Why do we keep putting up with the South? (1 Viewer)

Using a Yahoo article to support your side is usually a bad move. Another point for the South.
Failing to see it's a CNBC article republished on Yahoo: 2 point penatly for the south.
Not even clicking on a link to a slideshow about the 10 worst places to live: +3 for the South.
Not having to live in the south: priceless.

There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's MasterCard
Is this some sort of a racist reference.

It would help a lot if we could separate the South into the Bible Belt and the Meth Belt, but only after yielding to the West what belongs to the West.

ETA: Separate the West ino Near West and Far West.

Then, draw lines of distinction in the North between Doosches and Ditkas.

ETA: North is required to contribute to the Meth Belt

And then spin off the mid-Atlantic into sort of a Switzerland role.

ETA: Assign Switzerland status to Maine, in similar fasion to the way the Peninsula belongs to Michigan.

Allow Texas to secede.

And last but not least.

To address the OP's original question, someone has to give folks in the north advice on raccoons in their garbage cans.

not too long ago, Team South was claiming everything from Illinois to Pennsylvania. Now they don't even want Oklahoma? :lmao:
It's not the ####### South
Peens seems to identify very strongly with our Southern friends and he lives there now, so I think the matter is settled. Nobody cares about the West in this discussion.
texas fought with the confederacy during the war. They are south. In Oklahoma even the Indian tribes owned black slaves = SOUTH

Have you ever been to either? Have you even left Michigan other than go to Cedar Point?

He got transfered there when he worked for Waffle House, then stayed because it was cheap. Not sure that counts.

You and MAC 32 should start some sort of comedy hour that lasts four minutes.

I'm less concerned with who fought with who 150 years ago than I am with a similar culture.

East TX, I'd be happy to say is southern but Texas as a whole is a Western as it gets. Oklahoma is like Texas Jr., so therefore they are western as well.

I can't believe there are people in this world that consider Oklahoma part of the south. 30 years of living in the south (before I got the hell outta there) and I never even knew. I guess there are crazy people everywhere.

Why do we keep putting up with the south not knowing how to define the south?
Were there not Northerners earlier trying to claim Los Angeles as a great Northern city?
Really? :oldunsure:

I'm late to this thread, will have to read it tomorrow. lol
It's 99% shtick until everyone started arguing over Oklahoma being "south" or not....context is your friend in this thread for sure. All that said, the land grabs didn't change today and somehow the north continued to be distracted by innocent bystanders and did little to get their land back. That's a net positive for the south given Henry Ford was actually working and couldn't keep the south's march north as his primary focus for the day.

I'm willing to compromise. When I think of "the south" I think of this:

The Deep South: various definitions, usually including Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. Occasionally, parts of adjoining states are included (sections of East Texas, the Mississippi embayment areas of Arkansas and Tennessee, and northern and central Florida
I would add anything south of Richmond in Virginia and most of North Carolina being the south. Delaware is not the south at all, Maryland has a few southern counties that play south even now but this state isn't like Northern Florida or Tupelo. Texas and Oklahoma have southern themes but I would consider both "western" or the southwest. Cowboy boots, cattle, arid conditions, little green, no rebel flags, even the BBQ is different. San Antonio is more Los Angeles than it is Atlanta, Abilene is something out of a John Wayne western.

Nobody cares I'm sure but Oklahoma is a difficult state to categorize in these discussions. SE Oklahoma (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Dixie_(Oklahoma) definitely resembles THE South moreso than any other region. Lots of people from that area speak with Southern accents whereas people from the rest of the state do not. The Cross Timbers is a transition area geographically that sort of divides the state. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_Timbers Everything west of that is definitely not "Southern", more southwestern or Great Plains depending on where you're at.

It's my opinion that any state entirely west of the Mississippi should not be considered either North nor South - that's West, an entirely different region.
I can understand why some people are saying Texas isn't part of the South. In certain ways, it differs from the Eastern parts of The South. (For the record, The South is not relinquishing Texas in this current war.) But, anyone who would even suggest that Arkansas and most of Louisiana are not The South, simply because they are West of the Mighty Mississipp', have never been to Arkansas or Louisiana.

Looks like the North stopped fighting.
I think they got bored of the south's weak argument.
Every once in awhile some Sons of Jefferson Davis Hogg put down their whittlin and scrub board playin and all get worked up about the North. They hoot and holler about how the South is better, how they'd be better off without the North and how much the North sucks. Then they declare the South to be something or other, they get tired and then retire back to their porches and moonshine jug blowing. Yes....they have better spices and yes...their women are generally better looking until they get to be about 22 and discover the joys of the tub of Miracle Whip.....but other than that, they are the regional Charlie Brown; eternally doomed to have the football pulled away everytime they think they're going to kick it.
I think you're misrepresenting who started this thread. Also, a semicolon is used when there's a whole sentence in the next clause.
I didn't realize Smoo moved South?
Are you asking me or telling me?

If you're going to claim an education and intelligence advantage over a whole group of people, you should probably make sure you don't look like a moron while you do it. However, I think that fits with the North's M.O.; you don't have more education or intelligence, you have more hubris and unearned airs of superiority. You also may have an unopened leather bound coffee table version of Strunk & White's Elements Of Style - just for show.
When one starts to correct internet grammar, they've pretty much lost the fight. I'll take that as a white flag from you.

When it's just "one" the proper pronoun is "he" or "she."And when one claims that his opponent has no education, he had better understand basic English.

Maybe you should go back to calling me Cletus and then ignoring my replies until you take a high school English course or two. It's okay. I know it's hard to fit in learning your home language between taking pictures of your food and trying to fit into your skinny jeans.

I've grown up in the Deep South my entire life. Currently live in Nashville. Up until about 4 years ago, I was completely done with the south and was ready to move. Wanting to experience something different, etc.

Then I took a job in which I had to travel all over the country for a year and a half. I went everywhere from the West to the North to Alaska.

What I learned is that this country, while diverse in it's scenery, is really becoming homogenized. "Hey look here's the part of town where we stuff all the fast food restaurants". "Here's the part of town with all the chain fancy restaurants, the mall and the movie theater". "Over here we have the river with all the new trendy shops and eateries".

It's all the same. North, south, east, west, the US has become a homogenized country. In reality, I've found, the biggest difference is big city / country. You'll find gun-toting rednecks in Pennsylvania, Oregon, Texas and Mississippi.

Now I don't care much about moving, because unless I go to another country, Alaska or Hawaii, it's the same stuff, everywhere.
