where will CJ play in 2014?Jets sign him (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

The New York Daily News reports the Jets have no concerns about free agent Chris Johnson's work ethic.
The Jets have been considered one of Johnson's potential suitors since before his release, but have yet to be officially linked to the ex-Titan. Word of potential visits has yet to leak, but CJ?K is reportedly hoping to find his new team by the middle of the week. With Johnson's track record well known and the free-agent barrel scraped bare, it shouldn't take long for him to sign.

come on falcons, jump on this!!!

Not sure how I feel about Johnson spliting w/ Ivory

Rotoworld:

The New York Daily News reports the Jets "really like" the idea of pairing free agent Chris Johnson with Chris Ivory, and that a potential deal will "come down to money."
According to reporter Manish Mehta, the Jets have no concerns about Johnson's work ethic. Johnson/Ivory would immediately become one of the league's best thunder and lightning duos, while CJ?K could operate as an every-down back were the injury-prone Ivory to miss time. Word has yet to leak of a Johnson visit to the Big Apple, but it's sounding like a good bet.

Rotoworld:

FOX Sports' Alex Marvez considers the Falcons unlikely to be in the hunt for free agent Chris Johnson.
The Falcons reportedly "discussed" a trade for Johnson before he was released, but their interest has apparently dried up. Officially a free agent since Monday afternoon, Johnson has yet to make a visit. He could be biding his time, but it's an obvious sign his market is cold.

With all three NY teams rumored to have interest, he needs to camp out in a hotel for a while. I've said there's no way he gets huge $ and I still think that-unless his agent gets NY teams bidding against each other.

He played with an injury most of last season, didn't he? Looked like he still had the straight line speed, but just couldn't cut like before.
the haters don't want to hear it
That seems to been have swept under the rug. The guy gutted out 16 games…..with a knee injury. He will have a bounce back season and imo provide some real value to a FF looking for a #3 RB flex play with upside to some huge games. That can be the difference in a FF season over the course of a season.

Imagine if he get's on a team that will utilize him far more in space and involve him in the passing game more. He has plenty of value to a team that needs a big play player.

The guy finished 9th and 7 pts from 6th among RBs yet he gets slogged like he finished 25th for the 3rd year in a row. He was a great value last year and looks like he could be a good one again this year.

Exactly…it's pretty comical actually.

Rotoworld:

The Denver Post does not expect the Broncos to pursue free agent RB Chris Johnson.
Yes, the Broncos' depth chart at running back (Montee Ball, C.J. Anderson, Ronnie Hillman) lacks experience. But the team believes Ball is ready to be the man and Johnson won't accept a "prove it" contract if he isn't going to get to prove it. Johnson would have more opportunities with the Jets as the lightning to Chris Ivory's thunder.

I never saw the Broncos as being in the mix to sign CJ, as they let Moreno walk for less money than what CJ will be looking for, and they seem to be happy with the development of Ball.

Chris Johnson won’t be trying out for any teamsPosted by Mike Florio on April 9, 2014, 1:08 PM EDT

As the Chris Johnson watch continues with nothing really to watch, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports raises an intriguing point on the whole visit-workout dynamic.

For street free agents (i.e., guys who were cut by other teams with ongoing contracts), visits must be reported to the league office. Tryouts, however, aren’t reported.

So it’s possible that, while Johnson has taken no visits, he could be engaging in private tryouts.

It’s possible, but it’s not happening. Per a league source, Johnson will not be engaging in private tryouts for anyone. The thinking is that he has generated six years of game film, and he’s a proven commodity. Either a team wants him, or a team doesn’t. There’s no need for Johnson to go run and cut and jump and do whatever a team may want to see him do before offering him a contract.

In fact, there’s a chance Johnson will sign a new contract without even taking a visit. He can, in theory, be interviewed by phone, without the team having to report it. Plus, after six years in the league, plenty of guys know him, either from playing with him or coaching him. It’s possible he’ll be signed without any direct communication with him.

In the wake of the Brandon Thomas ACL tear (more on that later), some agents are concerned about exposing players to private workouts. Johnson definitely won’t be doing one.

Ok, this is a bad idea unless hes still hurt. But when your work ethnic is question you should got out an perform, atleast hold a pro day or even film your 40.

Working out for CJ is rather useless IMO. I don't see it as a problem. The guy has been in the NFL long enough that teams know what they are getting. He will have to pass a physical and other medical probing before he's signed and that will uncover health issues.

I wish Johnson were still a Titan. He's a very good player but the money was too much. He should be a nice find for some team.

This makes no sense to me at all on many levels. On one hand, there is talk about injury limiting him in 2013. So I guess he would want you to throw that tape out. So as a GM, I am supposed to hand a guy premium RB $ based on just two+ year old tape? Nope. I might know what he COULD do a couple of years ago before the injury, but I don't know what he can do right now.

Passing a physical is not the same thing as performing on the field.

And as for no direct communication at all, that seems even stranger to me. Call me old fashioned, but before I give a guy 10, 15, 20 Million dollars, a good chunk of which will be guaranteed, I'd like to talk to him a little bit.

MAYBE if a guy was expecting to make close to the league minimum, AND he was basically healthy last year and I had the tape to look at, AND the guy is known for being a 100% team player with no mental/personality issues , I might be more lax in my evaluation process. But Johnson is in NONE of those categories.

It makes sense if you consider CJ never has to work again a day in his life if no one signs him.

There's not many teams that can afford him. No tryouts might have even scared away some that could. He might wind up begging the Titans to take him back before this is all over. There's certainly not many that can afford him and where he'd be the sure-bet starter. He ought to call Elway and ask what the most is he can afford, be part of a Supe team.

There's a difference between a tryout and a visit. If he visits the jets, they have to report it to the nfl. If he is in new york and they come to him to watch a tryout, it doesn't have to be reported. So he could easily have tried out for the jets, giants, bills and patriots right now, without ever getting on an airplane, and the news outlets wouldn't know.

What advantage does he get from this? Well, if he has a tryout, he may be able to set the parameters of what he is and isn't willing to do in terms of injury risk or field surface. He might want to do his running on turf, for example, because people will be looking at his speed numbers.

But the other value is that teams won't know who he visited with, which allows him to get a team to bid against themselves. Remember that he not only came onto the market late, but several of the teams that might have been interested were quoted early as saying they were out of the bidding. Maybe he was trying to salvage the best of a bad situation after the titans basically screwed him (justifiably or not).

It makes sense if you consider CJ never has to work again a day in his life if no one signs him.
Sure, if his goal is to NOT get hired, or ONLY get hired under his ideal scenario, the approach makes perfect sense. I assume that is NOT his goal at this point, but I could be wrong.

I guess my point is that I don't expect him to get hired under his ideal scenario (assuming the speculation about minimal interaction with suitors is at least partially coming from him). IF he wants to play AND he wants to make maximum money, my guess would be he's going to have to CONVINCE a team to do that. IMO it would be dumb for a team to make that kind of investment on faith.

I think it will be tough enough to find a team willing to pay him anything close to what he thinks he is worth (which is probably well over TWICE what Tate/MJD just got per year), let alone find one willing to do it without meeting with him.

let alone find one willing to do it without meeting with him.
Why do you keep saying this? He isn't refusing to meet with teams. He isn't event refusing to try out for teams. He's just not "meeting with teams", which has a specific definition with the league and requires public notification. That's a pretty important distinction.

That's not the way I read i the following:

"In fact, there’s a chance Johnson will sign a new contract without even taking a visit. He can, in theory, be interviewed by phone, without the team having to report it. Plus, after six years in the league, plenty of guys know him, either from playing with him or coaching him. It’s possible he’ll be signed without any direct communication with him."

Also, according to other reports, he IS refusing to try out for teams. So I don't think the distinctions you mention are really at the crux of the issue. His camp apparently just feels that his body of work speaks for itself, which is something I don't think will fly.

I think the snippet that you are getting hung up on, is just the author "talking it out".

In fact, there’s a chance Johnson will sign a new contract without even taking a visit. He can, in theory, be interviewed by phone, without the team having to report it. I don't read that as Johnson is refusing to visit teams. I think the author is saying it's possible he could be signed without a team requesting him to come for a vistit - which is unlikely of course.

Also, according to other reports, he IS refusing to try out for teams.
until I read otherwise, I am going to assume this is a manufactured story by PFT.

There's no evidence I am aware of that he was asked to tryout, and said no.

We haven't read the word 'tryout' regarding any other free agent (except for a bizarre MJD argument in the Steelers forum). why is this suddenly an issue with CJ?

He's such a team player, gutted his way through another fantastic season while supporting his O-line and never throwing them under the bus. He'll probably quit football and go do charity work in 3rd world countries...yet still get picked as an underrated back by half the guys in this thread.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Chris Johnson is visiting the Jets on Tuesday.
One week after getting his walking papers from the Titans, Johnson is making his first visit. Per the New York Daily News, the Jets are "one of three teams" that would like to sign Johnson. We don't know the identity of the other two. Teaming Johnson up with Chris Ivory and forming somewhat of a thunder and lightning duo wouldn't be such a bad idea. Keeping Johnson fresh could allow him to theoretically hit more "home runs," providing he puts in the effort.

I like CJ to the Jets as a Jets fan. It gives a nice 1-2 punch at RB, but more importantly, it means the team does not have to burn a pick on a RB. They already will go WR in Round 1 or 2. They also have a need at TE, so theoretically, they could go WR/TE or TE/WR in Rounds 1-2 and focus elsewhere the remainder of the draft.

Without CJ, they are going to need to spend a pick on a RB, which likely would mean they'd skip on either the WR or TE.

Jets need play makers....even CJ who lost a step would give them a HR threat. - as long as its not big money its a no brainer.

The Jets need a playmaker in the worst way. A healthy CJ is a viable playmaker and he can really help add a homerun threat to the Jets. Coupled with Michael Vick who is always a threat to run, CJ can find himself a lot of room to operate.

CJ's best season came with another QB who was always a threat to run.......Vince Young.

Jets are pretty much the only team that makes sense at this point -- and he'll have a better line to run behind there. IMO NY would be a nice value bump for him.

Chris Johnson says Jets visit went well but no decision yetPosted by Curtis Crabtree on April 15, 2014, 11:20 PM EDT

Free agent running back Chris Johnson visited with the New York Jets on Tuesday. It was his first visit since being released by the Tennessee Titans earlier this month.

After visiting with the Jets, Johnson decided to take in Tuesday night’s game between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. While at the game, he spoke with multiple reporters regarding his visit.

Per Josina Anderson of ESPN, Johnson said “I had a great visit with the Jets. I’m just taking it one day at a time.”

Johnson reiterated those thoughts to Peter Botte of the New York Daily News but added he’s “not ready to make my decision.

Johnson had a down year in 2013 for Tennessee but still posted his sixth straight 1,000-yard season. However, the 3.9 yards per carry were the lowest mark of his career.

The Jets ranked sixth in the league in rushing last season with Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory as the primary options out of the backfield. Johnson would likely work in as part of a rotation alongside Powell and Ivory should he elect to sign with the Jets. But, Johnson is also a home run threat whose speed could be a real addition to the lineup.

For now, Johnson isn’t ready to make a decision as he’s possibly holding out for a better offer from the Jets or another team. However, if he doesn’t make a decision soon, teams may elect to wait until after the draft to re-evaluate their needs and Johnson may have to wait to find a new home.

Translating....I got screwed by the titans being released late and the jets lowballed me with a 4 million per year offer. I have no idea what to do.

Where's the line to get screwed?

Like I said before, the Titans have given him about 30M over the last three years, and will give him another 4M as a going away present. Jamaal Charles has made about 14M in that span. McCoy has made less than 10M. Lynch about 17M. Rice about 12M. Forte about 15M. If that's getting the shaft, sign me up.

Somewhere around $4M/year is the new reality for an aging back with question marks. He is free to sign with any team in the league, some of which still have real needs at RB, and "surprisingly", none of them are lining up to pay CJ what he thinks he is worth. Sure, if he had gotten to market a little earlier, he MIGHT have gotten a LITTLE more, but not a lot. Was Cleveland going to give him $10M/year before they signed Tate? Miami before Moreno? SD before Brown? NOPE, not even close. The best fit for him is still out there.

The bottom line problem is that Johnson has/had unrealistic expectations to begin with. $10M/year is simply not the going rate for great backs let alone aging, good backs. If he had run for 5 YPC and 2k yards, sure, then lets talk premiums (but prob still not what he is looking for), but that's not what happened.

As for what he should do now, it's not that hard. Take what you can get, just like every other FA RB has done so far this year, and enjoy the $4M walking away money none of the rest of them enjoyed.
