JavaHead.

Along with a sixer of Sunshine Pils

New Glarus Enigma with some stinky blue cheese.

The other night I had New Belgium Abbey Ale and Sierra Nevada Glissade Bock. Both very tasty.

Great beer...the unplugged has some great ones.

I am permanently ISO Two Hearted.
Is it really hard to find where you are? They sell it all over the place down here.Bell's HopSlam tonight on the hand drawn cask at redlight redlight. This should be a treat.
Bells doesn't distribute (at all) here in Western NY. I have access to pretty much anything from PA and NY and most of New England, the big west coast breweries (Stone, Lagunitas, etc.) and a small handful of midwest beers (Goose Island - just started distro here in January-ish of last year, Jolly Pumpkin - just started distro in like Sept of last year). The vast majority of the midwest is like a wasteland. Not that I'm complaining...still plenty of Ithaca, Victory, Troegs, Weyerbacher, Horseheads, Smuttynose, Long Trail, Middle Ages, etc. here...but if I want to get Bells, Founders, whatever from the midwest, I can't get it here.

How YOU feeling this morning, guy?
The hookers at the supermarket down the street say hi

I don't think I had a beer since Christmas until last night. No reason. Still drinking wine, tequila is always medicinal. But craving smooth malty beer last night I went with Scotch Ale. It was exactly what I wanted. So I want recommendations for more.

Screw bitter hops. Scotch Ales, Doppel Bocks, and I guess Barleywines are what I seek. I've always enjoyed Newcastle and Fat Tire was a staple for awhile, but I'm looking for more substance like the AleSmith Wee Heavy I had last night. I've gone on a chocolate stout binge in the past and want to avoi them too.

Watcha got? :banned:

The store down the street from me just started carrying Bear Republic, picked up a six of Racer 5 and a 4-pack of Hop Rod Rye. Both are seriously amazing brews

These are my absolute favorite types of beer. Here are some suggestions:Three Philosophers - OmmegangSamichlaus (Austrian beer)Weyerbacher - Blithering IdiotTroegs - Troegenator Double BockDelirium TremmensDelirium NocturnumCigar City Brewing - Big Sound Scotch AleMcEweans Scottish AleThere is a seasonal from the Blue Moon line called Full Moon Winter Ale that I think is a good beer in this category. It's not the best, but it is probably a lot more reaidly available in stores around winter.Last I will leave you with probably my all time favorite: Young's Old Nick BarleywineI can't find this stuff anywhere anymore. I'm not sure they make it anymore. Last time I found it was at a 'package' store in CT sold in single bottles.

If you want something relatively inexpensive, readily available, and comes in cans for beach/pool usage, try Old Chub. It should be just what you're looking for.

I wish Founders would distribute to FL, but at least I can get Stone now. Bell's is all over the place and Weyerbacher is selling down here now.

Here are a few more:Unibroue Trois PistolesUnibroue La Fin Du MondeTripel KarmelietBelzebuth Pur Malt - these were sold in like a 3 pack with maybe 12 oz. bottles. I think they were around %13 - %14. The name Pur Malt is a good description

I don't dig chocolate stout, but when I'm in the mood for a big malty beer I go for big imperial stouts. Some of the best (like Bell's Expedition) need some time in the cellar though. I just boxed up two six packs each of Expedition and Big Foot '11 in my basement and wrote "2014" one one box and "2015" on the other. Got some of my big abv homebrew in there as well that needs to mellow.

I consider Racer 5 and Flower Power my "go-to" IPAs...I have at least one of the two in the apartment at all times. Big fan.

I fell hard for Rogue River's chocolate stout a couple years ago. I think it permanently broke my hoppy tastebuds. Thanks for the sugggestions guys. I am off to buy a few something... malty.

While solid picks, Jutz, most of those are in the Belgian style. Not sure that is what Chaos is looking for.

If you can get Wee Heavy, try Old Numbskull.

What part of the country are you in, Chaos?

Just found out the gift the wife got me for my upcoming birthday. She has set-up a beer tour in Michigan. 3 days and 3 nights eating, touring, and obviously drinking at Bells, Founders, New Holland, Arcadia, Dark Horse, and Jolly Pumpkin...plus she said she will have lots of spending money to bring beer home with us.

The beers I recommended in the first list below are in the double bock, barleywine, scotch ale category:Samichlaus (Austrian beer) - dopplebockWeyerbacher - Blithering Idiot - barleywineTroegs - Troegenator Double BockCigar City Brewing - Big Sound Scotch AleMcEweans Scottish AleYoung's - Old Nick - barleywineBelzebuth Pur Malt The beers I recommended below in this second list are more or less 'Belgian Style' beers.Three Philosophers - OmmegangDelirium TremmensDelirium NocturnumUnibroue Trois PistolesUnibroue La Fin Du MondeTripel KarmeletI included these Belgian Style beers because I still think they fit the taste profile of what Chaos is looking for. For example, Three Philosophers is a Belgian style beer but the description on Ommegang's website says "luscious blend of rich malty ale and cherry lambic". The first review on Beer Advocate for Delirium Nocturnum says "Great huge malt scents with a wonderful cherry aroma bursting through. Wonderful flavors, with a great thick, rich, and dark maltiness..." Idea being, none of these are an IPA, and they are described as rich and malty. He said he wanted a 'smooth malty beer' and I find Belgian Tripel, and Quadruple's to be much heavier on the malts, and not very hoppy at all.

Gotcha. I'm generally not a fan of the "Belgian-y" stuff (though obviously there are very notable exceptions). I hate to throw that blanket on it, I know it is a flawed way to put it, but I'm not sure how else to say it. Some malty Belgian Dark Strongs are pretty damn good, but I've found them to be harder rarer than the ones I don't care for.
