I think continuity had value. They’re in a SB window. Sutton could have been a fall-back plan. I’m sure they’re much happier locking up their current WR1 than having Sutton as a bandaid. It’s kind of wild, they would have been ok with taking Sutton who I think is on an expiring deal but also just decided to pay top money for Aiyuk. Do the 49ers know what they want?
Thank God. This has been one of the most painful and infuriating threads I've ever seen on this board in 25 years.
Really? There was tons of speculation as everyone tried to predict what he'd do.
Some people had firm opinions. But I missed anything "painful" and certainly missed anything "infuriating".
We never want threads to be those things.
I do get that the situation dragged out. And there was more speculation just because it went on so long.
But speculating about football is mostly what we do on this forum. I don't think people are going to stop posting their opinions on the topic or sharing opinions / predictions they're hearing.
Or are you saying something different?
For the topic though, yes, I'm glad to have some clarity.
You'd be pressed to find a longer thread with less information than this one.
I dunno - I learned a ton about the salary cap, contracts, and other shark tank members. You'd be pressed to find a longer thread with less information than this one.
Obviously not alone with my sentiment.....
As an owner looking for news, seeing this continually at the top of the thread with no new news was aggravating. I was using hyperbole, I'll try to avoid that in the future.

Thanks. That is interesting to me though. I've always thought folks didn't use the forum much for finding news. There are so many faster ways people get news these days.
I feel like most people use the forum to talk about what's happening. And mostly, to speculate on what they think will happen. More of a discussion and less of a news reporting thing.
But I also could very well be misunderstanding how people use the forum.
PFF grades on individual wins. No doubt in my mind Aiyuk was able to win and win often. I think a lot of that success and his wins are based on the players around him though. When you game plan for the 49ers who do you stop 1st, 2nd, 3rd? I don’t think Aiyuk is the answer to any of those.Only Tyreek had a higher PFF grade than Aiyuk last year. It’s fine to not be a fan, but the numbers actually do point to him being elite. He also has fantastic hands-only two drops last season. If that's the case then SF handled this very poorly. These other players are creating for Aiyuk, and he was smart to cash in after his breakout season. If DeeBo/Kittle/McCaffrey aren't there he's getting locked down by #1 corners with safety help every week. He's a mirage. The 49ers botched this. They should have paid Trent Williams and let this guy rot on his couch. There are impact WRs coming out every year AND they just drafted a WR in the first round.Countdown to Deebo holdout next year…
Think Deebo will get moved in the offseason.
In addition, he’s also an outstanding run-blocker, which we all know is paramount in this offense.
Even with all of the other talent on this offense, it would be foolish in my opinion to assume this offense would not have skipped a beat without him. It seems the Niners agree.

Hey Fair point here, so no harm done but haha so glad its over and we can talk more about stats/projections, how it help the Niners to keep him, how it affects Trent Williams getting a deal done, the salary cap moving forward yadda yadda yadda we are finally moving forward.I dunno - I learned a ton about the salary cap, contracts, and other shark tank members. You'd be pressed to find a longer thread with less information than this one.

I think what’s being discounted here is how much of an impact he has on the success of this offense.PFF grades on individual wins. No doubt in my mind Aiyuk was able to win and win often. Would he have 1,300+ yards with Pitt or NE? I doubt it.
He’s not the guy you pay. Just my opinion. I wouldn’t pay Purdy top 10 money either.
I think Aiyuk is a premium player.Premiere money to non-premiere players backfires pretty much every time.
Paying this guy premiere money before Trent Williams is idiotic.
Agreed. Russ will be looking out of his earhole for 2-4 games, and Fields might have more escapability, but likely not enough volume to support Pickens & Aiyuk, who’d both vulture each others numbers to the point that they’d both be WR2-3s for FF. Plus the Steelers still want to run run run run run.Pitt, I’m not sure. I’d take the under there. Pitt would’ve been a nightmare scenario for fantasy owners in my opinion.
Just saw on NFL live that ESPN has a metric for WRs using next gen data called "Open Score", which tracks how open a WR gets on a route by route basis, whether or not the ball is thrown their way. He’s the only true X-WR that they have that can consistently get open and make plays downfield. He averaged 17.9 yards per reception last season-another elite statistic.
I look at this often to feed my confirmation bias that Diontae Johnson could explode with the decent QB play.Just saw on NFL live that ESPN has a metric for WRs using next gen data called "Open Score", which tracks how open a WR gets on a route by route basis, whether or not the ball is thrown their way. He’s the only true X-WR that they have that can consistently get open and make plays downfield. Aiyuk ranked 8th in the league last season. By comparison, Deebo ranked 128th.
Crazy difference.
Edit: here's a link to the rankings. Aiyuk is #1 overall when you avg his open, catch, and YAC scores (he's #1 in the catch category, and Deebo is #1 in the YAC category)

Yeah - he's clearly playing for a contract this year. He came into came in incredible shape.and based on everything I hear and see he's come into camp sort of knowing how big this year is for him.
I push back on that because he was a legitmate WR in 2021 and was piling up huge numbers before, out of necessity, they switched his role. He's different though for sure and I'm not sure how it's going to look for him without Kyle drawing stuff up.He's also a "wideback" (I still hate that term) and more of a YAC guy than a WR target
I think for FF purposes “still very valuable” is in the likely range of outcomes.I push back on that because he was a legitmate WR in 2021 and was piling up huge numbers before, out of necessity, they switched his role. He's different though for sure and I'm not sure how it's going to look for him without Kyle drawing stuff up.He's also a "wideback" (I still hate that term) and more of a YAC guy than a WR target

Is roster/game bonus multiple by number of games he plays in or on the 53 man roster OR is it the total available and would be divided by the number of game
They are probably fine but Trent Williams is probably what is could really screw them over. Say they give him 2-3 more years because he’s demanding it and then he retires after this year, that gtd money has to come off the books right away. But they also need him.SF will be in salary cap hell next year and the foreseeable future, so they have to do whatever it takes to win it all this year. That meant paying Aiyuk and also doing whatever it takes to get Trent Williams back this year. In all likelihood, Superbowl window with this current core group closes after this year due to salary cap constraints. And I think SF realistically knows that.
This below article explains their salary cap situation even before they signed Aiyuk and before they pay Brock next year. They'll have to release or trade some really good players in the coming years just to be cap compliant. This year is likely their last good chance at winning a Superbowl for the foreseeable future, and SF realistically knows they need Trent Wiliiams to do it, so, yes, Trent has a ton of leverage. If their realistic Superbowl window wasn't about to close, I think they would have been very open to trading Aiyuk and Trent. Superbowl or bust. They are probably fine but Trent Williams is probably what is could really screw them over. I think if Trent’s demands were simple such as guaranteeing this year opposed to him being week to week (he can be cut at any time), it would’ve already been done. This one seems like there may not be a easy resolution. He just turned 36 years old and he has all the leverage.
So really I am changing my stance, they are probably not ok because a lot of this has to do with TW. He has control over a lot of outcomes at this point.

No offense to you, but most guys that report on the salary cap really don’t have a clue how it works. The Niners have almost $40M in cap space for this year. If they decide not to use it, it will roll over into next year. That would mean they are $10M under the cap next year, not $30M over. Teams have any number of ways to manipulate the salary cap . . . converting salary money into bonus money (CLE just did this with Watson), adding dummy years to contracts (like SF did with Aiyuk), extending contracts with insane last year salaries that players will never see, etc. The cap keeps going up, so teams will find ways to push the cap hits into the future. Eventually when teams hit a phase where their guys get old and they don’t win as much, they will have a reset year and eat a ton of dead money. But teams can wait on that for quite awhile. This below article explains their salary cap situation even before they signed Aiyuk and before they pay Brock next year. The San Francisco 49ers have officially signed Brandon Aiyuk to a contract extension, not only making him one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL...www.49erswebzone.com
So he will be a 49er through 2026.
Is roster/game bonus multiple by number of games he plays in or on the 53 man roster OR is it the total available and would be divided by the number of game to get a per game amount?
I understand that unspent money rolls over to next year. So, for instance, the Deshaun Watson restructuring has no long term bearing as long as the Browns don't spend all the saved money in the near future. And I understand teams often structure/restructure contracts to push the money into future years. But with all the big contracts SF has committed to, the next one probably being Trent Willams who deservedly wants to be the highest paid left tackle, and then Brock after that, the 49ers will have some really tough roster decisions in the coming years.

49ers enter a new circle of ‘salary cap hell’ with latest contract extension
The 49ers signed Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million deal on Thursdaywww.turfshowtimes.com
No hate on OBJ. Just reality he is older. And his rating last year might have something to do with the team he is on. If you had to cover Hill, Waddell, Mostert and Achane you might let your weakest DB/LB take on an aging OBJ. Just an opinion.OBJ just looks washed. I’ve not been a fan for a very long time. Maybe it’s just haterade, but he looks like a shell of his former self.Don’t look now but they rated Odell Beckham 27th overall.![]()
SF opted to add 2 dummy years to Aiyuk’s contract. The first dummy year they are scheduled to take a $9.5M cap hit and a roughly $5M cap it the second dummy year. The benefit is it reduces the cap hit both this year and across the rest of the active years of the contract I haven’t seen this process called an option proration before, but the way the numbers are mapped out on Spotrac, it just looks like a fancier way to say they added dummy years.@Anarchy99 Can you explain this to me?What is an option proration?Details emerge: Brandon Aiyuks New deal creates 2024 cap space for 49ers
