TE Zach Ertz, WAS (2 Viewers)

Dallas Goedert's PFF Grade in 2019 - 82.7 (6th among TEs)

Zach Ertz's PFF grade in 2019 - 72.7 (15th among TEs)

Philly is smarter than this. It's obvious what they should be doing in this situation.

Goedert is their future, not Ertz.  Don't give the farm to Ertz at this point in his career.

You want to pay a 30 year old TE for what he did 2 years ago? Paying for past performance is never a good idea. Last year Ertz wasn't the best TE on his own team. The year before he was better but Goedert was a rookie that year and Ertz was 2 years younger.
Correct and he has 2 years left on his current deal. No need to pay or even negotiate with him at this time.

Why in the world would he think he deserves another contract now?   He's not worth more than the 7M they will pay him this year and next.  If anything the Eagles should try and move on from him by trading him now.  They have a stud TE waiting to be the guy.

Hasn’t Ertz led the team in targets the last few years?  He will do it again this year.

I understand his frustration with being treated as the #1 receiver but not being paid like it, but he has no leverage here

Not this year but do you see a hold out next year? Ertz already going to the media which is not a distraction the Eagles want right now.
It's possible for sure but how much leverage would he have if Goedert plays well? Maybe he gets his deal reworked and more bonus money but if not he's traded.

The Kelce and Kittle deals are more than likely what made this happen and he's up there in age.  That and we just gave a guy extra money just to switch positions on the OL

Zach Ertz caught 3-of-7 targets for 18 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' Week 1 loss to Washington.

Ertz was out-targeted by fellow TE Dallas Goedert, who saw nine targets. He saved his fantasy day with the short first quarter touchdown catch, and continues to be a plugged-in fantasy play next week against the Rams.

Zach Ertz caught 5-of-7 targets for 42 yards in the Eagles' Week 2 loss to the Rams.

Ertz was once again out-targeted by Dallas Goedert, but this time he outproduced his younger teammate. Even with better protection today, Carson Wentz wasn't finding the cushions in the defense. It's been two terrible games for the Eagles' offense. Hopefully the Bengals serve as a Week 3 tonic. Ertz maintains top-five TE1 benefit of the doubt for the time being.

Zach Ertz caught 7-of-10 targets for 70 yards in the Eagles' Week 3 tie with the Bengals.

Ertz entered the Week with an 8/60/1 line through two weeks. All of those marks were behind fellow Eagles TE Dallas Goedert, who suffered an ankle injury that sidelined him for more than a half of the game. His absence, and the injury to DeSean Jackson (hamstring), thrust Ertz back into the role of No. 1 target in Philly. He should continue to hold that role going forward if Goedert is out and is a TE1 whether or not Godert is able to play versus the 49ers next week.

Zach Ertz caught 4-of-5 targets for 9 yards in the Eagles' Week 4 win over the 49ers.

Ertz finished behind Greg Ward in targets for the second straight week. His biggest problem this year has been efficiency. Ertz is averaging 4.8 yards per target through four weeks. Part of that is on Carson Wentz, who has played poorly to start the year. Some of Ertz's minuscule fantasy production has to be contributed to his age. He'll be 30 years old next week and his yards per target dropped in each of the past three seasons. The Eagles get a difficult matchup versus Pittsburgh next week. Ertz projects as a low-end TE1 and it's possible that we've simply seen the best of him at this point.

Zach Ertz caught 1-of-6 targets for six yards in the Eagles' Week 5 loss to the Steelers.

Ertz has been inefficient for most of 2020 but the loss of Dallas Goedert had the potential to funnel double-digit targets to him on a weekly basis. This hasn't been close to the reality of the situation. Ertz hasn't led the Eagles in targets once through five weeks an is averaging 5.8 yards per target on the year. He can be benched for other low-end TE1 options until the targets start coming his way again.

Hes cooked. We saw shades of serious decline last season. This year hes fallen off a cliff. He doesnt get open/and isnt fighting through contact to make catches. Hes basically a giant marshmellow wide reciever at this point because he sure as hell cant block. Hes giving the Eagles nothing right now and is pouting like a spoiled brat. Get what you can for him before Goedert/Reagor/Alshon/DJax come back because it's only gonna get worse.

All true and crazy how old and used up to me he looks and still not even 30 just yet, he looks like I thought he'd look as more at his age 33-34 type season.

Eagles Overreactions: Is Zach Ertz Done Being an Elite Tight End in the NFL?

Excerpt:

2. Zach Ertz isn't a Top 5 tight end anymore

Overreaction: No

Here are seven tight ends I'd absolutely take over Zach Ertz right now:

George Kittle

Travis Kelce

Darren Waller

Mark Andrews

Hunter Henry

Hayden Hurst

Dallas Goedert

I'd also think about taking Noah Fant and Mike Gesicki.

Ertz simply hasn't looked like a useful pass-catching tight end this season. He's never been an athletic specimen, but throughout his career he's been a route-running savant who is always in the right spot when his quarterback needs him. Instead, this year Ertz and Carson Wentz have failed to get on the page numerous times, including more than once on Sunday. This week the disconnect - and Ertz's inability to get to the right spot on time - resulted in an interception. He's not doing the things that made him a reliable option.

He's also looked a step slower on most routes this season, something reinforced by this discouraging trend:

Zach Ertz will turn 30 next month. His yards after catch per reception, by season:

2015: 4.27
2016: 3.58
2017: 3.45
2018: 3.22
2019: 3.11
2020: 2.21 #AgeModel

— Adam Levitan (@adamlevitan) October 7, 2020

Adding a loss of athleticism to a loss of fundamentals, and you're looking at a serious problem.

Ertz, who turns 30 next month, now has 20 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown through five weeks, including just five catches for 15 yards in the last two weeks combined. Those numbers would be even lower if Dallas Geodert hadn't suffered an injury.

Goedert is the future of the tight end position for the Eagles, and unless Ertz shows us something soon, I wouldn't hesitate to hit fast-forward on that plan as soon as next year.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz (foot) was ruled out of the team's Week 6 game against the Ravens.

Ertz was helped off the field and into the locker room. He turned ten targets into four catches and 33 yards against Baltimore. Richard Rodgers would figure to get more playing time if Ertz is out next week.

Zach Ertz caught 4-of-10 targets for 33 yards in the Eagles' Week 6 loss to the Ravens.

Ertz's ten targets were tied for the team lead, so he has that going for him, which is nice. Ertz, hobbled for much of Sunday's contest, was helped off the field and into the locker room. The Eagles play the Giants on Thursday, giving Ertz limited time to get right. It would be a surprise if he's able to practice at all before Thursday's game.

Have to wonder if his starting job won't be lost for good in that time.
With the dearth of pass catching options, I imagine both he and Goedert will remain on the field for the most part. I could see the targets, however, increasingly shift towards Goedert.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Zach Ertz (ankle) is expected to miss "3-4 weeks."

Ertz will presumably be moved to injured reserve in the coming days with a high-ankle sprain. The Eagles will also be short Miles Sanders (knee) for 1-2 weeks but are expected to get back both DeSean Jackson (hamstring) and Dallas Goedert (ankle) Thursday night. Ertz, who had totaled 24/178/1 and 3.9 yards per target through six games, can be universally dropped across re-draft leagues.

BET Slant:

According to PointsBet Sportsbook, in the Thursday night matchup between the Eagles and Giants, the line was Philly -6 and has moved to -3.5.

Glad to see Goedert is eligible to come off the injured list Thursday.  Not sure if he will however.

So what are my fellow Ertz owners doing with this guy? Cutting him loose?

No doubt he's been a massive bust and an anchor weighing down weekly lineups. The "WRs need to get healthy" narrative was already looking weaker once Fulgham started blowing up and Ertz was still was doing nothing. 3-4 weeks is a long time to wait on the potential chance that he turns his season around when he gets back. Then again, TE is laughably barren this year.

Has anyone here considered cutting him straight up for Goedert? Despite multiple fantasy outlets erroneously reporting Goedert's return this week, it seems possible the Iggles hold him out to week 10 (week 9 bye). This might coincide with Ertz's return, which would not be ideal. If Goedert could return earlier (say week 8 ) it's possible he could just take this job from Ertz the way he has played this season. And if these guys do happen return around the same time, would you prefer Goedert regardless at this point?

This depends on so much.  Your record, your bench size, your roster, etc.

If you own Ertz you probably should already have rostered Goedert, but yes you go get him asap.  As for dropping Ertz, again it depends on the above.

Not to get too AC Forum here but... 7 bench spots, no IR slots, in striking distance of playoff spot.

The point here being Goedert's been out for a bit. If you're now rostering Ertz AND Goedert, both of who are not playing, you need to roster a 3rd TE. That is a lot of bench capital to invest in a play 1 TE league.

Given that Goedert was showing better in the small sample size of games this season, and both were getting similar targets, it could be possible Goedert is the better play going forward regardless.

Yes I believe Goedert will outperform Ertz in fantasy rest of season.  So if you absolutely need to drop one, I guess there's a point to be made to drop Ertz.  I think you can hang on to both and stream for a couple weeks though.  7 bench spots is enough to have 2 TE's on the bench.  If you're forced to pick one, I pick Goedert for sure.

Thanks for the input. I currently have Fant as well, who I have high hopes for now that he looks like he's coming back. I was thinking Fant and Goedert both have nice upside.

But totally agree on your read that the contract situation is big factor here. The season definitely got off on the wrong foot with the Ertz and Howie dust up. Best thing for all parties involved would have been a trade before the deadline. The timing could ultimately be the worst thing about this injury.

Was dropped in my 12 team PPR league last night. Owner has no Goedert but had picked up Tonyan.

I’m fortunate that I have Ertz in a large bench league, so I’m going to hold if I can. He’s most likely next man up to get cut though. The unfortunate side of a large bench is there is absolutely nothing on waivers. I ended up trading for Hockenson a few days ago.

Looks like Ertz is now projected to be out 4-6 weeks per an update on RW. And he is now placed on IR.

Makes it that much harder to justify holding. This also means that Goedert will get at least a few games by himself to show out and possibly take the lead job. He could be coming back week 12 or 13 and need to knock the rust off if you would consider rolling him out for the fantasy playoffs. Seems dicey.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler spoke with "multiple executives who got indications" the Eagles were open to trading Zach Ertz before he landed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Ertz can still be traded — IRed players were now allowed to be dealt until 2018 — but the fact that he was struggling before going down and will miss the next three games probably means whatever trade value the Eagles could get for their seam stretcher wouldn't be worth it. That's especially true since Dallas Goedert (ankle) is not near a return. Per Fowler, there is "a bit of bitterness there" between Ertz and the Eagles after the sides couldn't agree to an extension in the preseason. Signs are pointing toward this being Ertz's final year in Philly.

The money is too much and there's a viable replacement already here taking over his reps. Thanks for the Super Bowl Zach but yes it's time to move on after this year. Probably will do well with a fresh start anyway.

Deamon said:
small bench leagues so stop being that guy.
My main league only has 4 bench spots, and the guy who drafted him still has him.  I'm not being anything but realistic from where I'm sitting.
