WR Marvin Mims, DEN (2 Viewers)

Yeah, you'll see it expand, but when Matt Harmon did his Reception Perception in-season check-in with Mims, it wasn't pretty. He wasn't ready to run professional routes yet, said Harmon. His charting was one of the worst of the rookie receivers getting any playing time.

We'll see how long Payton sticks with a guy that was the first pick of his tenure, IIRC.

What’s his value with Jeudy trade?
Late 2nd? Didn't really do anything last year so still rather unknown. Quite a few rookie WRs I like better.
I'd probably even say round 3. Mims showed very little as a rookie, QB is a major question, its highly unlikely they don't add multiple WR (Michael Thomas makes sense, plus a rookie) and its possible Payton doesn't have it without Brees.

Denverbroncos.com - Mims has earned plenty of hardware following his rookie season, as he was named a Pro Football Writers of America All-AFC and All-Rookie selection, a second-team AP All-Pro and a Pro Bowler.

I think with Jeudy out of the picture and assuming some level of competent QB play - Mims could be in that WR2-WR3 range. I could be wrong but he passes the eye test for me. Has a knack for getting open for the deep ball, kind of a long strider, not very explosive but solid. Good hands.

What’s his value with Jeudy trade?
I don't know well enough to put a number on it, but I definitely like him a lot more today than yesterday. If I had to approximate him with a 2024 pick right now, gun to my head ... 2.04?

In 1 QB FFPC, we have roster cutdown at the end of March. Mims was a borderline cut for me. About 10 days ago, I got a larger offer that included Mims from my side. I rejected and countered with Mims for 2.03. He rejected. Other guy sent the same offer today, his 2.03 for Mims, and I accepted.

You did good trading him while the hype is still there. You are going to get someone like Trey Benson, Drake Maye, or Roman Wilson with that 2.03. All are better prospects than Mims.

One clear takeaway from OTAs is the offense is far further along than it was at this point last year. Mims among players whose comfort in the system is discernible.

“The first half of these OTAs has gone really good,” Payton said. “I mean really good. I told them that.”

Big changes — to his role and to NFL rules — could mean the ball is in Marvin Mims Jr.’s hands a lot more during his second season with the Broncos.

And he’s ready for it.

“Things are going a lot smoother for me.”

“Mims is poised to make a big impact as a returner again in 2024, but his contributions won’t end there. Mims averaged 17.1 yards per reception last fall, but he was used sporadically on offense. After trading Jerry Jeudy to the Browns this spring, the Broncos will have more snaps (and targets) available for Mims on offense this fall.”

Really like this kid .. He reminds me of Mike Wallace. He makes great contested catches and is electric in the open field .. QB play is an obvious concern, but if he can develop some sort of chemistry with one of the QB’s then look out.

I ended up with Mims in the 3rd or 4th round of last year's rookie draft - owned Jeudy, took him anyway.

Jeudy getting traded and Mims elevated to a starter is best case scenario for my dynasty team. I think Sean Payton will scheme Mims in nicely and a lot of vacated targets. Upthread people were saying Mims is probably worth a 3rd round pick in this year's rookie draft. I think I would give up a 3rd for Mims.

Does not look good at all for Mims

Why?

He ran only 1 route with Nix. Even Reynolds ran 7. Sutton 11 and Patrick 9. He seems to be pretty low in the pecking order for now.
Mims caught a TD from Nix last week. Patrick will be 31 and can't stay healthy, ACL & Achilles in consecutive seasons. Reynolds is a #3. Mims has upside.
He did but lil Jordan Humphries was getting more snaps with Nix than him. Mims played deep into the 2nd half with a bunch of guys who likely won’t make the team. It’s not crystal clear but the signs aren’t great.

Yeah he does, but when a 29 year old vet like Reynolds is getting all those early snaps instead of the young WR that doesn't have much playing time....not a good sign.

"...opening up a larger role for Marvin Mims, the second-round pick last season who impressed early as a rookie, then faded into the background of the offense. Though he caught a touchdown pass from Nix during the preseason opener, it wasn’t a particularly flashy camp from Mims. His deep-ball connection with Nix appears to be a work in progress. He played only 28 offensive snaps in the preseason and was targeted four times, catching two passes for 17 yards. The Broncos will no doubt have wrinkles in the offense that feature Mims — he was used consistently on jet-sweep plays last season"

The Coachspeak Index
#Broncos HC Sean Payton on Marvin Mims playing just 12 offensive snaps:

“It’s part of the challenges when we have multiple receiver groups. Obviously, we anticipate him getting more than just 12… I think you’ll see his pitch count, week to week — depending on the team we’re playing — go up.”

Payton has a 50% reliability rating on usage/workload coachspeak, and a CVS receipt-length history of promising to get Mims more involved in the offense

The Coachspeak Index
Marvin Mims played 9 offensive snaps yesterday (15%)

he played fewer snaps than Courtland Sutton, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Josh Reynolds, and Troy Franklin

(Devaughn Vele sat with an injury)

So what value do we put on this guy in dynasty?

I am way deep at WR in several leagues and added this dude mid season. He has improved every week and seems to have a connection with Nix. On my teams he is WR 5 or 6 and I want to try and get sell him for upgrades elsewhere,

Marvin Mims is good. I don't know why it took Denver this long to figure it out.

Zac Stevens
Marvin Mims Jr is SO good at finding the end zone in tight quarters

I’m a really really big fan of Marvin Mims’ new role in this offense. They need some more pieces on offense to ween defenses off the predictability of it but he could be in for a big season next year in these looks.

I give so much credit to this offensive coaching staff. They saw a young player struggling to carve out his role in the receiver room and crafted a role that suits him and boosts the offense.

It's hard to know what to make of today with KC sitting starters. I did love the way they were using him, though. Several quick throws/screens. He was able to use his speed to make plays.

Last week vs Cincy, he was beating them deep. He had 1 touchdown where he got behind the defense and another where he won a jump ball over 2 defenders.

I'd like to see his role today extend into the playoffs. If they keep trying to get the ball in his hands out in space, I'll feel way better about him next year.

What are everyone's thoughts on Mims? What do you think drafting Bryant means for him, if anything?

I think he's a better player than his production indicates, but for fantasy purposes is a boom-bust WR4. I'd buy at his current value because I think both he and Nix are improving together and there is a chance he could take the next step. The last 1/3 of the season Mims was solid.

I can see him falling into that Sean Payton deep threat role. Which has some historic production, but inconsistent.
